Man, this is great! I've listened to Ktulu and Orion a thousand times if I've listened to them once. It's always such an experience to hear it's complexity and the different parts weaving and swirling around each other like waters in a maelstrom. Increasingly frantic, yet perfectly beautiful and organized. The power and forces of what drives it is almost mysterious. You know that you had better not play it if you don't have 10 minutes to spare, because it's going to suck you in and hold you there until it's finished. Cliff Burton's parts in the original mix are like an undercurrent which are crucial to the song's power. I love this mix and I love that Burton's bass line is illustrated in the video as tab/sheet music. It allows you to observe what's going on more clearly and to better appreciate Burton's skills. Nicely done!

You just strum the dyad as you normally would on guitar, using your index finger as the pick. I didn't hear it as a strum originally. I heard it as two notes, then three strikes on the dyad. Alternately, I heard it as a pull-off pattern on the D-minor arpeggio. Cliff was one of my biggest influences when I picked up the bass in 1989. His tone, style, technique and who he was as a man will NEVER be duplicated. That Morley wah is a must have in the bass player arsenal. Though super popular, the Cry Baby wah is just too weak in my book for this sound. I think distortion was a Big Muff fuzz pedal, but hard to know for sure.

In bars 110 and 111 - Cliff did a slow climb-down. Have a listen out for it at just after 4:47 - it's definitely there in the mix (though your otherwise excellent tab misses it). Here's my attempt to score it (all notes sustained for either two or one-and-a-half beats - so some fall on the 'and' counts of the beats): Bar 110, Beat 1 - Open D Bar 110, Beat 3 - D12 Bar 110, the 'and' count after Beat 4 - D10 Bar 111, Beat 2 - A12 (or D7 if you stay on the same string) Bar 111, the 'and' count after Beat 3 - E13 (or D3) Then the first beat of bar 112 would be on E10 or Open D to complete/resolve the climbdown (although Cliff might have started doing the crazy stuff high up the fretboard by then!)

I didn't fully appreciate this song until I heard this video

It perplexes me how you were able to transcribe this at all. I can't hear the bass guitar in the original very well on many parts of the song (that is, when he isn't using the wah pedal or shredding with distortion); in fact, I was surprised that the bass parts were so different from the guitar parts! I'm making a chiptune version of this song, so I was trying to transcribe this song by ear, but when I saw you playing one of the bass riffs in a video, I then realized that I was not going to be able to transcribe the bass riffs accurately because they weren't a copy of the guitar parts, and I can't hear them at all! yaaaay! (^^;

Andriy Vasylenko. Years?! Thanks for being to dedicated to transcribing these pieces. If I knew it'd take years to learn the bass part by ear, I'd've given up. lol
