I’ve watched multiple long videos on multi cam editing on DAVINCI Resolve, and they ALL go so fast and skip so many steps. They don’t explain the little details. It’s crazy how good you are at teaching. You explained and slowed down on and zoomed into and re explained EVERY LITTLE step and substep etc. this is how I prefer being taught, and especially as a complete beginner. I will record my first podcast episode soon and wanted a quick and easy way to add in multiple camera angles. God bless you. Most definitely earned my follow and I have the notification bell ringing because your teaching style is absolutely perfect (that can’t be said for even most professional teachers)

👍 Great video. As a total novice newb Davinci right now I jumped right into it with Multicam editing, (my wife held a 3 day event for entrepreneurs speaking 10 hours per day on stage, shot on 3 cameras and one screen recording of her PowerPoint slide deck during the presentation, so 4 cameras and 3 audio tracks, all to be used for her instructional digital marketing course. My syncing was a bit more clunky syncing al manually then saving each clip individually, then just using the "IN" for the sync when creating the multicam clip. When coming back in later if I forget to get everything set the sync is always still good. Its the long way and clunky, but helpful). Upgraded to studio with the purchase of the speed editor, (AMAZING TOOL, even if just for the scroll wheel, but especially for MultiCam editing)! Utilizing essentially the same workflow you outlined, the speed editor works in in all the tabs, not just the cut tab, and has the dedicated camera buttons, so as the its playing out in the timeline I just click the camera button # I want to transition to and presto. If I don't like the angle for a particular clip I chose I just place the playhead over that clip and double click the camera # that I want it it be and that entire clip becomes that new camera instantly. Thank you.

I love and appreciate this video. I didn't know how to do the colour grading for the individual clips. I was doing them all on the go and that is REALLY annoying once you have hundreds of cuts. I found if I did the video before multi cam, I then didn't have control of what I had done and it saved everything I had as the default. I actually would do my multi cams and when I switched cams, I would change the second camera to a different colour, so I could colour grade one of the small cut clips and then paste the attributes onto the other clips with that colour. It was not a great method, but it is all I knew. Yours will be so much easier.

I am doing a lot of MC ( 4 cameras and many mics and audiorecorders ) recording events/seminars/conferences.. When I moved to DVR I had to figure out a workflow that works for me so I can focus on the editing and cutting. Viewing your video I realize that I figured it out right - I am doing it almost as you do. I also make sure that I have at least one camera ( or audiorecorder ) turned on during the full length of the events to use as a base for syncing other sources. TIP: I am not using my Speed Editor that came with the DVR Studio license very much but it is very useful for MC-editing. Easy to switch angles, scroll the timeline and very important - double-click on a new angle if you cut into the wrong angle which often happens. Really enjoy and learning much from your DVR videos :-)

Great video. I didn't think about that colour grading approach for multi cam. It's a great idea, but I think it would only work on 100% controlled lighting situations and/or short videos. I have 30 minute multicam clips of interviews that get cut down to 5 minutes, and there's often a window within the room somewhere with light that can shift a touch, so I need to make tiny adjustments in white balance, light or power window a face, which requires independent coloring control per cut segment of the one clip, if you get me. Otherwise, you've nailed everything I recon there is to know about getting up and running with multi-cam clip editing.

Hi Jason, great video. It's nice to see different approaches to the same topic, it's given me some good ideas to apply to my Multicam. I've been looking at how you do the color part, I'm just telling you because you mentioned that there's surely a faster way to do that. When you're in the color part, you have clips active, but if you also activate Timeline, all the multicam tracks appear with their name on the left side and from there you can hide and reactivate the tracks you want by clicking on them. It would be the same as you do from Edit but without leaving Color, much faster and less stressful. In case you want to try it, greetings

Totally easier with Multicam clips. It’s so much faster just to click the angle that you want while you’re watching it back, make a few fine adjustments and you’re good to go. No need to key frame and do all that stuff that takes more time. I’ve been doing a bunch of multicam work lately and it’s super quick and easy once everything is synced up inside the multicam clip.

Great video! Learned a ton. I did have one question, though: How do you do talking head vids with multicam clips? Meaning, I want to show video track 1 (of my talking head) AND video track 2 (of the screen recording) at the same time -- with, of course, the talking head in a small circle overlaid on video track 2.
@JasonYadlovski9 ай бұрын
Thanks! To do what you just mentioned, you don’t need to use a multicam clip. That’s exactly how I make my videos, I just put the Talking Heads track above my video to track, the screen recording, then you can just put the talking head in a DVE effect or circle or whatever you want. No reason to use a multicam clip for just two tracks like that.

