I was lucky enough to discover Famous Monsters in the early '60's. I had a paper route in LA and was surprised that Forry was on my paper route when he lived on Sherbourne N. of Olympic in 1963! (I was 8 years old!) I rang his bell and he invited me in and the rest was history! He was the kindest man who always treated me as if my opinion mattered! I loved him for that! Thank you Forry for the best childhood a kid could ask for! I loved watching "Weird Weird World," "Strange Tales of Science Fiction," and of course on Friday nights "Chiller!"

Your video made me cry tonight. I met Forry at his mansion in the Hollywood Hills and I worked for him for a time back in the early 1980's. I used to vacuum the lower floor and dust and take out trash or he, my husband and myself would hang out in his kitchen and cook, chat and eat to review with Forry of what work he wanted us to help him with. One of the job's was to box up comic books and some famous monsters magazines he wanted stored away. My 1st husband is deceased and our only child still lives in L.A. county. As do the grandchildren. Our daughter will be 40 years old this year and we will always have her and our grandkids as our bond. I loved dusting off metropolis when she was still encased downstairs. Forry did tell us of how his intellectual items were stolen. I still believe him. It was an ugly ordeal for him 😢 I miss his wife and was shocked when I learned of what happened to her 😢 I'll try to remember all I can about Forry as in 1979 I developed a traumatic brain injury before I worked for Forry. Before my daughter was born. Now that time has taken what it wanted of us all I need to learn to let go of the past but it sure is a difficult feat. So sad the mansion was sold but not that I saw it in all of it's glorious hay days. In loving memory to Uncle Forry I just had to say something about the fun times we had in the early 1980's. Before I met Forry I had no idea there were "sci-fi" shows. Never heard of science fiction. Being from the east coast I'm #8 of 9 children who was raised on a tobacco farm in Maryland. Whole new story in itself 😊. Opposite of "sci-fi" 😆. I'll leave you with the above and hope I hear from you sometime soon 😊 Janet Birch Callea Jenkins. Thank you for sharing that beautiful memory with us! Forry was a kind soul...especially to the kids that marveled at his stories about the movies and stories of his friends. Saw him in his glory days in 1974 and 1975 at the Famous Monsters of Filmland convention. He was like the Pied Piper to the kids...and adults!

It’s an incredible tragedy that no one came to Mr. Ackerman’s aid and built a museum…that his magazine and collection and home were lost. We are fortunate that we at least have his legacy. He invented and legitimized “nerd/fan” culture. Basically, he’s the father of our entire pop culture. I wish I could’ve met him. One of a kind…the end made me cry.

Forry didn't "lose" his magazine,he never owned it. Jim Warren owned FM from the 50's until the 80's. Ray Ferry owned it in the 1990's. Forry was just an employee of both publishers,and Forry resigned his position from both of them.

A lovely documentary! I knew Forry very well and really liked him even though it wasn't always easy for me to accept his eccentric and sometimes egocentric behaviour.

Quite a while back, I traveled with friends to Atlanta Fantasy Fair to see Jack Kirby. My bonus and favorite memory of that trip was meeting Uncle Forry and getting his autograph. He tried to sell me a poster I couldn't afford, but we kept talking anyway. A very interesting man. I should have spent more time with him. It was a miracle that I met this legend.

Great little doc about an amazing man. I picked up my first copy of Monsters of Movieland in 1971. Still have a few to this day. I'll have to pull them out now and re-read them.

I was born 1949 and was Overcome by Science Fiction and Famour Monsters of Filmland was one on my Subscribed Magazines, Popular Electronics another, I has the first Steve Ditko Spiderman comics, Hot Rod magavines I was a "50's Bookworm" reading Monsters and listening to Short Wave Radios. Grew up in Waco, Texas.

Began my love affair with monster movies in 1963 at seven years old , no different today at 66 , Long live these great films & all the memories & cool stuff Forest left us & all the actors that brought us nightmare's as kids , as good then as it is today but more fun as a kid. Still have many old issues of Famous monsters & cherish them , what monster & horror fan would not. Sad for the young kids that need gore to get them off & they have lost the feel of simplicity . Ah we love our glorious Black & White !!!! Thank you Forry for making our lives a bit more fun. RIP, you will never be forgotten.

Even though I lived in Australia where Famous Monsters was banned till the 1970s, I knew all about Forry and one of my most memorable convention-going moments was talking to him at the World SF Convention - after we'd chatted for a few minutes, he asked if I'd like to join some local fans who were meeting him for lunch in the hotel restaurant. I was stunned for a moment then managed to get out "YES!"

As a young boy from Langford on Vancouver Island in British Columbia Canada the 1960's media was TV - radio and the newspaper/magazine's ! Famous Monsters was the holy grail along with Friday nights midnight horror movies ! I understand the collection was mostly sold and Peter Jackson owns a major part of the items !!
