I guess his tone must be a guilty pleasure for me. So many people seem to dislike it and criticize it, but I personally LOVE that dirty, fuzzy, slightly sloppy and frantic sound. I think it’s so un-basslike that it’s perversely enjoyable, really really unique. Love it or hate it, I’ve personally never heard another bass player like him. And I love it.
@SpectorEuro43 жыл бұрын
If you've never heard another fuzz bass, then you need to know more music. Lemmy from Motorhead is a great example
@Freudenfreude13 жыл бұрын
Lemmy is also criticized for being sloppy. Honestly I think it’s more that the fuzzy effect can make otherwise clean playing sound sloppier because of the latency involved in that effect. Cliff was a very adept and impressive player. Where he isn’t as “precise” is often a stylistic choice.
@chrisbassartist43444 ай бұрын
Personally I don’t like his tone unless he’s soloing he is the reason I wanted to play bass though and it sits well in the mix not by itself though not my taste I like a smooth bass tone closer to Steve Harris

Before uploading, I checked (again) how Cliff played the verse and the fast bridge after solo. And yes: he did the verse with slides (Rob - with hammer-on and pull-off), and the bridge - with D and A fretted (Rob does open). BUT. Cliff played the verse modulation on A string, just like the guitar (0-2-3-2-0-2), while Jason and Rob do it the way I tabbed (7-9-10-9-7-9). Thanks for pointing out at that! I hope you found this video helpful anyway. Support me on Patreon, to keep the channel going bit.ly/andriys-patreon See you in October, friends! \m/

A thing that i noticed hearing more slowly and with details the metallica's bass is that the bass lines in their songs is one of the strongest things of Metallica. I dont know much of bass but the bass lines often are really really good, specially cliff's lines, compliment the song very cool, in the spaces when the guitar let a chord sounding. For me the bass in metallica songs must have been louder (sorry my english, i'm chilean jeje)

Very interesting thing to listen to, Cliff definitely provides a melodic glue that the guitars do NOT provide. Part of the dryness of the Justice album can be heard from this bass track. Jason wasn’t encouraged to wander around the guitar track and he was mixed down so it wouldn’t matter if he did. I actually play guitar similar to this, and I never knew why. I’m sure I am just playing the bass parts without realising. We will never ever know what would happen to Metallica without that accident. There is no question that Lars was necessary but he would have been gone if Cliff stayed. This track definitely raises a lot of questions. Great work.

Another excellent job with the tabbing overall, but at the end of the chorus (e.g. at 3:30), I think the final notes of Cliff's fill (on the E-string) are 3-3 0-0, not 3-2 0-0 as your tab has it.
@irushforth3 жыл бұрын
Also, I wonder if the pair of A notes which precede that in the fill are played on the 5th fret of the E-string, rather than the open A-string? I certainly find that it flows better that way when I play it. (i.e. A-String 3-3-2-2 E-String 5-5-3-3 0-0)

Very cool- although I always wondered why Cliff just didn't match the main riff that the guitars play? It should have been in his technical ability, and it actually sounds better when metallica plays this live--as the bassist usually doubles the main riff now.
@misterscorbunny55246 жыл бұрын
battery, fight fire with fire and this are the only ones that come to mind
@TheChenny736 жыл бұрын
Cliff understood the role of the bass. His job wasn’t to match the guitars. His role was to lay down the foundation. There is a reason the album sounds so good. It had to do with the notes he chose. He must has tried many different lines mixing with guitars and listen ing back to hear the results. He ended up with what you hear here because it worked best when mixed with guitars.
@SpectorEuro43 жыл бұрын
@@TheChenny73 I wish I could agree, but I can't. Cliff's bass or not, his bass was buried in the mix, and you can barely notice his tone. Bass-less songs on youtube take out all the low frequencies (including the 6-7 guitar layers) which makes the song sounds bad. But if you could take out the actual bass track, you won't notice it at all.

I just got done recording my own cover of the song and I played the same notes exactly like cliff , and then I recorded the other guitars and at first I thought I was gonna have to re do the bass lines to match the guitars cause it was clashing too much but after I EQd everything a little different and adjusted volume levels.....I guess it's working.
