I am 71 now many years ago in 1965 my brother and I were enrolled at an archery club to take lessons we were young but had been shooting a couple years respectively. It was our second weekend of lessons my brother and I were dropped of early as usual to get a little practice in before lessons. In those days hunting was part of life and a great part. We lived on a farm but dad was a avid bow hunter and would bring magazines home on hunting,trapping so we knew who Mr Bear was. That day while waiting for lessons to start a man with a brown hat walked in the door with our coach that man was Mr Fred Bear It turns out they wear boyhood friends. The coach called us over and introduce us The man we all looked up to. That day each of us were given a brand new bow Bear of course and a dozen arrows. I will never forget that day or the man and I still have that bow. Many years later I would meet the man in the brown hat when he came by invitation to the bow shop I then owned. He was a wonderful kind man. Thought I would share this story. Blessings

Cool story - I never met Fred Bear myself, but I knew who he was. I learned to shoot a bow with one of his recurves when I was around twelve. I still hunt with a Fred Bear recurve I inherited from my father that my grandfather bought for him. Fred Bear is the original Great White Hunter.

I’m 56yo and started shooting a bear grizzly in 1976, I was 12. I never got to meet Mr Bear but out of respect to him and what his products have mean to me, I was out shopping at a good will store and came upon an old end table that was from the early 60s. I opened the leaf lid and inside was an old Bear catalog from 1972. I bought and restored the table and restored the catalog, I just could not let someone throw that away.

Reading about Fred Bear in the 60's got me interested in bowhunting. My first bow was a Fred Bear Grizzly Recurve. That #55 pound bow allowed me to take my first doe at age 14. I had taken my first buck with a rifle at age 13. I hunted with a bow all my life until I had my stroke at age 55 and could no longer pull one back. But, videos like this one help me to remember all those great hunts and days in the field with good friends. Thanks Fred for a lifetime of memories. R.I.P. my friend.

I had a 20# Bear youth bow when I was around 5 or 6 and over the years spent hours and hours in my back yard shooting. Then years later when I was about 35 a man in my church took me deer hunting with a bow for the first time and loaned me a recurve. I went in the back yard and practiced and found that it is rather like riding a bike, but you still needed to practice. He loaned me a bow and some arrows and the broadheads were those very same Fred Bear broadheads shown on this video and I shot my very first deer that day in December around Nowata, Oklahoma. That started me on my journey to become a bow hunter. I shot that deer and many more later on with a Bear compound and I have gone full circle back to a recurve. Hope to get another one this year. Thanks Fred for the inspiration.

Additionally if it wasn't for him; nowhere near as many people would be into archery in general. Just look at my playlist of Fred Bear. Skidoo tundra . In Alaska people still have those exact snow machines. They are easy to fix in the field and repair in the village and bullet proof. Although outdated. They still make a version of the tundra which is still very simple but reliable for tundra work compared to most sleds today.
@MatanuskaHIGH5 жыл бұрын
Dave Alexander maybe I’m thinking skandic? Idk maybe I’m thinking earlier 2000s but many Alaskans still use those sleds. Also you can still work on new sleds my buddy works on his all the time and he has a summit 800. My sleds are 96 Indy sks and 600 triple zrt. Haven’t dropped the dough on a newer sled yet but I can tell you that 500 Indy motor is bullet proof. Just keeps going and going. Light enough to dig out and lift by one guy and nimble. Not fast like the Zrt but also doesn’t need the maintenance that a triple demands. I’m thinking 90sto early 2000s skandic or tundras are common in remote areas for utilitiy sleds. They also run other cheaper sleds like Yamaha bravo and Indy’s but I’d say the tundra is 75% and other brands models make up the rest. Now in town and city most guys around here run long track mountain sleds summit and Polaris 800 etc. guys with some money get those bearcats for utility sleds but they also seem to need more work to keep running also. Slide made a trailer that goes with the old tundras also I’ve seen a few of them around here also. It’s cool to see snowmachine aka snowmobile aka sno-go history up here with all the old sleds that aren’t around anymore in many places and they still run.

They added fake bear growls in the screening room to make the bear sound more threatening. Sounded more like short snips of muffled lion bellowing. Polar Bears don't sound like that nor do they vocalize when still let alone while running. There vocalization is more of a heavy breath grunt. Polar Bears are generally silent as they need to be when stalking or sitting at a breathing hole.

Everyone had toys of cowboys shooting at indians. We had hunts and guns and wars and things were bad and people and animals died. That was the way it was. Every kid had a rifle or a bb gun as a present at some point. This was only a half century after the last indian slaughter recorded as wounded knee. People didn't think like they think now. You can't blame this man for doing this 60 years ago. He didn't know that a bunch of wimpy people would be offended in 60 years. He would laugh in your face and send you out to pet the bear first I would imagine. Use a little common sense when it comes to historical films like this. I'm not a big turkey hunter although I've killed probably 15 or twenty turkeys over the years. My friend has a crossbow and after I shot it it wasn't much different between a rifle and the crossbow in my eyes. He has a scope mounted on it and it's easy to load. I'll stick with my recurve. My hat is definitely off to Fread Bear,a great sportsman. I think 35 yards is definitely my Max. I can normally hit my mark the size of a quarter everytime but I've been doing this for 45years.

How many people can afford to take a month long expedition to do any type of hunting? Lucky Bastards!

Fred Bear once tried to hunt Chuck Norris in the Arctic But Chuck stayed under the ice flow 25 days to elude Fred.

Really nice video, I love it , but I think all the bear sounds were dubbed, polar bears are not that vocal as far as I know 😊

Number one way to get a polar bear quick.Cut a hole in the ice.Then place pea,s all the way around the hole.Wait until the bear come,s to take a pea.Then as quickly as possible,kick him in the ice hole.Worked like a charm for me,didn,t have to hunt but a couple of hour,s,and the shot was less than 2 feet max.

I love Fred Bear since I was a kid…but he should have gone to Churchill, Manitoba and set up at the municipal garbage dump! He would have bagged a bear in 25 minutes rather than busting his bottom in that cold for 25 days!

I've always wondered if shooting my longbow throughout the winter was hard on it but these guys are doing it without worry

As long as you thoroughly inspect your weapon before and after every hunt looking for the usual suspects such as Cracking on the limbs/risers, Fraying or damaged String.. Just Keep your string waxed and you shouldn't have any issues Shooting a LB in sub-zero temps... With that said, its actually the Heat that you need to worry about... The #1 mistake people make with LBs and really any type of bow... Their ignorance when it comes to Bow storage in the off season. just toss it in the shed, or in the back of a trunk, Few 100°+ weeks go by and they nearly shit themselves when a bomb goes off in their trunk... High heat+bowstrings under high pressure= Ticking time bomb....

Disclaimer- it is rare for any bow to blow up from just heat alone, many factors can come into play..Sure it may not blow up in your trunk, All I'm insinuating is it's not a great choice for storing your beautiful bow...
