I have only just found your channel and am learning so much from it, I am going to try this technique soon. There are heaps of lily pads near my bass spot that I have never fished thinking I would only snag in all the lilypads constantly. You make it look so simple (I am sure its not)

Interesting question. In my "Frog Blowups" video I have footage of a bass hitting a frog that is sitting ON TOP of a lily pad. Fish was practically banging its head on the pad. So, they can still key in on these baits even when they aren't technically in the water. With that being said, you'll still need to find some kind of opening (even if it's tiny) to ensure a hookup.

I use a 7' Abu Garcia rod and a Shimano open face, with 50lb braided. I use a 5" steel leader because of all the fish around here that have teeth. I've been fishing for over 40 years and I've lost a LOT of Tackle around here. I bend the hooks out slightly to get a better hook set and make sure the legs aren't longer than the body of the frog. Works every single time :-D If there's a hungry fish nearby, you'll get'em.Thanks for the video.

Bite to hookup ratios are just naturally lower when frog fishing for a variety of reasons. But you can increase your odds by using a powerful rod, waiting a little longer to set the hook, and using braid.

I use 20lb spiderwire braid with a koppers walking frog (not weedless). The main reason for heavy line is the weeds and sticks that bass swim through. Also, for lures try the original chatterbait, Rick Clunn series 2 crankbaits, rapalas, any kopper lures, and even Gary Yamamoto soft plastic baits like the green/pink or red/black worms, and always Mepps spinners. If you'll fish at night with lures or worms, use dark colors, the best for night are black and red. Bright in the day. usually.

When i frog fish i like to give twitches to the frog kind of like a crank bait but slower and smaller. what it does is it creates a hopping motion that works it a little slower so i can leave the bait in the strike zone longer. it makes a sort of popping movement. it also helps when you reach a small opening it will give the frog the walk the dog action.

I like to use pline floroclear. I get minimal stretch and yet have the ability to tie good knots without having to use a leader as if i was using braid.

I use a shakespear short rod and reel. Have never had a problem with it. 15 pound line as well. Have pulled in monster bass (25 inches plus) and some really nice Pike with is as well. There are times where i thought she might snap but she never has.

I'll try and keep this short. Use braid, set the hook at a 10-3 o clock position, med heavy rod. When the fish bites, say 1, then say 2 and set the hook hard. Keep pressure and rush the fish back to the boat very quickly. Its hard to get good hooksets with frogs so you need to rush them, dont let them fish too much.

When fishing heavy cover you gotta use strong line. Braid works best...minimum 60-65lb test. Also wait for a few seconds before setting the hook. Make sure your rod is right for this type of fishing too. A stronger med-heavy to heavy rod will do great. Try different retrieves too...like erratic stop n go, "walk the dog", twitch, watch frogs and see how they move. Like experts say "EXPERIMENT" fish don't always react the same way.

The heavy braid is for A. Hook setting power since it has no stretch B. So the bass' abraisive mouths don't wear through as easy C. The line doesn't dig into the spool with thicker braid D. braid lasts longer than mono or floro

Fact: braided line is much stronger than mono. With braid you won't have the stretch that mono gives you when you set the hook. Also with mono, if the bass is bigger it might want to take a little dive, in that case braid is perfect because one good tug the lilly pad, or whatever its rapped around will rip easily, where as mono there is a good chance of it snapping. Trust me I used to use mono just like you. Braid may be more expensive, but in the end it is worth it.

If the fish are active/hungry/aggressive you will be able to retrieve it faster but if there not hitting on a fast retrieve its good to slow it down give the fish a chance to check it out then it will strike.

I just lost what would've been the biggest bass if my life yesterday, using a koppers live target frog. Was so disappointed and upset. It popped out of its mouth right at the shore like a foot from me and swam off real quick. No exaggeration probably about 24 inches and upwards of 6 lbs +. I love this frog to death though. I needed a heavier rod to drive the hook in deeper. Right before that hookup I caught a 2 and a half lb 18 inch . These frogs are awesome and I recommend them to everybody

live target frogs are my favorite, yes they're a few bucks more, but yes they're worth it, why? because they have real good color quality and also the plastic body is very soft and easy for a bass to bite down on. I've used snagproof frogs and they work too but they have a harder body and due to that i lose a lot of fish. If i couldn't use a LT frog i'd use a Spro.

rip out the strand legs put 2 jig rattles in backwards to plug the holes use 2 berkley power grubs for legs just put them on the hooks. the extra flavor will make them hold on a few more seconds.. when the bass hits just freeze!!! count to three or feel the fish pull for 1.5 seconds THEN PULL and hard...65 LB BRAID ONLY!!!!

I've got a good handful of topwater frogs, including live targets, river 2 sea, etc. but have never caught a thing on them... They look like lots of fun, but unfortunately were all clearly designed with largemouth in mind. They get nipped at here, but our smallies up North here just can't seem to get their top lips over the top of the bait when striking :(

In thick pads, walking it isn't really an option. My retrieve is pretty fast in this vid b/c that's how the bass wanted it on this day...but also try letting it sit in those openings with a quick twitch or two. If I was working the edges of the cover, I'd be walking it.

Bass don't 'miss' the frog, half of the bass strikes aren't to bite. Sometimes bass just charge a frog to knock him up and stun him. You need to not move the frog so the bass believes it and only set when the fish takes the frog under.
