When you can simplify the complicated, you know what you're talking about. This guy is the real deal. Cares about expressing what needs to be explained in order to unlock music. Such an unselfish teacher. You Rock Brett. I have being playing guitar 40 years and it continues to amaze me that everything goes back to basics and there is always a little more juice to be squeezed out of basic principles. You explain it so well and it shows that you actually want people to understand, advance and learn. You're my favorite guitar teacher because you share the secrets readily. This guy is a fantastic teacher folks.

A guitarist has a toolkit, or ways of seeing the fretboard. I can see now how chords, or triads of chords, lead you to the notes you need. But scales are the connecting tissue as it were. Funny how you describe modes, because I have been looking at them recently myself. Start and finish on root note in the mode, gives you a modal sound particular to the one you are playing.

Is your visual foundation the E major pentatonic in the 5 shapes. But targetting the chord tones as they move. Or are you visualising the other pentatonics ie F# minor and A major. Nice lesson bye the way
@metalfuryskulls
@metalfuryskulls 3 жыл бұрын
Hiya, I've asked this question before and you can do either. I think for this lesson Brett is focussing on the 5 shapes of E major and then adding the extra notes. For me it sometimes helps to think of the pentatonic pattern of the new chord shape and change with the chord changes. That then means you don't need to think about 'extra notes'. For example on this sequence I might play pattern 2 and 3 around E shape chords, pattern 1 around Em shape chords and pattern 5 and pattern 1 around A shape chords. I've not decided yet if this system creates more 'head work' or not, so am experimenting with both. I think the long term answer will to be to do both, especially if you have little licks based on the relative pentatonic/chord shapes.
@lawrencedeans1433
@lawrencedeans1433 3 жыл бұрын
@@metalfuryskulls hi thanks for the reply. I've been trying to link the major scale with each of the caged chord shapes and this lesson is kinda similar to where I'm at. Yes your probably right both ways would be beneficial but you need to learn one method at a time.
@metalfuryskulls
@metalfuryskulls 3 жыл бұрын
@@lawrencedeans1433 Yup, I've been doing the same approach. I have a pentatonic pattern linked to each Major and relative minor chord shape that I've memorized. I then jump patterns within the same area of the neck depending on the chord being played using CAGED.
@lawrencedeans1433
@lawrencedeans1433 3 жыл бұрын
@@metalfuryskulls it's is the way to go I think, but takes time. what's lacking on youtube are practice excercises for this stuff. it's all very well being aware of the ideas however how do you practise it. Are you aware of any excercises or practice routines to help glue it to the brain lol
@metalfuryskulls
@metalfuryskulls 3 жыл бұрын
@@lawrencedeans1433 Check out Brett's other lessons - particularly the Hendrix ones and anything where he references chord tone solos. Personally, I've memorised that the following chord shapes sit in the following patterns: G maj & E min - Pattern 1 E maj & D min - Pattern 2 D maj & C min - Pattern 3 C maj & A min - Pattern 4 A maj & G min - Pattern 5 If you look at the list you should see: • The patterns go 1 to 5 • The relative minor is always the next letter in CAGED • The relative minor shape sits in the same area as the major and uses almost the same notes • Going down the list (maj or minor) is always the next letter in CAGED That helps me to remember everything. As an exercise, I play simple chord progressions and then run the scale pattern for each chord shape and try to hit the chord notes. This is the same as Brett's done here, but instead of using a single key for the scale (Em) and adding extra notes, I think of the patterns for each chord shape. The end result is exactly the same, just a different approach mentally. I've no idea which is the best approach from these 2 methods, so I practice both and mix them up.
@fskj8339
@fskj8339 3 жыл бұрын
Very nice method of explanation.. the way u explain/teach the chord shifting to a different place on the fretboard, holding E maj chord in a D shape. And on that account I'd like to know if we can hold E in a C shape, as holding in D shape is rather difficult. My querry is are those(E maj in D shape and C shape) same?? Or are those different?? Can we use C shape instead of D shape, completely replacing it??
@BrettPapa
@BrettPapa 3 жыл бұрын
They share some of the same notes. Using the C shape is probably more practical and what you will encounter most in solos.
