💜🙏Thank you for sharing your heartfelt reaction to Spring Day..... This information is for you... I want to share with you a comment to another reactor from a survivor of the Sewol disaster.. I would like you to hear from him just how BTS has healed him through this song and the messages they have: His name is Chilo Abellon - and this is his public comment in full - unedited - from 2 years ago.......... "I remembered when they rescuing us its so tragic when you see your classmates/friends stuck asking and hearing them scream for help, the screaming and voices of people asking for help while the ships is sinking the scream slowly vanished. When you can’t help them because the water got deeper and deeper while they rescue us slowly. The time that i got rescued only 3 of us survived, my two classmates and i in our and my other classmates stuck in the ships hoping they’re still alive but when the time i heard the news that they’re all gone. It slowly sinking in that all my friends and the other class are gone and will never comeback. I feel guilty when I survived, I’m thinking am i lucky? Or is it not right that i was alive and not them? Do i deserve to live?. Feeling depressed, having suicidal thoughts, every night you can’t sleep because i keep hearing those scream a scream people needing a help but you can’t because your weak and got broken bones. Everything time I struggled to see what life is all about, thinking what if all of my friends survived and they with me survived. It would be dream to see that happening. I struggled to make a good life that i can be proud of because of that incident happened but when i found out about BTS my life changed me because of their music they changed my life the way that i can be proud of and I started loving myself by little by little and finally the day I realize life is so short and the incident happened 7years ago impacted my life to be a better person and all of our hardships are just a big task for us to make them done and the outcome will be 100times better the incident happened 7years ago thought me so many things. The biggest one is don’t forget they might be gone but don’t forget them put them on your heart and like life all of your hardship and your mistakes will not lose or fail you it’s always a win win situation because we always learn from them. Spring day is my number 1 fav song of BTS because I reminisce the things happened 7years ago while watching the mv and it always help me to keep going in life and do not give up on things that i want to achieve - My name is Chilo one of the survivors of the sewol ferry incident." I truly hope he does not mind me passing on his public comment - but this best shows the power of BTS message. The worst thing about the disaster - the captain and crew fled the ship in the morning 9.35 - the ferry did not sink until the night - they left the warning to "not move and stay still" playing on a loop through the ship. Only the children that disobeyed the warning survived. The others drowned as they were so ingrained to listen to authority. The civilian boats that attempted to rescue people were stopped by the coast guard as people would discover the boat was illegally overloaded. Parents on the shore were receiving desperate calls and texts from their children begging for help. And the coastguard did nothing. The only rescue the coastguard made that day was the captain and crew... The people that got rescued were rescued by fishing vessels that got there first before they were stopped...3 years the ferry lay at the bottom as the Govt would not raise it for fear of discovering the truth.... They found video footage taken on mobile phones that were recovered of children wishing their families goodbye. One of the civilian rescue divers later committed su!cide after having to recover so many childrens bodies knowing that he could have saved them but was forcibly stopped. As a parent I could not comprehend having to live through such a thing. Horrific that your own goverment would perpetrate and then cover up such a incident... jailing dissenters for protesting. It was proven that there were high officials with financial interests in the ferry. The president colluded with them to bury the truth and hamper investigations... 10000 people in the public eye (reporters, artists, etc) put on a Govt blacklist for speaking about it. BTS went and paid respects to the parents of the victims in 2014 when the tragedy occured. No Cameras - No fanfair - just doing what was right...They also donated approx $100,000 (that year they only earnt $300,000 - they gave 1/3 of their earnings) to help the parents in their fight for justice.... We only found out about the donation years later as one of the parents was sick of all the hatred BTS was always getting and wanted others to know what decent and good people they are. The MV, The album cover, The choreography all relate back to the Sewol. But the song itself is about missing anyone you love and are separated from. They have since been singing Spring Day during the panademic as the world is now longing for a spring day. Spring Day has never left the music charts, to this day it is still in the top 100 charts.... 7 years later and this song still speaks to people everywhere. Sorry this is so long - but I really wanted to pass his comment and information to you relating to your Spring Day reaction video.... with posting your reaction you have helped keep the memory of Sewol alive and maybe others who do not know of it will learn of the tragedy. Thank you for sharing your journey, and helping to spread BTS message... Sending greetings and love from Australia.... BORAHAE💜 #WeNeverWalkAlone

I don't recall if it mentions it anywhere, but the reason the students stayed is because of the cultural expectation that elders and authority are important and should be obeyed. I always see a lot of people wondering why the students didn't just leave: this is why. They were told by the authority figure on the boat to stay put, so that's what many of them did. You asked why they would do this, and it's because they didn't want to admit they did something wrong. By taking responsibility, they would have had to admit the illegal things they did surrounding the ferry. They were willing to sacrifice hundreds of children and sweep everything under the rug just to try to save face and keep their power. (There's another documentary separate from anything BTS related that gives even more context, but it's also even harder to watch than this, because it includes footage and recordings from start to finish, even the ones they were able to recover from phones of the passed students. I only suggest watching that if you're in a good mindset and want to learn more.) I already loved BTS by the time I came around to this video and what it meant, but after this, it just really solidified to me just how special they are.

