Okay, so this is gonna be a long comment so bear with me! “Blood Sweat & Tears” is the title track of one of their albums called “WINGS” (2016). This particular song and entire album uses a plethora of references that link to one book: “Demian” by german writer Herman Hesse. This book tells the story of a young boy named Emil Sinclair and his childhood growing up during pre-World War I. He struggles to find his new self-knowledge in the immoral world and is caught between good and evil. Already we have some clues as to what this song/MV is about: the battle between good and evil and temptation. The video opens up with the members in a museum; notice how every member have symbols of innocence, such as a bike or slingshot; also each younger member is paired with an older member, their “mentor”, refferencing “Demian”. Jin, the oldest member, stands alone. He is staring at the painting called “The Fall of the Rebel Angels” by Peter Bruegel the Elder. (good angels fighting Lucifer/evil angels fallen from Heaven). He is about to begin his journey towards finding his true self and identity. On the left & right, there is a white and a black door, which represent the paths Jin can go on: the good side and the evil side. Now, If you notice at 2:49, Jungkook is on a swing, and behind him is the painting called “The Lament for Icarus” by Herbert James Draper. Jungkook is representing Icarus troughout the whole video. (V also represents Icarus but in a different form). The swing could represent Icarus being safe, the Icarus following orders (he is supported by a swing, safe from the wrongdoings of the world). Also, notice the lollipop in his hand. This could symbolize either another symbol of innocence, or Icarus’ age as he was a child. Later we see a drop of wax dripping on JK’s finger (4:18). This is a representation of the fall of Icarus and foreshadows what will happen to him later in the video (JK licking the said wax from his finger, a symbol of Icarus’ temptation that would later come in as his downfall, foreshadowed by the painting in the back). At 6:12, V is representing Icarus but also a fallen angel (this scene can also symbolize the fall of Lucifer: he rebelled against God and fell from grace, tempting more angels to do so in the process, thus connecting to the painting at the beginning “The Fall of the Rebel Angels”, maybe this is why he smirks after he falls down the balcony). Behind him we see the painting “Landscape with the Fall of Icarus” by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. This scene represents the death of Icarus (he ignored his father’s warning about flying too close to the sun, until the wax that kept his wings attached to his body melted…and so he fell to his death-again we have the theme of temptation-Icarus falling to temptation. But…at 6:42/7:01 we see Jungkook again, but this time he is floating. He in this scene is dead, and him floating in the air represents how Icarus started “floating” in the water after he fell and drowned, connecting V’s and JK’s scenes. We also see feathers floating in the air and on the floor as well (being underwater). So the whole Icarus imagery in this MV comes in like this: stage 1: We see JK on the swing, Icarus being alive; stage 2: V/Icarus falls off the balcony and into the water; stage 3: The painting in the background (“Landscape with the Fall of Icarus”) foreshadows JK/Icarus when he is floating/drowned (him being dead/underwater); stage 4: the painting behind JK (“The Lament for Icarus”) foreshadows V/Icarus having no wings on anymore which is the final stage (2:49/3:00, 4:18/4:27, 6:12, 6:42/7:01, 8:58). Now, the kissing scene. (BTW, RM is reading a paragraph from “Demian” at 7:37, if you didn’t read the book, you will not get it; also, this scene portrays Jin letting go of the balloon. This can represent letting go of his childhood innocence, his youth and moving into adulthood) During the interlude of the MV, all the members run towards the exit except for Jin and V. If you notice, Jin has a very confused and scared look on his face while V blindfolds him with his hands. After that, a white statue with black wings appears: this statue represents the god Abraxas-the deity is a representation of good and evil. It is not good or evil, it is both (good and evil into the same word). After that, Jin walks closer to it, takes a look at it then kisses it. This scene represents how Jin has finally embraced both good and evil into himself (by kissing Abraxas), thus destroying the world of innocence he has lived in prior to this. We then see V with his wings cut off, giving a smile to the camera (him smiling could symbolize that Jin’s growth is complete, and he finally accepted chaos into himself which leads to self betterment-theory of Carl Jung: accepting your shadow). Again, Icarus but also a fallen angel. So this whole MV is revolving around Jin most of the time, he is the main protagonist of this MV (his path to adulthood, maturity and acceptance of an evil realm). The quote above the mirror at 10:18 is written in German (belonging to philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche) and translates as: “You need to have chaos in yourself in order to give birth to a dancing star” basically meaning that if you don’t accept chaos (evil) into yourself, you will not be able to grow to your full potential. At the end of the MV we see the old version of Jin, the version that was only pure and innocent cracking, there is no chaos in him and so he cannot give birth to the dancing star. Other scenes that further strenghten the overall theme of the MV include 3:27, RM “drinking” the poison/temptation, 5:00, a “Last Supper” kind of setting in which all the members have an apple and a chalice, both signs of temptation; 6:07, again, a blindfold and an apple (forbidden-fruit) and so on. There is so much I didn’t say here, and also keep in mind there is also the BU (Bangtan Universe) consisting of a fictional storyline, this MV is heavy in that matter as well, but you’ll have to watch multiple times and research A TON to trully understand how everything connects because trust me, this whole thing is COHESIVE, I just told you the main things I gathered from this MV but not specifically how everything connects! So many layers to BTS MVs. First it is about growing up and losing your innocence --falling to temptation (beginning with the painting--the Fall of the Rebel Angels-- Jin is looking at with the black and white doorways on either side.) Another of those layers is related to Hermann Hesse's short novel, Damien. It's about 108 pages. The quotes RM reads in the various MVs are from this novel. Reading the novel helps explain images like Yoongi playing the organ, and symbols (like the wings) that appear in the videos. There is still a deeper level; the BU continues through this level as well.

