And about 110 years later, the Royal Navy would use the same trick again with the infamous "Q-Ships" in the first and second world wars. Dressing up tramp-steamers as easy U-Boat targets, complete with "panicking" seamen lowering life rafts. And yet when the enemy got within a range at which guns could NOT miss, many would be revealed! Unfurled from wooden crates and crewed by experienced gunners. Ambushes are fearsome things!

I hate to pick nits, but although phasmids are colloquially known as "stick insects," no-one (including Russell Crowe's character in this scene) would refer to such a thing as a "stick." He would have said: "Let me guess -- a twig." These insects look like twigs; a stick is a VERY different thing.

Yes indeed - only it turned out later that the "doctor" of the other ship (being in reality the French captain) had used the same trick. ;.) But the true point of this scene here is that the captain is ready to learn from his crew; he's strict but he is not a bully or a tyrant and he actually takes their suggestions (though the doctor makes his point ina very subtle way here!).

This movie was too much for the GA audience back in the day. I feel like if it had been made a series on Netflix or some other streaming service today it would have been a smash hit in the veins of GoT or even a lesser but still great show like Black Sails.

There's even enough material in the form of books about the adventures of the Surprise and her captain that a show format on Netflix or HBO could easily rely on the story that's already laid out.

When I was in the Australian Navy in the 70’s during exercises we camouflaged our destroyer lights to look like a small vessel.. opened front portholes and at night went through the opposition ships undetected, your all sunk boys. nowadays up to date radar and detection equipment would have spotted us on the horizon and probably have sunk us,

Acts inviting the confidence of an adversary to lead him to believe that he is entitled to, or is obliged to accord, protection under the rules of international law applicable in armed conflict, with intent to betray that confidence, shall constitute perfidy. The following acts are examples of perfidy: [...] (c) The feigning of civilian, non-combatant status; [...] They feigned being english civilian wailers. While the colors were flown prior to the first shot fired they did invite the confidence of their adversary and led them to believe they were entitled to protection under the rules of international laws. Arguably the French did another form of perfidy when the english boarded them, feigning injury and or death of the entire crew before springing an ambush. Call it even.

one of the greatest historical fiction ever created. I remember seeing it when I was still a kid really. I had convinced my father and brother to go see it in theater instead of whatever "blockbuster" was out. My dad being a navy man in his youth, I thought would enjoy it (even though I had always looked down on the navy for some odd reason). At the end of the movie I was enchanted with what I had seen, and my brother and father could hardly stay awake. It was one of the first moments when I realized that there was more to life than emulating your father.
