FatherreeFishing Up until I first started fishing bass this year I thought Hot days and Rainy days were bad days to fish. Boy was I wrong...you know that old saying "It's all on how you wiggle the worm". If you have a bad presentation on a good fishing day, you probably won't catch much. You and a few others taught me a lot about plastic bait. So thanks again.

I have been trying to get a frog to work all summer, I just can't seem to get it right. It is one of only two baits I own and work with a lot that I still have never caught a fish on, not sure what I am doing wrong but I own 5 frogs and just took all but one out of my tackle and put them into my unused gear box, perhaps some day I will make one work and have enough confidence in them to devote space in my box for top water lures, I would love to experience that type of strike.

can i tie my braid straight onto the hook or should i use a short leader of mono or flouro?
@FatherreeFishing
@FatherreeFishing 9 жыл бұрын
+Ryan Bradfield You can tie the braid straight to the frogs line tie, if you are in ultra clear water it may not hurt to connect a 10 ft leader of 20 lb mono so that the bass cannot see the braided line. I like to use a triple surgeons knot for connecting braid to another type of line.

What other baits you use for heavy pads in summer? Seems like spinnerbaits and rattletraps just get caught up in a thick sludge of moss for me, or stuck in the pads. Frogs are about the only thing that seems to work. Poppers haven't worked very well for me either, the hooks get caught on the pads too.

Flipping soft plastic craws, creature baits, and tubes with pegged 1/2-1 oz bullet weights through thick pads sometimes works well.

+Kilroy44 None Thanks for the comment, braid is a great line choice for frog fishing as well! I find myself using mono often as I can use the same rod/reel with 20lb mono for a frog then use the same rod/reel combo for a carolina rig, flipping, or fishing moving baits like chatterbaits and swimbaits.

mono stretches and dose not allow for a good hook set, also if the fish gets in some thick cover that mono is gonna snap (personal experience)
@FatherreeFishing
@FatherreeFishing 10 жыл бұрын
Mono line isn't a great choice for everyone, you have to use a stiffer fishing rod and have a better hookset than when using braid. I really use braid when fishing with kids since it has no stretch and they can set the hook much easier with lighter and softer action rods.

+charley drumm Sorry to hear you can't get out onto the water! I should be done with my hip surgery recovery and physical therapy in the next few months and be guiding again full time in 2016! I recommend mid February to mid March or May to mid June for the best fishing experience on Lake Fork. During February-March we are primarily fishing shallow water with jigs, crankbaits, and senkos while during May-June we are fishing in deeper water and targeting large schooling bass that will usually bite on a very wide variety of baits.

I know this guy didn't just say to use mono for it's floating property over carbon are he serious any angler worth his grit know to use carbon which do not water lodge over mono which soak up water and sink fast where he got that from he need to redo this video I use a braid backing with at least a 15lb carbon lead it's depends on how thick the pads or grass is
@FatherreeFishing
@FatherreeFishing 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not quite sure what "water lodge" means but monofilament line will float while fluorocarbon line sinks my friend. Mono and braid are the absolute best line choices for fishing a frog in pad cover. When you retrieve a frog over pads it is best to keep your rod tip pointed upwards to avoid your line being caught underneath the lily pads between you and your bait. If you retrieve a topwater frog with your rod tip downward, like you should do when fishing a jerkbait or a walking style topwater lure, your fishing line will get underneath pads that are between you and your frog making it harder to get a solid hookset and pressure after a bass strikes your topwater frog. I hope this helps, good luck fishing!