@@JasonYadlovski Got it! And wow, thanks for the quick reply! One more question, if you don't mind 🙂 I'm trying to use Recut to automatically cut out silence from my videos. The challenge is that I need to cut out the content from my talking head video track and my screen recording. That's why I was trying to consolidate multiple clips into 1 so that I can export it as 1 file into Recut. But, perhaps you have a better solution for this!
@JasonYadlovski9 ай бұрын
I actually use re-cut all the time as well. What I do is record my Talking Heads and my screen at the same time, both recording audio. Then in recut, bring in both, you’re talking head and your screen recording, sync the Clips, and then let Recut do its job. Export that out and then you can import that timeline into Davinci resolve, and everything will be cut for you. You don’t need a multicam clip to do it.

AUDIO QUESTION: I'm interviewing a guest. How do I bring both audios into one track? Let's say I am asking her a question, and in the middle of me asking, the guest clears their Throat? How would I isolate it? Moreover, how would it be mixed, or how would both audio tracks be used for L and J cuts between them both? What capture device are you using? I am thinking about getting the DeckLink 8K Pro or the DeckLink 4K Extreme 12G
@JasonYadlovski7 ай бұрын
If you are using a multicam clip to make your edit and I'm assuming each person has their own mic, you can use the option in the multicam viewer to cut the audio and video tracks. Then it will change the audio angles along with the video angles. If you want to change an audio track, just right click on it and towards the bottom of the menu, you can change the audio 'angle'. For me, I record everything to a C100MKII including scratch audio. For my main audio, I record using an MKE 600 into an Audient EVO4 interface into my computer. On the computer, I'll either record directly into Resolve or into Screenflow - my screen recording software.

Hello Jason, liked and subscribed :) Great video! Just one question: why did you synch first the c100 with the mic? Why not create directly the multicam clip with the 3 cams and the micro at the same time without that first step? Because it would also synch by sound the 4 files and in the editing phase you could only use the micro track as the main audio. That way you did not have to do the first synch at all. Keep up the good work, regards.
@JasonYadlovski2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the sub, welcome to the community! I sync the mic w/ the c100 first, just because I like the audio to be linked with that clip. I do this even when I'm not using a Multicam clip, so it's just part of my workflow to do it that way. But you could have an extra audio track inside the Multicam clip and have that be the main audio. Either way works. 👍

I am noticing that the ends of my clips are cropped and I have no idea why. In the multicam window the whole shot is there, but in the timeline preview window they are cropped. Do you know why I am experiencing this and how I can fix it? Thank you!!
@JasonYadlovski5 ай бұрын
Thanks! Sometimes, a crop gets applied to the clips, double check the inspector and see if a crop was applied. There's a setting when setting up the timeline where you can choose 'mismatched resolution' and it might be set to full frame with crop. You might want to use a different option. But for now, I'd just scale up the clip and make sure there's no crop on it.

A few pointers - one - not good practice to name angles to the camera type - you can imagine the confusion for someone if there are many takes and the same cameras are used or the insignificance of an angle being name 60D when it's concert footage and there might be multiples of the same camera but in some of the videos that I have done 14 or 15 angles. For multicam, I would suggest that people use a naming convention that the editor or the colorist can easily tell what the angle is mid-left, mid-center, mid - right , Close up left etc. We used to use ML, MC, MR etc. I'm also a bit confused to why you synced the good audio with the camera first as well. I get that you do it that way. But you aren't changing the audio - you are only referencing the main audio - so not sure what benefit that step had, and it may confuse people who haven't done this before. The color grading part- you are actually making more steps than you need. Firstly - without using stacked timelines etc., if you right click the multicam where you were doing the editing, and choose - "Open in Timeline" you get to the stacked timeline - at the bottom it will leave a breadcrumb link trail ( to get back later to where you started ) - Now on the color page below the source monitor - just left of the little speaker icon is the "unmix" icon. When you turn that on, you can go from clip to clip and color grade. No need to go back and turn off tracks. You need to see all your clips to match the grades - so using the unmix option you can grade it just like any other video. When doing it this way be aware what happens when someone flattens the multicam - I don't know if it still happens but flattening the multicam used to wipe out the color grading done as we are discussing. Only mentioning because I had it happen to me with a 1.5 hour concert, and I had to go back with the flattened footage and put everything into groups and start over - so this I understand this isn't a color grading tutorial - but from experience when you grade even with small amounts of angles ( you had three ) grab a still of each angle - so if you have to go back and do what I did and assign same angles to groups - you can then just use the stills to put the grade back on the footage. Then of course clicking back to the editing tab to the stacked multicam - you just need to click back to the first link in that breadcrumb link ( bottom left in the timeline ) and you're back to where you started. This can be done at anytime as well, some people think they have to do it up front but you can complete the whole edit and go back and follow those steps and grade anytime. We also used to just sync all the video tracks with whatever scratch audio there was and when the real audio got mixed drop a master audio below the audio channel on the edited timeline and sync it manually and turn off the multican audio. With large projects ( concert footage ) the mix was done somewhere else and if everyone had to wait until it was mixed, it would back up production time. Also don't know why people shy from the cut page for multicam - it is quite unique and can be quite interesting to use. I did a couple of projects using the cut page - I actually used it to get every nuance in a concert that I edited by starting with an angle of the lead singer then musician by musician, I brought up their angle and from start to finish you can mark in and out when say a drummer does a cool fill and drop it right in sync over the main track - you keep working that way and by the end of the song - every cool fill is done - then go to the guitar player angle - mark in and out for the solo and just insert and so on. By the time you get through all the solos - most of the video is edited and nothing is overlooked. It is unconventional, but kind of cool. And it is never hard on your computer because in the end there is just two or three tracks on the master at any given time.

