The mind is a powerful thing. It can be used as a tremendous source of good or a tremendous source of destruction in your life. The way you choose to train and use it could, quite literally, be the only thing keeping you from accomplishing your greatest ambitions.
Today, I am joined by former Navy SEAL, ultrarunner, endurance athlete, wildland firefighter, and all-around badass, David Goggins. We talk about staring down adversity, using challenges as the fuel to propel yourself forward, the sacrifices you’ll need to make to be successful, race issues and political correctness in America, and how you can master your mind and defy the odds.
SHOW HIGHLIGHTS
- The value in authenticity
- Maximizing every single minute of every single day
- What makes a man a man
- How to expand your current mental and physical limitations
- What makes the pain worth pushing through
- How to be grateful for your biggest challenges in life
- How to develop pride in yourself
- How to use the lowest part of your life as fuel for progress
- How to overcome anger from past circumstances
- What separates those you choose to be victims and those who don’t
- How to use self-talk to your advantage
- The power of isolation and being with yourself
- The pros and cons of mentorship
- Why you should use an “Accountability Mirror”
- The value in small victories
- How and why you need to focus on “Taking Souls”
- Why we need to have open conversations about race and gender

So frustrating to read the negative book reviews about how much he curses. I just want to scream, "THIS IS WHY YOU WILL NEVER TRANSFORM YOURSELF!" As David has already said, how can he portray how hard this journey was if he had to say everything through a filter?
@Cpatel217
@Cpatel217 5 жыл бұрын
Right? Anybody that complains about the cursing, he's not for you. You need to go find a more 'cleaner' role model then. You either take him for everything he is or not at all. Goggins wouldn't be Goggins otherwise and that's why he is who is and why you click on the link.

I've heard from a few similar people who've had to overcome the darkest times, life is not about chasing happiness. We're here to be useful. I think that's where many of us got lost within the instant comfort we have today, we expect to always be happy. No. Earn some happiness through a lot of suffering and you'll never be depressed again.

I admire the financial independence of people, But you can live better if you work a little more. After watching this I think there are people out there, on the extreme, who plan to die early just to be able to retire early. To each their own but to me, retirement isn't just about not having to work, it's about having the freedom to do whatever you might reasonably want, such as travel, buying things, enjoying life, etc. I don't think I could retire with less than $3m in income-generating investments, maybe $2m at the very minimum. I plan to work until I'm at least 45

