Might be worth talking with other folks in your community and ordering a few to one spot and then distributing them!
(We're note affiliated with them or get anything for promoting them, just believe strongly in their incredible tool!)
• Husking/Hulling Black ... - Video showing how we process Black Walnuts at a homestead scale. We aim for thousands and thousands each year so they can be a real part of our diet. With the Master Nut Cracker and a basement full of nuts winter can feel like a real treat!

English walnuts are too easy, lol. But that's impressive with the hickory and black walnuts. I've always used a vice, but your tool looks like it works really well, and efficiently enough to be practical for a lot of nuts! I'm with you that Shagbark hickory nuts are the best tasting nuts of all. I think, followed by the Shellbark hickory, then black walnuts, then pecans, then English walnuts, then hazelnuts. Chestnuts are in there somewhere, but since they get cooked first, I don't count them the same way. Here's to an enjoyable winter of eating nuts! They are so underappreciated as real food.

It definitemy can be stained with the juice from the pulp exterior. It's full of tanins. Just use the water drained from the sheats (let to cold-infuseint it, just a day to much longer) It also renders the wood less apetizing for many bugs

@CaptainCocktale
@CaptainCocktale 4 жыл бұрын
@@mcd5478 the question is do you leave them all for the squirrels or do you pilfer some for yourself? I have never lived where it gets cold enough that the native critters exhibit these kinds of natural bbehaviors so this just amazed me that they instinctually know to do this. I wonder if I will see more of now that we live on a much larger heavily wooded piece of land in S.W. Louisiana. We have loads of wildlife and I love it! But the only nut tree I've found on our property so far is a hickory nut tree.

I don't know comparatively how hard to crack the walnuts here in France are, but my husband's technique is to insert the point of a knife into the fibrous joint at the bottom (or non-pointed) end of the nut and twist the blade like a lever or key to pop the two halves apart. The master nit cracker looks great, but I imagine shipping it here would be prohibitive. 😕

I have a hard time keeping them (walnut trees) from popping up all over the place. Before I pick them up to husk them or after I have them in trays to dry out squirrels are grabbing them and planting them for me- everywhere. I always find three or four growing mid-spring in my raised beds that I grow vegetables in. I believe if you simply bury them a couple of inches of soil they will grow. I say this because squirrels don't have the internet.

To everyone using the link in 2024, please know that the master nutcracker website is pretty much outdated/broken as of 2/23/24. There seems to be no real solid evidence of it still being in production (that I can find). LEM has made or collaborates with a company called Roots and Harvest which basically copies the design, but seems to be made with inferior parts (reviews mention issues with bolts). Overall, the replica apperas to get the job done for most people after some slight modification if issues arise.
