Rob Brown how would I apply these strokes and licks around the kit. I have been playing drums for awhile and I have gotten good but I kno I can get even better. My problem is applying the strokes around the toms and kick especially my doubles. I have control but not as well as I know I should and without that my speed is lacking so how can apply around the kit?. Also how can I get that very nice tempo watch you have? Well said. I heard a song where the drummer was doing a two beat (double time) at 150 (300) beats per minute. He is doing this for at least 5 minutes with ease. I go straight to Rob for advice on speeding up my singles strokes. Thanks Rob.

I agree with you. Only, I started with rudiments when first started to play when I was about 13, now 53 and I REALLY wish I would've stuck practicing my rudiments because I would be really really good with them by now!! I still enjoyed playing but I can see where I would be much better had I kept up practice with the rudiments! Especially now that I have to play EVERYTHING with just my hands due to a serious motorcycle accident in 1991 that left me paralyzed from the armpits down!! I never gave up the drums though since I love playing so much! It was pretty rough at first trying to figure out how to play all the different beats and and other things that you're used to playing with four limbs and now you have to pay them with only two. Simple beats were easy but when you get into the more complex beats etc, and things like triplets and quadruplets getting them to sound the same using two limbs opposed to using four limbs that's where it got a lot more complicated!! It was almost like starting all over again. Also of course I had to switch to some electric gear so I could program a bass drum up where I could hit it with my hands etc. There's more of course but this comment is too long already and I think you get the idea. Hey Rob. I just want to tell you i have been playing drums since 5 years old. Im now 44. I have always hated rudimentary practice and my left hand is weak. For the last few weeks i made myself start practicing rudiments to make myself better. I string together your single, double, paradiddle and six stroke role videos in each practice and i can now play things i never could before all thanks to you. Even playing in bands i never felt good at the drums and with this practice i now do i feel like im the best i have ever been. Your lessons make practicing fun. I’m old. I mean older. My first drum teacher was D.Garibaldi. I was too young and lazy to appreciate the rudiments he was teaching me. Good thing my cousin took an interest and eventually joined Tower of Power. A good story. I just set up my ’67 Ludwig Hollywood, champagne sparkle set and started practicing again, at 71 yrs. old. Scouring beginning drum videos. I can hear the funk in what Mr. Brown is teaching. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to play it. He’s got the funk!

Rob since I've found your channel my approach to playing has hit the sky. The whole deal mate! From posture to stickings, to developing dynamics, to even tempo, to even volume, etc etc etc. I've played the same set of drums I got when I was a kid and I've used them through the years in dance bands, to covers bands BUT I've never attempted to play with consistent discipline. At the tender age of fifty, I'm rediscovering my playing and finally I'm focused on all of these things you demonstrate across your videos. I'm starting small. At the moment I've got sticks and a couple of cushions and now that I've got everything nice and comfortable I am practicing my rudiments in front of the screen. I'm not joking when I say that by following you I have advanced in a few months what I haven't been able to achieve in three decades! Thanks mate and keep the mojo coming :-)

I recognize this is an older video, but I still have my bit to add. I've been a guitar player of nearly 18 or 19years ( started so young I didn't really have a great focus till much later lol ) but, my dad has always been a very level headed accomplished drummer. So I grew up just having fun making noise on a set. But this year he surprised me with a nice vintage kit that I really like. Iv been exclusively practicing these excorsices and developing my double stroke roll on the pad. This showed me that I can't follow a tempo without accenting notes. The second pattern (accent on the e) is one of the most difficult things I had to do in a while. Also, counting out loud the 1-2-3-4 is so hard it's making me sweat!! Cool stuff! Rob, I like your channel! Thank you for being here for the world! Also I'd like to share with all who reads this comment section... Add to these two more patterns. 1 - "one e AND a two e AND a three e AND a four e AND a". 2 - "one e and A two e and A three e and A four e and A" (big letters for the accents). And over this you can play eighth singles with your feet like regular RLRL. I use this as a warmup every single time. Then when you feel comfortable with it just move your accents around the kit. If you're a beginner you'll get your first drum solo by the end of the month. (Don't know if there is a video on this here. I've just subscribed))))

Ayo, Mr. Brown, just wanted to say how much I appreciate this channel! I’m a jazz guitarist of several years now, but have always had an interest in drums and started playing a bit in the past year and sat in for the drummer in my small jazz group. Never played a rudiment in my life and had no clue about proper technique. I decided to remedy that and start getting serious about percussion. Happened upon this channel and firstly, I’ve learned SO MUCH in just the last week. Secondly, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen something like “I’ve been playing 20 years and you just fixed such and such problem for me!” Really gives me the confidence that I’m starting from basically ground zero getting all the right information! Hi Rob. I'm 70 yo and have a lot of unlearning to do. Been playing drums since the 60s. Thanks for insights on single stroke roll Rob. I've got fairly good rudiment speed on some of the rudiments. Paradiddle speed 205 bpm, Paradiddle-diddle around 180-190+ on a good day but my single stroke speed AND control like you said has alway suffered. Hope to improve that with your insights you've shared. Thank you

2 minutes in and had to subscribe. You got some crazy groove brother! Definitely looking forward to developing my singles. I leaned the push pull technique and immediately got my double strokes down, but felt I'm skipping a step. Thank you for your amazing advice. You're the man!
