Excellent video. Speeding up the tedious parts makes a massive difference to us viewers, and you didn’t rattle on for 5 minutes beforehand. Tackled mine the other day. Interestingly, no gasket listed on Australian models, and also i found another drain petcock down next to the oil filter.

Thanks MasterJacks, you saved me AU$910 a mechanic quoted for the job. I cannot believe, the noise is gone. Before watching this video I was thinking the engine was about to quit anytime on road, I was driving always on the left lane just in case. @ idle the noise was terrible, one day a guy at a park yard told me not to drive the car with that noise, something bad is going inside the engine.I've learnt something today!!!

Excellent DIY on water pump replacement. Those Toyota 3rd generations SUV’s are well known for this problem. I bought a 2006 model 8 years ago. There’s been numerous issues from Emission system, to burning oil, & water pump noises. I could hear the noise since day one I bought it. I ignored it cuz it wasn’t leaking, just that horrible grinding noise . It just gave up as I speak 8 years later. It leaks and needs replacement. I might not even fix it, but get rid of it, cuz the rust ate this car alive. They’re horrible for withstanding against temperature & humidity changes. They rust like crazy. I can admit that This generation of Toyota SUV’s are the worst cars ever made by Toyota that puts their name and reputation at question. Don’t buy from 2006-2012 my two cent advice. Thanks for the video ❤

I just replaced one on my daughters' 2009 V6, its close but you dont need to remove the alternator. You do need to remove the engine mount also a belt pully and tensioner. Some of the bolts are behind the water pump pully, it needs to be unbolted, I couldnt remove it by itself, it came out with the pump. the V6 pump is bigger and has two gaskets, one on each side of the metal gasket. You do need to move the motor up & down do access the bolts & remove parts. It took about 3hrs to remove, about the same to reinstall with cleaning and preparing. I can see why shops charge as much as they do for this job. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the video, super helpful.I just subscribed! This was a fairly easy job. Here's what I did that that worked great on my 2009 rav4 2.5L. I didn't have to remove the engine mount or the tire or bottom support. I only removed a couple clips (center button pushes in then the clip can be removed easy) on the top rad cover and bent it back a bit to expose the 10mm bolt for the water reservoir. I removed the water reservoir(2 bolts), alternator(2 bolts), small bracket that held the wiring for alternator(1 bolt), bottom rad cover/cowling and panel in the wheel well( center of clip pulls out then the clip comes out). I didn't remove the tire. Petcock turns counterclockwise and I put a hose on the petcock and drained directly into an old antifreeze container. Mine was a bit stiff so I used a wrench to wiggle a tiny bit then undid by hand. Did almost everything except the bottom bolt from the top side and torqued everything from the top side with my 2 foot long 1/2 torque wrench to 15 ft lbs. Surprisingly easy considering how tight it is in there. No sealant on mine as it had that black stuff on the metal gasket. No leaks so far. I also replaced the serpentine belt tensioner as the bearings were going on it as well. 1-12mm bolt in the middle of the tensioner to remove, super easy to do. I found the critical thing was the total length of the 12 mm socket/ratchet combo that had to fit between the engine and the side of the engine bay. Too short and it wouldn't sit on the bolt right, too long and it wouldn't fit in the space. My deep sockets didn't fit, so I used a 3/8 socket, a 3/8 to 1/2 inch adapter, and thinner ratchet worked fine. I also used a 1/4 socket, 1/4 to 3/8 adapter and a 3/8 thinner ratchet worked fine as well. Once the bolts were loosened everything was easy to remove by hand.

@MasterJacks4 жыл бұрын
Hmm...if it's really tight I'd make sure to use a six-point socket so you don't end up rounding the head and causing more trouble. Try finding the magic length socket or extension that clears the pulley but still gives you enough space to get a long ratchet or breaker bar on there between the inner fender well. That's a tough one, good luck!

Why did you put though rtv isnt the gasket enough for the job? thanks for the info and nice vid!
@MasterJacks3 жыл бұрын
Toyota actually calls for RTV rather than a gasket. They specify a 2.2 - 2.5mm bead of Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, 3-bond 1207B or equivalent. The water pump came with a gasket, and it's probably enough, but a little RTV is good insurance for a job buried deep in the motor. Didn't want to do it twice, lol.

Nice video, but disconnect the negative, not the positive. This video will probably be responsible for a couple hundred burnt wrenches. Good camera angles, one of the few videos I have found that clearly show the tensioner on this model Rav4.
@MasterJacks4 жыл бұрын
Good clarification. That having been said, if you can disconnect the positive (without shorting the wrench to the chassis) the rest of the work on the alternator will be harmless. Just pointing that out to the lay-reader afraid of getting zapped. It's all in series so opening the positive or negative has the same effect once disconnected. Nice catch!

If car stationary with engine running, rev it, does noise increase with revs? - its engine related. Press clutch down, does noise go away with clutch held down? - maybe clutch release bearing. Other thing causes scraping sound is if small stones get stuck between brake disc & back plate but only sounds when moving
