Howard Hill was the archer I always longed to be, I began shooting from the age of 7 along with my Dad teaching me, oh the hunting trips were magic! Im 44yo and only been into archery for a few years. I came from a firearms background, but archery brings something new and special to my NEED to hit a target. My son is 16 and him and i have been learning together. Its a great time! I cant understand why archery(trad) isnt more popular. Here are the advantages as i can see it. 1. My son and I can shoot in areas that would get the police called on us if we were shooting firearms 2. Much less legal issues and socal stigma over flinging arrows. Lets face it, the same neighbors that will hate you for firearm ownership(wrong as that may be) will never say a word about a couple arrows. No 4473 required to buy a bow here in the united states. 3. Extreamly challenging!!! 4 or 5 things need to go right to hit the bulleye with a gun. About 10-12 things need to go right to hit the bullseye with a bow. 4. Its somewhat althetic. Bows require some degree of strength to pull and walking back and forth to the target every 6-10 arrows is more excresize then most americans get. Its kinda sad when i go to my local archery shop and see 100 of the newest compound bows on the wall, and 6-8 trad bows. Its like people just want the easy way out, rather than developing a skill. Sad times were living in, but thats how it is i guess. Howard hill was the archer i aspire to be!

Around 1974-75 I was a hospital orderly as a college student, and Mr. Hill was one of my patients. In fact this may have been during his final illness, as he died in early 1975. Mr. Hill was a gentleman of very high character, and was interested in steering young people down the right path. We struck up some conversations and he told me about his days in Hollywood on the Robin Hood movie. He didn't like it, since he and his wife were very moral, upright persons who felt Hollywood was consumed with immorality and licentiousness. He said that he and his wife went to a party at Errol Flynn's house, and they had to leave when it turned into an orgy, with people openly swapping wives and engaging in all manner of wild behavior that made the Hills feel uncomfortable and out of place. A very fine man.

@panzerd52488 жыл бұрын
+Tamesumstrange I am an Archery Instructor and I teach people how to shoot Compounds and Traditional. With a bow that's properly set up I can have some one hitting bulls at 20 yds within a few hours with a Compound bow, not so with a Longbow or Recurve. Why would you want to shoot at an animal at 60 yds with a bow. You see this is the problem I have with people shooting the Compound bow and trying to make hits at 60 yds. I believe that for the most part taking shots that far is unethical, because most people can't do it. But they watch to many of these Hunting shows that are garbage, and they see other people trying it so they want to do it. Bow hunting is about challenging yourself and trying to get as close to your animal as you can. This is why I gave up the Compound and went Traditional. With today's compounds and all the gadgets to go along with them, bow hunting has become to easy. But that's just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions.

That same year, he won his 196th field archery competition in a row. Hill, though, was not only one of the most decorated archers in the modern era of target shooting, hunting, and flight archery competitions, he was also a celebrated writer and producer. During his career, he produced 23 films about archery for Warner Bros. He also produced 10 different films of his own and was a technical adviser in far more motion pictures, providing his expertise in the field.' ~ Wikipedia

Probably, but it wouldn't pay him what he was making in Hollywood. Either way, I'm not trying to start an argument with you. @RSQuickSave9 жыл бұрын
Itchyback I understand where you fall short of believing these comments but it's not impossible. You can hit a coin in mid air as well as split another arrow on the target. Sometimes a little luck is involved as well. Don't be so rash to judge next time. Thanks :)
@Itchyback9 жыл бұрын
You can hit a coin in mid air when you have a guiding line between coin and the arrow. You might hit a coin in mid air once without a line but you can't repeat it constantly. It's simply because how the arrow flies, it wobbles [quite a lot] rather than have a straight trajectory like bullets. And you can't split a medieval arrow fully from tail to tip simply because it isn't hollow.

When he shoots the apple and prune off the guy's head, the fact that the arrow "ricochets" tells me that it's not the broadhead that we see right before he shoots, but rather a blunted point. I suspect that the obvious wig the guy is wearing is concealing some sort of armored head protection. It would be absolutely *_insane_* not to take some precaution. Even if Hill never missed, he *_could_* miss, and even a blunted arrow to the back of the head could be fatal.

