Carl Mydens! One of my favorite photojournalists. * Almost always I absolutely HATE tilted photos. They're usually made by beginner photographers trying to be cute. But I really like this one. The tilt is necessary here. It puts the viewer as off balance as the model is supposed to be and creates tension. I've seen the video on how this photo was made several times.

I've known Joe since 2000, when the company I was working for at the time hired him to shoot the Annual Report that year. I traveled with him a lot over the next couple of years for projects. I remember sitting in a Sizzler (or Ground Round) in Michigan and he was telling me about his career. Not boasting, just because I was asking questions and interested. I told him he was like the Indiana Jones of Photography with all he's seen and done. And yet...I still learn new things about him when I listen to interviews. Never knew the assisted Gordon Parks. "Shoot entire to detail" is a mantra I've shot by for a long time. "Work the Scene" and "Put your camera in a new place" are two other McNallyisms if try to follow. I highly recommend his new book. It's stellar.

This just came up in my KZbin suggestions. Surprised I haven’t seen this channel before. Just instant-subscribed to the TY as well as podcast. Really good job. I’m about 3/4 the way through the new book and am enjoying it a lot. It’s definitely a book I’ll read more than once. Having read so many how-to photography books, I’m really enjoying that this is different… that it’s about the relationships that come about while working as a photographer… and also about the sacrifice, like when Joe mentions how he’d be away on long assignments for Nat Geo and the stress it caused by not seeing his family. Just talks about everything around photography. Great interview, looking forward to checking out past and future content from this channel.

Love the photo and the interview. Thanks! When I first saw the photo it looked photoshopped... Particularly the busts looked that way and then I realized in the interview that what I was noticing was wide angle "distortion". Would love to hear if Joe also shot this on a longer lens and how that worked

Thanks for watching, and great question. He mentioned having a number of shots but liked this one. I wonder now if they were all basically the same setup and focal length.