1 of the best interviews I have watched with David Goggins David G Order of Man 23rd January 2019. Watched from Monday 13th to 22nd March 2023 To make this useful, I have put headings per key point. Headings include Mindset, Alone, Solitude, Funny, Autopsy, Antifragile Mindset, no cheering squad, alligator skin, taking souls, God and Growth. Square brackets = my own thoughts. War and Peace 02:55 It cannot be 8 hours, 9 to 5, to do this. No. I am in such a fucked up spot in life if I do not dedicate 24 hours a day to make life better, it is not going to happen. I am sorry if u think I am neglecting you but if I don’t fix myself, then I am good for no-one. Go to war with yourself. figure out yourself. Mindset 10:15 I started every race broken 10:48 My mentality was animalistic, barbarian. But this cost me. My body choked itself out. I lost 2 inches of my height. All these leopard spots. As I opened my body up, infection. Worthwhile 13:13 What makes it worth it? [Big Q] 15:10 I will die trying. This reflection in the mirror will change or else I will die trying. It is worth it as I earned the right to feel broken. Every scar, issue, spots, this is a sacrifice to become someone. My life took me on a journey to force me to propel myself to where I am now. And it is worth it Gratitude 16:45 Are you grateful for all this hardship? 17:20 All the stuff up here in my brain is priceless. It is who I am. 17:55 The feeling I have in my mind: it is priceless. I’d do it all over again with a smile on my face [ as he knows it worked out] Alone/Solitude 22:20 for first time in Rocky’s life, he was something. I want this feeling. To get it, I knew to train like rocky but harder. This is real life. Hence i created the real rocky. To be the real version of a movie. But a movie is inspirational. There is no song ‘going the distance’ to keep me going. There are lonely moments in life. 23:20 You find out who you are at your lowest. Hence I developed a new mindset. Lowest point of my life gave me feel bad. Now, lowest part of life gives me strength. 24:12 You want to see when your life ends and mine begins. I kept saying to myself: you always end up in the dungeon. You must find strength in this motherfucker. Funny 24:50 it used to come from having 400 million chips on my shoulder. Autopsy Anger 26:00 cannot sustain you for a long time. I tried. What does it for me 26:55 is I know what we are capable of. Most humans are not willing to go where I am willing to go. 27:20 most people who are blessed with so much will quit before me. They did not have an ability to self-examine. They do not do a live autopsy. When u have a fucked-up life, you are forced to do a live autopsy. You must find strength from hard places. There is preparation in all I do it is despicable, it makes me sick. My personal life makes me sick. Without self-discipline, there is no DG. I had a quitting mind when growing up. When you get beat the stuff out of you, your mind wants to go to a spot where you are comfy. When stuff is easy. Everyday I am fighting where the mind wants to grow. I never arrive [ hence title of his next book: Never Finished] 29:25 Now our mind is so strong our body catches up with the mind!! [very interesting] Antifragile Mindset 33:45 1 thing we don’t do is when we are in a dark place: How can I figure out how this can work for me. When we are in a dark place, this dark place is a great learning environment. There is so much power in my failures, in your suffering. Why? Coz you are still alive. This is power. How many people can do what I do, to say they want to be a NAVY SEAL? I am now going to call a recruiter up. People don’t see it well. There is so much power. Spiritual 36:12 There is too much energy in this world. 40:00 I became that rocky movie and then some. Amount of work I put into myself. 99% of the stuff I did to get to where I am today, I did alone. No cheering squad 41:30 I don’t look at this movie the same way as I don’t have a cheering squad. I am proud of the person I created without an audience, a cheering squad. You know who you are when there is no-one out there when you are running. No-one is cheering you. It is just you alone in your head. I stayed this way for 30 years. Fulfilment 42:30 We are all chasing this feeling. I don’t smile. I am not jovial. Look in his eyes. You see emptiness. What you see of me is real life. People resonate with me as I skip through fluff. I cannot fluff stuff. Life did not present me with fluff. War and Peace 44:10 I need to find peace? No. You need to go to war with yourself. At the end of war, when it ends, then you will know what it is all about. Then you will find your peace. Alone/Solitude 45:00 You are talking on a point lots of people don’t talk about- which is being with yourself. you have been with yourself for 1000’s of hours. People put themselves round others. But they are just distracting themselves. There is value in being alone. 46:10 I am not a role model to you. I telling you what helped me out. Computer Screen 48:00 Are questions being typed now on the computer, to ask David? Funny 50:30 That is my 2 cents. More like 3-cents on it ! Love 51:35 we live in a world where you have to love yourself. But we live in a world where: if it helps me to help you, I will help you. It is selfish love. [wise]. But accountability mirror is where u can’t talk to yourself in a nice way. Call yourself for what you are. But give yourself credit where it is due. Mindset point he has mentioned in many videos 54:15 Most important conversation you have is the one with yourself Atomic habit moment 55:00 If your goal is to lose 106 pounds, be happy losing 1 pound. Even if it is 1 step. Taking Souls 58:40 You use others to get better Blending in 1:06:40 I am the 36th black guy to ever get through seal training. Here I am. I am the only black guy here. Own it. Funny self-publishing 1:08:10 He thought book was only going to sell to black guys. Dumb ass motherfucker. This is your dumb ass mentality. 90% of people who follow me / who bought my book are white. From all walks of life. Alligator skin 1:08:40 DG: If people were to get some alligator skin. OM: Hence you can have the conversations that we need to have. DG: you can go there without being offensive. Solving problems 1:10:10 When people get together to solve puzzles, you must go to ugly places to see what offends you. Without a conver-fucking-sation, there is no fucking knowledge on anything. Who are those people who helped you when DG was at his lowest 1:20:00 Steve Wazowski NAVY SEAL. Scott Garin AIRFORCE PARARESCUE. Only met him for 2 weeks. I stayed with him for 2 weeks. Funny 1:22:10 People, people, everybody! God 1:23:30 He made me sick. I could not push anymore. Hence I had time to look at life. Through reflection, I can find peace. Slow life down enough to respect what you have done for yourself. You must go back and respect the journey. Growth 1:24:30 There is so much growth in going back to school, to get more education. Learning another culture. It is about immersing yourself in things you find uncomfy. It is not about running 100 miles. So many of the hardest challenges in the world are mental. Of trying to be a better person. 1:26:15 The maturing of life. The going-back to fix yourself. Funny 1:28:10 I don’t know karate but I know crazy: James Brown Mindset mind = sword 1:30:10 Sharpen that sword each day. That sword is your mind. Unhappy 1:31:30 People don’t like you. But you are there to make the best decision. Thank you to Order of Man for this wonderful video!

This is my favorite interview because it is shot in a living room, not a studio, or on the road. He was able to share more of himself here than in any other interview. Having gone through something extremely difficult myself, I can see why he can say that he was grateful for the misery he went through. I am so much more powerful now because of the worst hardship I had ever been through which definitely broke me on a spiritual and emotional level. I would do it again even though it was horrific for me only because I know that on the other side is victory.

Ryan- I just found your podcast and channel and subbed. Very impressed. I’ve heard most of Goggins interviews, and somehow you pulled more out of him than any place else. I don’t know if it was because it was his last interview or if y’all just really connected, but it was great to hear some new information. Great question about mentor ship. And I’ve never heard him go so in-depth about racial issues, so good to hear someone like him saying those things. Looking forward to hearing some more of your podcast and interviews. God bless you and your work!

Like he said,, strange feeling came across when Rocky stood back up in the 14th Rd.. when I watched this video I had the same feeling... need to get my lazy azz off my comfort zone and but my self through pain to gain harmony within.. I used to blame everybody but me for my failures, still do sometimes but I'm a better person than I was yesterday... sometimes you got the let the old self die to become your tru self...real talk respect to everyone not giving up even doe we still do dumb shitt..never give up die with a smile on your face...
