In this video I feature a putting lesson where I pass on the Bob Rotella method for putting which is all about not letting your brain get in the way and focusing on the smallest most minute target.
It sounds like hocus pocus till you try it.
I have found it to be particularly good for distance control on long putts and long putting.
I have been a low handicap golfer for over 30years.
Re energised after turning 50 for seniors golf.

I no longer use a line on the ball or anything for that matter. When I did I was always saying, "well that's not EXACTLY on line but...". Now I concentrate on where I really want to hit the ball much better. The line was a distraction all this time.

I go through different stages of using the line and not, whatever feels right at the time Bill

Agreed. Your peripheral vision is fighting a line on a ball, leading to pulled putts.

Great putt! I'll have to read Rotella's again, it's been a couple of years. Thanks.

Good video. Will definately be subscribing to your channel. I’m 52 this year, and yes, I’ve got a different mind set from when I was in my early 20’s. I use the same method of looking at a marker on the green as a guide, for the line of putt, but something approx 3 feet away during set up works for me, as it’s a close target. Look forward to seeing many more interesting videos. Oh, and great putt BTW. 👍

That book really helped me with my putting too, that and a new grip. Now I putt best when I don't hang about, I try to see and feel the putt before getting to the ball, in my mind I see the putt and how far it should go. Then address the ball, look at the target, look and the ball, let the putt go, no hesitation. It's turned me from a poor putter into an acceptable putter with almost no practice, just a change in mind set.

I believe I read that tip in a book from Lee Trevino back in the late 70s. If memory servers me correctly the book was named Drive for Show and Putt for Dough.

Once again thanks very much for the video and the advice , i believe that the audio book is available here on youtube ? so ill be giving that a bash over the weekend , also while ive got you maybe you or one of your viewers can help me with some golf instruction that really hit the nail with me some 30 years ago but for the life of me i can not track it down now , all i can remember about it was that it was written by the Swedish international tennis coach ( yeah crazy , tennis to golf ) at least i think he was Swedish , if not then one of the Scandinavian countries anyway ? ... maybe someone out there can go. " oh yeah , i know that book " , and pass on the title to me , many thanks in advance if so 🙂

Appreciate your videos. Easy to apply and they make sense related to freeing you up. As opposed to staring at the ball before applying the stroke, have you ever experimented with looking at a spot right in front of the ball that’s on your intended line? I’ve just recently started practicing this as it seems to free me up from the (hitting) of the stroke and allows me to visualize it more as I’m now rolling it over the beginning of the intended line! Appreciate your thoughts! Thanks

Sounds great John, like you say if that process works for you and frees up your putting stroke then go with it and stick with it 👍 Thanks for the comment and support of the channel

Great video...how far away is your target? I'm not sure if I should be picking a target a few feet ahead of my ball, half way to the hole, or close to the hole. Thank you!
@ScratchAt50
@ScratchAt50 3 ай бұрын
Cheers Gerald. I pick a target round the hole so if I read it 2 cups of break outside the right and im uphill my target is 2 cups outside the right and past the hole. If its a downhill putt my target is 2 cups outside the hole and short of the hole. That doesnt mean that is the bible, its whatever works for you but you have to totally trust it and just swing the putter.
@kmsnow6292
@kmsnow6292 8 ай бұрын
Sounds just psychological, but if you try to find a mark next to the hole then why not just focus on the hole itself? There may not be a mark near the hole on every hole but you can guarantee the cup is there on every green.
@ScratchAt50
@ScratchAt50 8 ай бұрын
In this case my target for the break is the target right of the hole. If it's a foot of left to right break then I look for a target along that line a foot outside the left If it's a straight put then my target is the hole. Ultimately work out what the best target is that works for you 👍

Probably a lot of truth in this. Once I've hit a putt, I almost always know whether I've hit it long, short. But when I actually hit it, I didn't translate that to my actual stroke.
