Thanks Rob. Great lesson. I started drumming with matched grip and after a few years I switched to traditional since I felt more comfortable with it (especially when playing ghost notes). Thanks Rob. I liked the groove you were playing in the beginning and thought I would try it. Seemed easy. This was like learning syncopation for the feet. I failed pretty miserably with the kick drum for about 1/2 hour until I was able to count it out. I am 59 and just getting back into drumming. This will be the basis of many exercises for me. Thanks for doing what you are doing. I dig your style and your gear too!

I had drum lessons when I was a little kid and my teacher wanted me to play matched grip as the new thing (yeah Im old). But i kept switching back to traditional. At one point he told me if I don't stop switching back he's just gonna have me play traditional and i never looked back. I struggle to play match grip but I still want to have that too and keep working on it. Both is best. Thank you, another great lesson.

this is incredible, i have been playing matched for the past 5 years and still don't have incredible speed or accuracy. getting back to basics with things like this really helps with my internal metronome and accuracy. i dont really have a strong opinion of whether match or trad is better, but i will say that trad definitely does look cooler ;)

Thanks Rob! I'm 60 years old and I finally figured out how much technique I need to play what I hear. I have decided to start digging in. This lesson helps a bunch. Although traditional left is more limited, the sound from that grip is a deep part of the catalog of traditional drumming. With this grip it's hard to get the same velocity and it always seems to sound a bit softer, but there's a very special sound that you can't get from match grip. I'm going to take my fingers off the stick for a while and just work on the cradle. Seems simple enough.

Very good video. Another way to practice single stroke is playing Bolero de Ravel along any video with dynamics, from ppp to ff, playing the rythm of the snare with both hands simultaneously or alternating them. Is a very good exercise to improve your technique. After finishing, you wll realize to have better precision and control of the sticks.

So back to basics hu; Always man, always. A musician always go's back to basics. Great video. Just Playing is still the best way to show things. Let the music do the talking and explaining by itself.....You ar a ba ass modest master in your own way , becaus you always keep doing it man.

So true. Been playing Keyboards for over 30 years, but just got into drums a couple years back. Always warm up on the keyboard with scales at slow tempos to a click. Gradually build up the speed to comfort, then before a gig, push up the tempo a little bit over comfort to loosen up the joints. Basic beginner technique will always treat you right and NEVER steer you wrong no matter the instrument. Learning traditional grip from Rob's videos really helps a lot. Always look forward to a lesson when his alerts pop up on my computer :-).

Having trouble with stick sliding off w/o thumb to hold it. Could you show the open movement while looking into your palm. I learned a lot from watching your hands over the years. Right hand has become loose and accurate. Looking to loosen traditional left hand.

the problem of trad grip is when you make tom fills/rolls. the tendancy to hit heads at a bad angle. which breaks them quickly. Virgil Donaty is the perfect example. i remember Tomas Lang was amazed at how fast Virgil was killing his drum heads. especially on floor toms. Virgil is a floor tom stabber haha! the rack toms were okayish. only 2 hours of bootcamp. crazy.

it really depends on the position of the toms.. the trad grip is better on the snare angled down for example..

Hey Rob! Thanks for the video. I am reading Anatomy of Drumming book (highly recommend to read this book to any drummer) by John Lamb and he said that playing traditional grip is designed to play a slanted drum. Well I like to play traditional grip with snare drum set not in angle, but what John write in the book (it is so true and I can see also in your and my posture) is that if your snare is not in the angle we use to slouch and drop our left shoulder so we can play the drum at the appropriate angle, and it can create problem such as Thoraric outlet syndrome. Well I tried to set my snare little bit in an angle and it change a lot for me in. I am feeling much more comfortable and it is also more comfortable to hit a rim shot with more power. What is your opinion about having snare drum set up in angle? Did you ever tried to play snare drum with traditional grip in angle? Thanks Love your merchandise Sam
