The blue crabs do get used to you and can recognize individuals. They can be hand fed and with patience, will allow owners to pet or stroke them. If you have them out of the water and hold them properly, they will allow you to stroke their underneath which sort of puts them in a sleep or state of relaxation. They will come to you during feeding times. The most important thing in keeping these animals for observation and study is to keep their water clean, free of food debris, and salinity levels correct. They are not compatiable with most other fish but will tolerate a low populatiom of silversides, hermit and other crab species as long as food sources remain plentiful.

We used crawfish for bait when I was a teenager. We fished in the Holstein river in Virginia. It was very effective for catching smallmouth bass and “ red eye “ brim. Up to 3 inches long , perfect, any longer not much action. On my 21’st birthday I went fishing on July 17’ with a half bucket of crawfish. I fished until approximately noon with no bites because it was so hot. Before I left I picked out the largest one, about 4 inches long , threw the rest in the river and to much to my surprise caught my one and only birthday present a 5 pound smallmouth bass the largest I ever caught, a monster for that river.
