I just want to say his pronunciation of "undulation" is pretty entertaining! Australians are freaking awesome! He's a pretty funny guy to watch and his Butterfly is very beautiful. Dang I can't wait to learn this. I need to learn how to do that hip dive

Thanks for doing fly. Fly swum when tired 💤 ( and slow) is a killer it just fails. Also Thankyou for the reminder of chest down,hips up/ undulation ( kids don’t get that word ) and quick tempo. Certainly a pleasure to watch. What’s next ?

thank you for the video. You're the first instructor I've seen address the tempo and how it connects and affects other technical requirements of this stroke. For the longest time I've struggled to keep my hips up and how fast or slow to tempo should be. I've seen The Shaw way to fly, where they go really slowly and gracefully with big undulations. and then there's the racing butterfly where the emphasis is on speed. Would you say that butterfly is easier done at faster pace than slower one? Again, thank you!!

Thanks for the video. I may just be getting too old and inflexible to swim that great, as I can see that during the catch phase of your stroke you exhibit much more shoulder flexibility than I have. It's hard for me to describe, but at the front end of my fly, my arms are extended overhead, but almost in line with my body and looking quite flat, rather than the exaggerated position you get into (most evident around 3:10). I'll keep practising and keep the three components in mind.

Hey Phlex. Been away for a solid 2 months haha, cuz studies. Thanks for another vid on butterfly. Been trying for the better part of a year now and not getting anywhere so far. I was always wondering about undulation, cuz I've always approached the undulation part the way I do with underwaters, fast kicking with hyperstreamlining. Based on what I saw in this video, that approach seems to be wrong now, isn't it? Thank you so much for this particular pointer on keeping the hips as high out of the water as possible. Will try it when I get to the pool soon. P.S. Nice swim trunks Luke x)
@PhlexSwim6 жыл бұрын
Hey!! Hope all has been well! We missed you, but glad you are back. The undulation in butterfly is definitely a different dynamic than the normal stroke. You can refer back to one of Lukes past videos where he breaks down three steps to better feel for your butterfly to learn that undulation a bit better.

@IvanCapitani5 жыл бұрын
your thoughts about the underwater catch? i've heard different opinions from coaches. seen a whole video about deep vs shallow catch, saying the shallow catch is more efficient than the deep one. also, should hands really come very close to each other during the "S" underwater phase? personally i find it just more tiring and it doesn't help my speed. a "waist" distance from each other works better for me...
@sickoid876 жыл бұрын
Good shape man. Must be doing gym a lot. Good set of priorities as well. I'd also add rhythm and timing as the crucial component here. Most newbies have no idea when do their legs have to kick relatively to the arm cycle. P. S. On 3:07 the shoulders and arms are dropped right after the hands entry (no high catch). This illustrates that the 5th component must be good flexibility which is hard to maintain with age.

I disagree "Butterfly is the most complex stroke out there". In fact, as a coach, its the easiest to teach. Freestyle much more complicated with "22 points to master and coordinate". Breastroke tough for even "breastrokers" to perfect. Backstroke is disconconcerting to most swimmers. Fly is natural and easiest
@Warscar.6 жыл бұрын
Nico Montinola as a professional swimmer its the hardest to master. I see how people struggle in first few months unlike the rest of strokes. It needs mass practice. I can say thay if you do not have special ability it takes a year to become a natural butterfly swimmer. Freestyle? No it takes max 3 months to swim coordinated

I just made my high school swim team about a month ago. This is my first time swimming competitively and I have to say, I love it. It seems butterfly is my stroke though, I have the second fastest time on the team for 100 fly already. I have to say though, this is definitely going to help me improve on my stroke and hopefully drop more time! Wish me luck at invitationals tomorrow :')