Hi Jason, I've been in the industry for years and working on DaVinci. However, since DaVinci 18.5 the live Multicam viewer constantly lags when playing even just two angles. On previous projects I was running 5 angles with colour grade all simultaneously, and now for the past year DaVinci has lagged trying to run the muticam viewer and even after removing the Multicam viewer it then proceeds to lag until I restart the software. I'm on a completely maxed out M2 Max Macbook. I'm usually a tech whiz at all things computer and editing related, but this has stumped for for over a year and haven't been able to find anything to solve it, even downgrading back to 18.5. Hey! It should playback ok, did you try adjusting the playback settings? Maybe work in a 1080 timeline if you're currently using a 4k timeline? I'm also assuming you're using Studio, correct? Hopefully you figured it out by now since I'm late to reply. 😜

@@JasonYadlovski Hey Jason! Thanks for your reply. I still don't have a solution and in the past it's always been a 4K timeline with 4K output so I've no idea how it was running multiple streams easily in 4K and now it can't handle two. Also yep I'm on the studio version and even when going on to a 1080p timeline it still lags. It was also the original media, no proxies or optimised media. I'll keep looking but it's been over a year and now I'm starting to think I imagined it haha. I will update here if I find a solution. Thanks!

A bit off topic, but what lenses do you use for the Canon 60D? I have a 70D and I thought it wasn't enough because there is a lot of noise with the Sigma 17-50 f2.8. It seems the problem is me and not the camera. Your footage is indistinguishable between different cameras.

I have several lenses I use between my Canon 5D Mark IV, 60D and my C100 mark II. I have the Canon 50mm f1.4, Canon 16-35 f4L IS, Canon 24-70 f2.8L II, Canon 70-200 f2.8L III, and specifically for the 60d, I have a 10-22 f3.5-4.5 and the kit lens, 18-135. They all match up pretty well, just a little bit of color grading.

Very hepful tips, thanks. But one important point, Fairlight doesn't work with multicam in Resolve. As soon as we return to the Edit page we lose all the settings. Apparently this is a known problem and it's a shame, it would have been so handy to use fairlight like the Color page!

Yes, just select them all in the timeline, right click and you can change the ‘angle’ of the clips all at once.

Hey! Starting with a multicam clip right in the beginning is going to be the easiest way and prevent headaches for sure. That's what I would recommend doing. If you have trouble syncing up clips, you can always open the multicam clip in the timeline and move stuff manually for a good sync. Then you can cruise through w/ a multicam edit.

I love multicamming in DaVinci and have been doing it for a while but I recently downloaded the 18.6 update and for some reason I don’t have the double window viewer button option anymore. I also have to double click the track to get to the source & multicam drop down menu but when I click from source to the multicam option it goes to transform instead and switches menus entirely. Do you think it’s a bug in my update? It’s frustrating the heck out of me…

Jay, curious at 9:50 - 10:30 where you select your main angles that the Audio C100 doesn't appear in the previewer after you change from MKE600. Looking at the timeline, the mains are displayed in the left corner of each track correctly as C100, but C100 Audio never appears in the previewer. Then you went to 4x4 default windows and I expected C100 Audio to appear as a 4th window but it did not- MKE600 continues to display. Maybe it is explained further on in the video but I needed to get this question posted while I still remembered the issue. 😕 Can you help, please?
@JasonYadlovski9 ай бұрын
Got ya, so the audio is part of the C100 video clip (synced up to it), so it would just be with the C100 video clip, it would not show as a separate audio track, unless it was in-fact a complete separate audio track and not associated with any video clips. That MKE6009 audio clips was an audio only clip. There was no video associated with the original clip. Does that clarify it?