Practice practice practice. Just keep going until your arrows start hitting in groups and then when the grouping becomes a constant.. adjust to suit. With practice you'll be putting a dozen arrows in that tennis ball at 60yrds. You just have to put in the many hours it's gonna take. Eventually it's just second nature at any distance and you'll be able to send arrow after arrow exactly where you want. Just keep practicing and practicing and practicing. 👍

The American film about the long bow and referring to English sport as archery is full if Glaring Errors. Some time ago I waa watching another terrific American documentary that discussed the attack on Jerusalem by Richard I (the Lionheart) of England I'm 1227. Sadly King Richard would have missed the opening gambit of the 'battle' as Richard of Anjou, Coeur de Lion and King of England died in 1199. In this video the writers refer to the King of England in the 12th century being Richard III. Once again a Glaring error as Richard III reigned in the middle of the 14th century. Friendly fire we assume. Get it right boys!

Please do not assume that anyone is criticising the gentleman himself as a person or as an archer. It is the production companies that seem not to do their homework. If anyone has drawn a Long Bow fully to the ear they will know the physical strength needed to loose an arrow; then comes the aiming of the projectile under such strain. Well done Howard!

Modern arrow rest (window)built into a modern "longbow" which illimits the archers paradox. Also the draw weight of this trick shot bow was max 20 lbs jud. At 8 min 26s you see a shot where the arrow bounces back in view.after.hitting the target. I have never seen this happening using anything other than rubber tips.on any bow from 10 to 100 lbs. Apperantly mr Hughes used.rubber tip arrows.for his trick shots.and as seen in editing branches cutting blade arrow heads where standard target tips whould have been enough. Please, so not use this genteleman as an influence nor reference for your understanding of true medeival archery. Almost omitting to mention the part where this man wearing a heavy layer of false.hair kneeling with an apple.on his head is actually having a.layer of protection under his false hair to substain the hit of a rubber tip arrow shot as many times as necessary to get the film done..

What you said make a great deal of sense with the rubber tipped arrows in the event that one of them did accidentally hit one of his models, participants

Yeah, Muir. Makes sense. They were devious back then, too. That makes it less-scary. But ... "Hey! Eye-protection!?!"

oh man I saw this happen on a target hit with two arrows almost simultaneously, the first hit and sent the shockwave into the second causing it to bounce a meter away from the target. very cool phenomenon

Holy crap I can’t believe people actually believed this could possibly be real😂of course they wouldn’t endanger lives.

Brian C in the making of Robin Hood , stunt men who were willing to take an arrow in the chest or back would get $150 for each one. Big money back in the thirties. Under their costumes they wore wooden planks , they used real arrows and Howard never missed. So yeah , they would risk people’s lives and still do today.

Great shot who was confident enough to put humans in the kill zone. I wonder if the long hair on the stooge with the apple on his head was hiding a helmet. I hope so.

Very cool! thank you!Not many people know about what a great talent Howard Hill was! Oh by the way the palomino horse("Flying Cloud") in the "Robin Hood" classic was the horses' movie debut, so good, the horse was bought by Leonard sly(Roy Rogers) and renamed "Trigger" :)

These people clearly did not have any safety back then The girl sits like 1 m away from the target while that guy shoots towards her and the target from 10 m away as well as shooting an apple of a guys head 😖😖😖😖😖

The William Tell shot was significantly less dangerous than this video would have you believe. First of all, that man is wearing protection under a wig and costume. secondly, if you watch the arrow at 7:47 you will see that it bounces off the target, meaning that the sharp broadhead arrow is actually made of rubber. thirdly, he is using a much lighter bow than he normally would. So while he is really good, he is also not stoopid.

Tipical American reporting. The difference between Ribin of Locksley is that tornaments where shot at a hundred yards, not fifty foot. Plus most hunting bows ( used for tornaments) were fity pounds and i can tell you from persnal practice that you cannot hold a bowstring as he did with the mirrow at near waste hight. I come from a family of archers and started stooting at seven years old along with my sister, there were no fancy bows just after the war and my father was a master carpenter and made all the equipment arrows and all. At one hundred yards the target had a wall of staw bales behind it about ten foot, sometimes there where two walls of bales, and even then the arrows would escape through both and we would spend time looking for them as the tend to burrow their way into the ground. A shoot was 144 arrows in rounds of five and at closer range the target got a lot smaller and still do today. My family still pratice the art and are teaching their children as well so it will be a skill they have forever. As for hunting, mainly rabbit, its considered bad form to miss a sure kill shot, and nine times out of ten the arrow carried the rabbit a good few feet from the place it was first hit. The most amazing shoot was called clout, shoot at 200yard and wa usually done with what is known as a war bow. The target is marked out on the ground with small flags, thevsame size as a normal target, the idea was to shoot into the air and drop your arrow into the target, you would be amazed at how many arrows go way past the target at the begining, for this shoot i got my first full size bow with a draw weight of seventy five pounds at a twenty eigth inch draw length, that when wearing a chest guard came into its own for real.
