Wow, this is SO VERY helpful. I am 45 and don't know how to swim butterfly. But not I think I do have a chance to learn it, step by step.

Just a few of lines to deeply thank you for having helping me to improve my scarcy butterfly. They were years I was searching for to learn the right drills to move streamline in to the water in butterfly and watching at your "butterfly float pull drill with arm recovery" a shining light came into my head and finally I understand the right floating movement. Perhaps you don't realize how useful be your drills movies for us swimming beguinners all around the world. Thanks again from Italy.

I watched because I had a meet the next day, helped a bunch by watching those people. I saw how to position my arms better. Thanks for posting such a helpful video!

watched this and tried the vertical dolphin kick. what a rush!!! my heart was pounding just to get my head above water!! then i streamlined but i couldnt keep my head above water. afterwards doing dolphin kicks and wigglers becomes natural but still need time to pefect the technique. overall a must watch video for those who want to master the butterfly stroke.

Thank you for the slow motions!!!!! Would fins be an idea for mature beginners? (I personally have never had swim lessons, dad taught breast stroke head over water as a kid in a lake, no pool access, never learned front crawl or butterfly. 50+ I discovered my love for swimming thanks to a pool close by and being able to afford membership. Many vids teach me. I cannot afford a teacher. I can swim breast stroke (head under) as my preferred and quite fast stroke now, faster than some freestylers, so butterfly feels more natural to me (front breathing and butterfly derived from breast stroke) than freestyle aka front crawl with side breathing. Am 1.5 years into my swim journey, finally feel strong enough to tackle butterfly. Feeling a bit stupid in an always busy pool to teach myself dolphin kick, but finally works, started under water, now on water level. Butterfly arms are very obvious though and I don't like to draw attention to the life guard as trial and error might look like drowning. Might need to tell them. When I did vertical dolphin or shoot from bottom up out he came running to me.... Now , when I tried one arm butterfly, I seem not to feel the kick well. I took my short fins, it feels better, but unsure if this is good to start out with. Yet it seems to work getting less attention by others or life guards...😂)

What is the purpose of the drills where one arm works in isolation ? Which aspect of the butterfly swimming does this help ?

Part / Whole method. It's easier to get the rhythm and timing with one are vs. both. If you can do it with one arm, try to keep that same rhythm and tempo when going to both arms.