I have multiple cameras with each camera recording multiple channels of audio (lav, boom etc). Currently in my multicam sequence, I only see one track that contains all audio channels with no ability to select or adjust a specific audio channel .How can I select specific audio channels within multicam?
@JasonYadlovski8 ай бұрын
Hey! When you created the mulitcam clip and you open it in the timeline (right click on mulitcam clip and choose open in timeline), do you see all of your audio tracks in there? They should be there. When you are in your regular timeline and bring in the multicam clip and open the multicam clip viewer, you've got the option to change the video angle, the audio angle or both. In the multicam viewer on the left, hover the mouse near the bottom of the window and you'll see 3 different icons. One is video only, one is audio only and one is both. You can set it to be the one you'd like. If you need to change something in the timeline after making the cuts, you can select a clip, right click on it, go towards the bottom of the pop up window and change the audio 'angle' or track/channel from the Multicam clip. Does this help?

@@JasonYadlovski thank you so much for the quick response! I have opened the multi-cam sequence by "opening in timeline," and I see one audio track per camera. The issue is that each audio track includes all 3 channels of audio that were being recorded into the camera. For example, on camera A we had two lavs, and a shotgun mic recording to the camera (3 channels). The audio track I see in the multicam sequence for that camera includes all three tracks, with no way of selecting which channel I want to hear. Instead, I hear all 3 channels of audio. I am hoping to find a way to select which channel of audio is being heard instead of all three. I have searched around online and the only answer to this issue is that people have requested Da Vinci fix this issue and that there is a work around. :(
@JasonYadlovski8 ай бұрын
Oh, I see what you mean. Sure we can fix that. Just select an audio track while you have the multicam clip 'opened in timeline'. Then Right click and choose clip attributes, and go to the audio tab along the top. In there you should see a drop down menu with all of the sources that are part of that track You can either delete some or just make them all the same source. That should do that trick for you. If you have troubles, let me know and I'll see if I can help more. 👍

How to work if an angle has multiple audio tracks?

You can make your cuts using just the video, just the audio or both the video and audio. There's a little icon just below the multicam viewer. If the track inside the multicam clip has multiple audio tracks, you an select the one you want to use or make multiple copies of the audio clip and change the source of the clip to be able to use all sources in a clip. Im just gonna ask. I recorded myself as three different characters. They are auditioning an actor who gets roasted the whole time. I recorded on Komodo, the FX3 and through my Ninja V for 12 but pro res raw. Look, I’ve had tough edits before, but OMG this is absolutely insane. Obviously I have to split the frame in have for the wide shot of the director & producer, (both me) in the color page, so the left & right frame allowing both characters to be in the shot for the wide, then I have have my Komodo as the CU shot. I have to sync audio as well. Then, I have my actors 2 angles and audio. I hope this doesn’t sound confusing, but could anyone, ANYONE, suggest a solution? This technique is great for linking the cameras, & audio, but remember, I also have the problem of needing to see both sides of the frames so I can link their reactions? I really feel I should deserve an academy award for this…good lord.. Thank you in advance Jason!
@JasonYadlovski2 ай бұрын
Hey! Sounds a little complicated, haha, but I'd try to get everything lined up and synced to start with. Once you get that, in the color page, you can create your masking for the wide shot and just copy it to all the other clips. You could even make those 2 clips into a compound clip so it appears as one clip in the timeline. Once you do that, you could add the angles into a multicam clip, so all you ave to do is change angles when you want, you don't have to mess with cutting/deleting, etc.

What a complicated mess... I just spent three hours with your video, and several hours with other Resolve Multi-cam videos trying to get an editable multi-cam clip, and that this point, I wish I'd have fired-up my old windows 8 PC from 8 years ago and just used Sony Vegas or Avid. For 3 years I edited a weekly, 2-hour 4-cam, 6-channel audio TV program, Using Sony Vegas. I could edit and rip that two-hour program 4-cam program in a day, where with Premiere, after three days of fighting crashes, sync-issues and the horrible timeline the final render would typically fail. Final Cut was cumbersome, and clunky. A "professional" editor went to my client and said "VEGAS was the slowest and worst editor available, and that he could do the project in Premiere in a couple of hours. I gave him the files and after two days was still trying to edit by manually cutting and pasting camera clips as the multi-cam timeline would crash. After 5 days later he was trying to get a successful render. In a long, complex multi-cam edit you inevitably need to adjust and add clips, graphics audio, and having an open, flexible timeline is often a must. All the workflows I'm seeing online using Resolve seem to make that difficult or impossible? For grading Resolve seems the best but WTF with Multi-cam? Are well all missing something or is the interface not fit for purpose?
