Mastering Darktable: Mask Export to Gimp or Photoshop
How to export masks/paths created in Darktable, for use in Gimp, Photoshop and other software (I guess!).
Making a complex path selection in Darktable takes time and effort. If you need to carry out further work on the shot in the likes of Gimp, Photoshop etc - it might be useful to be able to use that same mask in there too, and NOT have to make it again from scratch!

You CAN export parametrics from Darktable under the XCF file format, but that file format is unique to GIMP. Open the XCF in GIMP, the masks will be under the CHANNELS. If you want to go to EXPORT, and choose .psd as the export file format, the resultant PSD file will open in Photoshop, and all masks INCLUDING PARAMETRICS, will be under the channels panel in Photoshop

That would be a good feature. To lock the selection because it's easy to mess them up.

Hi Andy. Thanks for a very useful video. I created a purely parametric mask with no drawn mask and then used another module in dt and used the raster mask on that. Then I exported and opened the image in Gimp and it had created the masks on two separate layers.

You can do all that in GIMP and or Krita.without the need for a mac with photoshop

What if you save as .psd in GIMP, does layers appear in Photoshop?

'Save As" in GIMP doesn't work, but 'EXPORT" does.

I've no idea how to use Darktable as its not a program I've ever used but wouldn't Darktable produce an .XMP file containing any masks which were created? If you clicked on both the exported file and its associated.XMP and opened them both in photoshop, would that not carry the mask over?

No, Adobe xmp is not the same as DT xmp, and any parametrics for DT would be uninterpretable by Adobe, as the parametrics are different.

If you save in .xcf with store masks in yes, when you open the file in GIMP, the masks doesn't show up, basically, it doesn't work.

Oh yes is does - open in Gimp, and check under CHANNELS - all masks present.
