Leo Major was the Weakest Canadian Soldier during WW2. During the Battle of Zwolle, he liberated the city by himself. A feat not accomplished in World War Two or another other war, I think. I'm not a historian

Even with the battle of Zwolle story still being unclear, you have to admit that what he did outside of Zwolle were still fascinating as hell. Not only that, just before he stopped serving, he got married and his marriage last until his passing away, a whole 57 years. For a marriage to last that long you gotta say he was a good man.
@giantWario
@giantWario 9 ай бұрын
It's not really unclear at all, there were plenty of eyewitnesses, the people of Zulle all overwhelmingly said he did drive out the Germans in only one night. It's just so unbelievable that historians 80 years later are starting to say that it must have been exaggerated now that all of the people who were there that day have died. There is no reason for anyone to exaggerate his actions by the way, the Canadian army actually tried their hardest to downplay him since he was a Québec independantist so they didn't want to make him into a national hero. Which is why he somehow never got a Victoria Cross at any point during his career.

Contemporary historians starting to say that his actions must have been exaggerated are being stupid by the way. First of all, the evidence was kind of overwhelming. Everyone in Zulle, including the Dutch resistance said that yeah, he did drive the Germans out essentially single-handedly. But more importantly, his superiors really didn't like him. The Canadian army actually tried their hardest to downplay him since he was a Québec independentist who really didn't like the British so they didn't want to make him into a national hero. He refused to get a medal from General Montgomery because he said the guy was too incompetent and he always refused to give his prisoners to the British or other Canadian regiments, making sure to bring them back only to his Québec regiment no matter what. So who would have been ''exaggerating his actions'' exactly? He obviously wasn't being used for propaganda.

@@giantWario most of it is true but the whole Montgomery thing was actually about him going out to drink instead and not showing up as opposed as a big protestation thing. That story was built on his back but yeah his prisoners his regiment (Canadian, mostly Anglos were sort of famous for killing their prisoners of war...)

The secret to him holding the hill was a radio contact with an artillery group. He pretty much asked for them to pound the hill with every available shell, besides for his position. His group only had to shoot whoever managed to not get blown up by the spicy rain. He personately took care of one of his wounded dudes by lifting him down the hill on his back, while still having back problems from his landmine accident in WW2.