I don't think it was mentioned in the video, but at the time of the disaster, when the ferry had just began to sink, the US Navy offered their assistance, with divers, and underwater demolition experts, to cut through the hull, if necessary. They had the manpower and the room, to rescue everyone. They made the offer multiple times. The former President refused that assistance. The captain of the ferry disguised himself as a civilian, and abandoned ship. This video went into so much detail. Well done!! Your raw reaction is so powerful. The cursing is so relatable, honestly. I get angry all over again, whenever I see something about Sewol. Love you, brother! Love you, ARMY! APOBANGPO! 💜🫰🫶

@@MasterGo89 I agree that self-editing is usually the best option, on a public platform (like this, for example). In some circumstances, though, it's not only proper, but necessary, in order to fully convey the full spectrum of exactly how f[redacted]ed up a situation actually is. In this instance, "gosh darn" and "holy cow" just don't cut it. When one learns how severely mishandled it was, by everyone--leading to the loss of so many young lives, not to mention the cover-up that followed 😭😭😭...yeah, I'd say you expressed the feelings of all of us rather adeptly. This Queen of Songs is heartbreaking, on its own. Combined with the imagery in the mv... It's difficult to watch, even 9 years on. We'll never forget.

It was a hard video to watch but definitely one worth watching. Italian ARMY did such a good job breaking this down! She even went to South Korea to talk to the ones affected and in doing so, make her analysis as good as possible. Now you understand how meaningful this song and MV is for so many people. She is the QUEEN that never left the charts in South Korea. And, now you also understand why the symbolism was so subtle and hard to grasp. It had to be… It’s just one of the countless reasons why BTS is like no other. They always do what’s right, even in unfavorable conditions. Don’t worry about swearing, it’s completely understandable. I’m glad I got to be part of the live! It was so fun!!💜💜 P.S. There is a video on KZbin by The New Yorker called “What Went Wrong in the South Korean Ferry Disaster?”. Before BTS' Spring Day, I watched a document about this horrible ferry disaster on TV. I don't cry easily, but I did when watching it with its real footage. It was just heart-breaking, and I get emotional just thinking about it now. It's just disgusting how a lot of this could've been prevented, people, children didn't have to die. And when I later learned that BTS had an MV about this, although I didn't understand all the symbols, I cried again. Just like they say, we won't forget about this, and BTS has really helped people not to forget. This explanation video really helped me back when I first watched Spring Day's MV to understand all the symbols, and I'm glad you watched this one too. And that's so true about the money, it can do a lot of good, but in the end, money truly is the root of all evil...

Because of how sensitive this issue were, BTS never directly admitted that Spring Day is for the Sewol Tragedy victims but knowing them there is no “coincidence” in everything they do. The Italian Army were thoughtful enough to deep dive into another country/culture & present this important, informative, creative work to their worldwide ARMY family as well as for those who are non-ARMY, like me. This is such a hard watch, and yet I've watched it so many times (on my own and with other reactors) and I bawl every time. As a parent, this is just heartbreaking to see the parents in this and I FEEL the helplessness they are feeling. I just can't imagine how the government let this happen and how these parents must have felt. It's sickening. This sent me down a parallel rabbit hole on watching more documentaries and even video footage that the kids on the ferry were filming from their phones that were later recovered with the ship. It is infuriating that these kids (like many of our own) are taught to respect their elders and listen to authority and because of that they did what they were told and they stayed put waiting for someone to rescue them when nobody was allowed to do so. The ones that survived were ones who pretty much said "fuck it, I'm going, I don't care what they've told us" and all they had to do was get them to the outside deck of the ship and the boats out there were getting them off of the ferry. But the ones that listened and stayed in their rooms inside couldn't be reached. It makes me heart sick.

I think if they would have allowed the U.S.A. military who saw the tilting ship FIRST help... They contacted the Korean coastguard and offered to help since they had 1,000 deep sea diving team Marines on board and rescue helicopters onboard for sea rescue. But the Korean coastguard turned them down and said they had it under control. They were right there, offered to help several times and were politically blocked. They could have flown the rescued kids back and forth to their ship right there. Yeah but no, it's so frustrating

When I first heard the song, and knew nothing of the story I still felt the grief and yearning. Later I watched an explanation and like you was filled with outrage. When ever I even hear the first few notes and Hobi's sensitive voice the tears start to flow. Like you I am a parent and see and hear through the awareness of a parent. It was interesting to see this commentary with you.

