The English learning stituation goes the same here in mainland China. I would too like to take test of toefl or ielts when I feel like I am going to get good scores. Every now and then I'm struggled whether should I study for the test or for my personal interest. And I was never a fan of test but I enjoy learning English everyday. Thank you Steve for introducing so many aspects of language learning to us and the helpful advice. Greetings from China!

Even though he seemed to be struggling quite a bit (still better than me in my target languages,) you did an excellent job as an interviewer at not making him feel bad about it. Even slight hints of judgement can be very demotivating for one's learning journey.

No he wasn't struggling at all, as far as I could see. It was a great, relaxed interview, with no struggling on either side, all very natural and fluent. Tetsuya's English is Amazing! He expresses himself better than some natives, no kidding! I'm impressed! Well done to both! Amazing polyglots!

This seems to be an Asianwide phenomenon. The mainland Chinese love to nitpick and criticize when they hear other Han Chinese speak English with slight errors or what they consider a "bad' accent even when doing so, they use their own Chinglish. Parallelly, I heard from many polyglot Koreans who said that learning Japanese was relatively easy, especially when they were already familiar with Hanzha

A high score on TOEIC can be a life changer in Japan. That can be a big plus when we want a good job. The last part was so encouraging! Speaking in English, especially in front of other Japanese people, often makes me hesitate as I know they will judge my English :( Great video! It was so inspiring 😊
Tenerife Horse Rescue estate, Arico, Tenerife, Spain, Africa. Great interview, gentlemen! I would love to hear further details of how Tetsuya learned to speak those languages so well, maybe one full interview for each language journey, yeah? His level of English is impressive! The smidgen of French he gave also sounded just right. If he ever wants to learn Irish Gaelic or Canarian Whistling, or Spanish, hit me up. 😋 This guy may soon be the Steve Kaufmann of Japan! 🌹🌹 RESPECT! Best wishes, Patrick. 🍀

I’ve taken TOEIC tests and got full marks on listening, reading, speaking, and writing, but I’ve never prepared for the tests. I just enjoy reading paperbacks or newspapers, and use English as a tool. TOEIC motivates some learners, but the research I did shows that testing may undermine learners’ motivation. Motivation is a key factor to keep learning. There should be things such as enjoying stories or interacting with others in English that motivate learners. This video is interesting. Thank you.

Totally agree. TOEIC in Japan is a business only indirectly related to learning English.
@Couch-Tomato2 жыл бұрын
TOEIC is just business. It cost maybe about 100 dollars per one test. Too expensive.

You MIGHT have 250,000 hours of reading and listening to your native language over the course of a lifetime. "Millions and millions of hours," come on LOL. Yes, I realize it was just an expression, but I thought it was humorous.
@Thelinguist2 жыл бұрын
I think I was confusing the millions of words with hours. Now i will have to try to calculate how many hours I have heard English. Let's say it is in the hundreds of thousands.