This is a segment of some of the theories you can find on the internet. V, who resembles the devil (that's the reason for the veil that hides his true identity and of course his black, ripped out wings which he lost when he fell from the balcony, the heaven, and became a fallen angel V is also seen as a very powerful negative force, with his mischievous grin and scars on the back where I think his wings are supposedly cut off. He is also seen under a sheet which could mean he is hiding under the shadows and healing. He is the fallen angel from the first painting that Jin focuses on.

You happened to pick two music videos just seeped in symbolism and so many layers of meaning. While essays have been written about Blood Sweat and Tears and all it’s meanings. Idol seems weird trippy but is also stuffed full of meaning even every outfit they wear (it’s a song full of how they respond to things they are criticized for like being too western so the song is a Korean African fusion of music dance outfits). It’s simply brilliant when you get the clues and Easter eggs they layout and live it’s one of the most hype songs that has almost broken the stage at multiple venues (not a joke it shakes stages it’s so vigorous to perform). Boy with Luv is just a joy and also meaningful.

Heh, idol was the very 1st BTS mv I ever saw. They turned up on my late husband's recommended, & since we used to live in Korea during gen 1 of kpop he showed it to me. The 1st time it was way too much for me I was heavily overstimulated, and I wasn't too sure how I felt about it. I couldn't deny that they could sing and dance and rap tho. It kept popping up and I clicked again because a part of me was fascinated. Then their other songs came up, mic drop, blood sweat and tears, fake love, and it was game over. I've since gotten all my kids and some friends into them. 💜 but idol was a crazy mv for my 1st, it's not what I'd choose to show someone 1st because it's a lot to take in. I know you said for bst no dkdk, but their explanation of idol is good because they explain all the Korean symbolism that's in this