To answer your question about why the government didn’t intervene and actively didn’t help and impeded others from helping is because of the government involvement in the ferry crash in the first place. The ferry sunk because it was illegally modified to carry thousands of pounds of more cargo than a ship could legally carry, but it had to have certifications from the government in order to keep in business. Basically the more cargo these ships carry, the more money is being brought in in imports that the government can make money on, so they had to have either actively known about it and were bribed or at the very least turned a blind eye when they should have enforced the regulations and stopped the ferry from being active. With the Sewol tragedy, the more survivors there were to have witnessed how the ship went down and the overloaded cargo on the ship, the more people that could testify against the government and basically expose them in vast numbers. Numbers have power. That’s why they made sure to rescue the corrupt captain and crew who they knew wouldn’t whistleblow, but not the innocent passengers and students. A handful of civilian survivors saying that the ship was overloaded and sank a certain way can easily be swept under the rug, but all 300+ passengers saying the same? They knew it would be the end of them and they wouldn’t be able to deny things easily. It’s absolutely sickening

@@MasterGo89 the shoes get me every time too. It definitely makes my heart heavy to think about how horrifically those students and their families were failed. If you get the chance, I would also suggest watching the Spring Day MV Explained video from bulletproof vibes. It takes a more in depth look at the music video and symbolism shown. It’s just such a beautiful song and such a moving MV. So much thought was put into conveying their outrage and heartbreak and respect for the victims. Luckily the families never stopped fighting for truth and those responsible were brought to Justice. After all, spring day is about loss, but it’s also overlayed with hope. No winter can last forever and one day the cherry blossoms will bloom again. Personal side note but this song touched my heart so deeply I’ll be getting a cherry blossom branch tattoo on one arm in august, because the lyrics “maybe it’s cherry blossoms” never fail to make me tear up (I’m getting an almond blossom branch on the other arm for Amygdala by Suga/Agust D but I have a feeling it’ll be a bit before you get to that trilogy. All I’ll say is get your tissues ready for that MV too)

Coming back to add, the current president (who also awarded BTS their medals of cultural merit and appointed them as ambassadors of Korea) re-opened the investigation to truly get to the bottom of things. I’m not sure if it’s been concluded yet but we do know now that the ship had been illegally modified on the top two decks to carry additional cargo, it was carrying two times the regulation limit of cargo and the crew had opened up the ballasts and drained them (the ballasts are what create weight balance on the ship. Having water in the ballasts makes the ship bottom heavy, so it can balance out any weight from the top decks). They emptied the ballasts so that the ship would “look” like it was floating as normal in case they were stopped by non corrupt officials (had they kept the ballasts full, with the additional weight, the ship would float lower in the water and it would be obvious that they were over the regulated weight limit). Because of the illegal modifications of the top two decks, the fact that they emptied the ballasts and the fact that they were carrying twice the regulated weight, the ship was ridiculously top heavy. This, when the captain tried to turn the ship to avoid a current, the ship tilted, sliding all the weight to that side and then causing it to sink.

Everything is wrong, if you want to know more about just the incident alone, there is a video "What went wrong in the South Korean ferry disaster" by the New Yorker.

I can’t remember if it was the same rescue diver that said this in an interview but one of the rescue divers that aided in the recovery of the bodies afterwards said he literally couldn’t stand being touched or hugged by his wife and his kids for years after because feeling human skin made him feel ill from PTSD and I just…….it breaks my heart knowing it easily could have been a rescue operation instead of the recovery mission it became.

No one saw the imagery in this video at first. Or very few. That's why, of all BTS videos, we recommend an explanation video. There are other ones out there that even go in to more detail. But just know... there is no reason to feel bad you didn't "catch" on at first. Congrats on your first Livestream. I came in at the end, but it seemed to go very well and flowed great. If you want more information about the Sewol Ferry Tragedy, Rotten Mango just uploaded an amazing video on it that contained a lot more information that Italian Army didn’t cover. Her video focused on the event itself. For example, did you know that there was a fully equipped US Navy ship nearby that had over 1000 trained soldiers that offered help? The Korean government turned them away not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES. The first two times was when there were chances of survival. The third time, US told Korea to make it safer for the divers or else anything they do would make things worse. Korea refused. youtu. be/VMs5bTRjjeI

Another commenter mentioned that cultural aspect of listening to your elders in Korean society. This stems directly from Confucianism, an ancient religion from that region that is the major impact of why Korean society is like that today. Filial piety is on of the three major values Confucian taught. The elder is never to be questioned. There was even a major flight that crashed because the younger pilot saw the mistake but because the main pilot was his elder, he was afraid to say anything and everyone died. It's something that is hopefully changing in their culture as it is very toxic, and harmful.

Those in power didn’t want to help because of all the corruption that would come to light. Powerful people were involved in the corruption, and had ownership of the company. They didn’t want to bring the ship up and recover the bodies either, because they knew things would come to light. The normal captain of the ship was so concerned that the ship should not be operating in it’s condition and with all the extra weight before this even happened that he raised a protest and was relieved of duty and they had a substitute crew at the time of the disaster.

The reason why there were false reports and why the Korean government refused international help (specifically the US Marines who were nearby during the time of the sinking) was that they did not want to reveal how ill-prepared their coast guard was in the area where the sinking occurred. It was political. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jH7WZpWKh8-dm6ssi=8Eq1AiUk3VfQmuAm this video did a deep dive research on the whole thing if you still want to learn more. Though, I'm here late so you probably have found this... or moved on from it hehehe. Anyway... Hope your ARMY journey is going well!
