Kate, I just want to say how much I appreciate you and your encouragement. A year ago, I started my financial peace journey, and today I did a thing: I have a Christmas budget set in place and ready to go; and my first purchase was to myself, a KSquad hoodie. To anyone who feels discouraged, please keep going. Budgeting works and will bring you peace. And hugs to Buns! ❤️

I take pleasure in getting my budget ready. I budget per paycheck which is every 2 weeks but I review it daily and tweak as needed. It's always so nice to see when I have extra money leftover where I have to decide if I should send even more to my fully funded ER fund, more to my mortgage principal, or more to buy Trader Joe flowers 💐 😁

Love this! Also, don't let subscription crap like Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, etc. creep out from "Lifestyle" and sneak into your "Household" category. Streaming services are NOT necessary to sustain life, contrary to popular opinion. Neither are subscription boxes like Ipsy, Birchbox, Barkbox. With the exception of bare minimum generic, possibly second-hand clothing, clothes also belong in "Lifestyle." Decor is always "Lifestyle" because a household runs perfectly well without new decor. If you're honest, anything more than basic makeup is "Lifestyle." Be really strict with yourself about what is or is NOT truly a necessity. The question to get into the category "Household" should be: could I eliminate this expense and still run my household? If the answer is "no" then it's truly a necessity. If you could eliminate that expense and still run your household, then it belongs in "Lifestyle" and should be on the chopping block if you need to balance your budget.

I signed up for this app called Albert...stumbled across it and basically it tracks every thing you spend and categorizes your spending into easy to see broad categories like ‘dining out’ for example. So after a month and a half...I had an idea of where the hell my money was going and that’s so eye opening. ...Then I started the EVeryDollar app better able to know how to categorize all of my spending for the next month ahead. EveryDollar is an app that I use religiously...multiple times a day in fact. I still use Albert too, but now for a place for unlimited sinking fund categories. Not sure if this all makes sense, but it’s taken me until I was 49 to really understand budgeting and now I’m totally confident and would classify myself as a budget ninja. :)

Hi Kate! Absolutely love watching your videos!! I have a question about the 4 categories of budgeting. What if you have home projects that need done or need outbuildings built, etc? Where do you factor in saving for those things? Also, what %'s in each category do you find works best for most people? Thanks so much!!

I wanted to add...I like how you stressed the giving part. I have a strict budget because I have to..we live on a very low income. Fortunately our only debt is our mortgage. My daughter and her husband are struggling financially right now because of things going on in the world. They had my first grandchild July of this year. I have been sending diapers and things on a regular basis and even though it's not bankrupting us..lol, it's making things tighter for my husband and I. You made me feel better about it now though..🤔it's my way of "giving" for now.

I always try to think of a word for the year and have a hard time coming up with one. I saw someone mentioned frugality. That is going to be my word. Every year I start off great, and end the in debt. So sick of it. This year paying off debt, getting life insurance, and making a wills, for me and my spouse. This is always my plan and I never have finished. And the most important, no more new debt. And I need to have sinking funds and a savings as I have none. I am probably going to have to cancel amazon prime. It is my biggest money pit every year. Ugh

Another great video! I think it's really important before you even start budgeting to have a clearly stated "why". My why helps me to remember to be consistent and to not give up. I think it took me 3-4 months of budgeting before it became easy. The biggest game changer for me was tracking my spending (the $ left over after savings and bills).

My budgeting issue is.... I haven't put money in my savings in ages but from time to time have to tap into it when stuff gets tough. But the reason this is, is I have a mortgage and try to put as much money to that as possible and I also like to travel so money goes towards that.

Budget Ninja here. I have a healthy relationship with the money that I earn. I value my money based on how many hours I take to earn it. My cousin asked me for $300.00. I calculated how many hours I would take to earn this money, and I said "NO." He's lazy, so why should I work so many hours just to give him money. I can put that $300.00 in my emergency savings.