There's a lot going in each MV. The discography of BTS is meaningful, because through their albums, they share their growth, thoughts, and history, their own journey in life. But, using books, thinkers, art, poetry, psychiatrist concepts, they transcended their personal storylife and struggles and made them universal, relatable for everybody, sharing powerful social or/and personal messages. In my opinion, that's why they are top artists , it goes far beyond the music, they touched people's heart and give them hope. Blood Sweet and tears take part of the Wings album/era, deeply based on a book : Demian, by Herman Hesse. It's about temptation, loosing innocence... recognize and embrace you dark side in order to grow, and extend your wings. The MV is full of symbols, it can be overwhelming so I won't dive in it now, you can chek some explanation video later. But to summarize : Emil Sinclair is the protagonist of the novel. Sinclair is confused as to what his life is, and is going to be, and constantly seeks mentorship throughout the novel. He tends to need validation by an older figure, and finds mentors in figures such as Pistorius, Demian, and Eva. Pistorius is an organist (aka Suga in the MV) ; Demian is a childhood friend and a mentor of Sinclair. Demian leads Sinclair to his eventual self-realization, and may be considered Emil's daemon. (probably V , as a falling angel, in the MV) . One of the major themes is the existence of opposing forces and the idea that both are necessary. It's about the growth, the loss of innocence , the temptations, and stop covering your eyes to discover the reality and the world as it is. (and yourself ) Demian is replete with both Jungian archetypes and Jungian symbolism (that BTS used for their Map of the soul era too) . The statue with black wings that Jin kiss is the God Abraxas : The Gnostic deity Abraxas is used as a symbol idealizing the interdependence of all that is good and evil in the world. Demian argues that Jehovah, the Jewish God, is only one face of God; it rules over all that is wholesome, but there is another half of the world, and an infinite god must encompass both sides of this world. All the purpose of the song is : you have to embrace your dark side to fully became yourself. "One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star., this is the quote you see in german above the mirror, from Nietzche.

Before watching or while watching, be sure to read the lyrics, where there are a lot of quotes, allusions, metaphors from world religions, teachings, philosophy, and literature. This song is about fallen angels, to which artists have been attributed since ancient times. The kiss of Jin with Lucifer means the ritual of the fall of the actor.

Idol is worth a DKDKTV explanation. They focus onbthe many cultural references. I just want to point out something in relation to your comment about more more more/money money money in BST. In Idol, when there is a rabbit in the moon, the guys are singing talking talking talking. How they are pronouncing it, it is the Korean word for rabbit (토끼 to-kki). In Korea, it is a rabbit with a mortar and pestle in moon.

The Idol MV was my first MV when I got to know Bangtan 4 years ago, even though the first song I heard was Fake Love about 5 years ago without knowing who BTS was🤧 and only found out 1 year later after one of my friends introduced me to Bangtan through a live performance of the song gogo🥺. I recognized some of the paintings and understood that this song was about a battle between good and evil, but that was about all at first. The lyrics, the tone of their voices, the paintings, the stage sets, and the statues all have so much symbolism. To understand their meaning I had to rely on ARMYs comments and the explanation on Tumblr, which I read several times. It is intense and interesting and one of my favorite MVs. Idol is so much fun. I really enjoyed our reaction.

The boys came for him hard in Blood, Sweat & Tears. 🤣 Don’t worry, the Jimin Effect got Halsey too lol. There’s a behind the scene somewhere for that video, and she was supposed to look Jimin in the face during part of the dance but couldn’t. 😂 He kept saying, “Look at me!” And she kept giggling and getting shy. I get it. If I ever had the pleasure I’d probably just fall out. That man is too beautiful to be real.

"Blood, Sweat, and Tears" Yes. It requires a "Deep Dive". I did not get it on the first viewing. I had to checkout the explanation video. Even if you don't...you recognized this as a Magnificent Masterpiece. It is a work of art. It's basically about facing temptation. It's beautiful. It's breathtaking. Well, labeling them a Boy Band just doesn't work. Does it? Without a doubt, it's overwhelming. Read the comments. Take a breath. Watch it again. When you are ready. You've experienced the greatness and talent of BTS. No other group in the world can do this. The live performance with all choreography is chilling! Watch that too.

