Moustache was a French dog born in 1799. Moustache crossed the Great St Bernard Pass in the Alps with the French army in 1800. While his regiment was encamped, he barked to alert the men from a surprised Austrian night attack. Moustache was made a grenadier. He ate the field rations entitled to a grenadier and was combed once a week by the unit's barber. He received a bayonet wound before the battle of Marengo, but still took part in the battle where he engaged with an Austrian pointing dog that he defeated. He was wounded by a shot and lost an ear. Right before the battle of Austerlitz in 1805, Moustache discovered an Austrian spy in the French camp. During the battle, the standard bearer of the regiment was killed, and Moustache stayed to protect the flag. Though wounded in the leg, he managed to take the flag back to the camp. Moustache had his leg amputated. Marshal Jean Lannes ordered a medal to be striken in his honour, with the words "He lost a leg at the Battle of Austerlitz and saved the regimental flag" on the front and "Moustache, A French dog: Everywhere respected and cherished as a hero" on the reverse. Moustache was then presented to Napoleon himself. The dog continued to serve in the French army in many battles in Spain until he was killed by a cannonball during the siege of Badajoz in 1812, at 12 years old. Moustache was buried with military honours, along his medal and ribbon, with a gravestone engraved with the words "Here lies the brave Moustache".

I’m thinking he had some degree of comprehension. Not understanding that there was a war going on but comprehending that he was in the middle of something serious, considering how he would find and comfort wounded soldiers, and even learned bugle calls, drills, and could salute when other soldiers would. And also, the German soldier he apprehended was a spy, so he understood something was going on lol.

A dogs loyalty never dies, these 2 dogs proved it, these dogs are, Hachiko, or, Hachi, whom was found as a pup by a man, the man's wife didnt want to keep the dog, but did anyway. Hachi followed his owner every day to work, until one day his owner had a heart attack and passed away, though Hachi waited and waited and his owner never returned, he waited again, and again. For 10 long years this dog waited for his owner, and never stopped until he died of old age, in China, and now in is waiting spot, lies a statue in his place. Next, theres Stubby. An " Ordinary " Street stray, until, like this video doesnt do justice to, trained with the soilders, warned them of deathly gas, helped them fight, and helped to dig free and save the lives of many soilders, he, as well as Hachi, will be remembered as true heroes, who waited there days helping the people they loved, now that, is a good boy.