That’s how I heard it too. BTS and bighit would always go to extreme lengths to create elaborate music videos using real, practical effects. Of course, lazy, unobservant critics thought it was all green screen, and laid on the criticism. So in response… BTS made a video with RIDICULOUS amounts of green screen as a “fuck you” to the haters, lol

If you've never read the book Demian or read Carl Jung you won't understand a lot that's going on here unless you read synopsis of Demian and Carl Jung. Demian: The Story of Emil Sinclair's Youth is a bildungsroman by Hermann Hesse, first published in 1919; a prologue was added in 1960. Carl Gustav Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded analytical psychology. He delves into the psyche of the persona, the ego and the shadow which are common themes on much of BTS's music. There is a lot to unpack in IDOL as well and DKDKTV is the best for that in the IDOL explained video.

“This is my fave music video so far” - I absolutely LOVE idol!! And yes it’s a blast during concerts! You absolutely HAVE to watch Idol Dance Practice to even appreciate how hard and complex their choreography is! Lol!) You can’t even see some of their faces because they are wearing hats covering their faces, but oh my gosh my bias managed to pull me right in through his dance moves! And then I noticed one member dancing in tight jeans and black shoes and just KILLING IT and I’m like “HOW is he doing that!!” 😲 I love the many transitions to highlight WHO is singing/rapping. I don’t know how they can sing and dance this ridiculous choreo at the same time, but that’s BTS for you!! I love the jumps and synchronized high kicks. Just WOW! Also, when Jhope says “superhero” make sure to pause and appreciate how each member is posing as a Marvel superhero and take a guess which superhero each one is. There’s Ironman, Thor, Black Panther, etc. So fun! Love this little Easter egg they put in there. You have to react to Idol dance practice video, as well as Run BTS dance practice from 2022). I heard you take a big sigh after watching it. Yes. This is intense in its own way too. Meaning. You can call them the traditional idol or label them anything else. But they are just BTS. They obviously don't fit into any category. They are all over the page...uncontained. They are colorful and everything in this video. It represents who they are. Anything and everything. It's full of cultural references because that's who they are too. So many references you do have to watch an explanation video. They are saying to the world, the haters, the labelers, the bullies...you can call us anything you want. We don't care. We love ourselves just the way we are. Blood Sweat and Tears is full of symbolism. The album, “Wings”, is about loss of innocence/temptation. Idol is also full of symbols against criticism like RM using filters and V’s shirt. BS&T & Idol have explanation videos if you’re curious. Idol & Boy with Luv both have an alternate video containing b roll & outtakes. The Idol vid has Nicki Minaj and a dance challenge. Sometimes, fans have a lot of fun posting fashion for them in social media & if lucky, their team makes it into reality. p.s. They don't stick to specific fashion brands. Just recently though the members have become global ambassadors for the biggest fashion houses & brands like Dior, Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Tiffany, Celine Calvin Klein & even the NBA

Hi!! There is already a lot of explanations in comments but i didn’t saw comment about Boy with luv. As u can see, there is not much lines that Halsey have. It’s because they are using this version for concerts, so there won’t be big gape between lines of Halsey and others, so they use this as official. BUT there is also another version - Army with luv, where Halsey have more lines, it also have a little bit different scenes in mv💜 so if u wanna see u can check, thank you💜💜💜

"Boy in Love". They performed it Live with Halsey at the Billboards. It was a big deal. It was their first time attending an award show. Their first time performing on an awards show. They fell in love with Halsey and vice versa. At their TV rehearsal for the Billboards she gave each of them a gift. She had them created and made just for them. Pink crystal stones made into a friendship bracelet. They gave her a pink covered present. Their new album all signed. They still stay in touch with her. In Suga's documentary he visits her house in California. And brings a gift for her new baby. A fun thing. Halsey styles Suga's hair just like hers. It's such a fun cute moment. Back to their performance. They were so scared. Shaking. They had never performed in front of other music stars before. They had never been so scared of performing before. Guess how they did??? Army attended and were in the balcony. They screamed and screamed their delight at their performance. They felt great then!

Idol speaks about topics of being an idol and represent the Korean culture (MAMAS 2018/19) BTS members in fact, some times was saying that Halsey is their girl, and we are so in love with this amazing girl is super talented and in some occasions she defends to the guys.
