There is something of a 10th/bonus episode..."The Bloody Hundredth"...from Wikipedia: "This episode is a companion documentary film allowing for a in depth meeting of the real life airmen who inspired Masters of the Air." Definitely worth checking out.

If you didn’t know those kids who run around the airbase will go on to lead the restoration of RAF thorpe abbotts which is now known as the 100th bomb group museum today with the help by their volunteers and the veterans and their families of the 100th BG.

My grandfather who emigrated here from Poland at 7 signed up when WW2 broke out. He was a 8th grade drop out who spoke fluent Polish, Russian, and English. At 18 he was fighting Africa then Italy the was and at Normandy. He broke through the line on the Buldge under Patton. At the end he wound up being an interpreter at the liberated concentration camps. My dad said he rarely spoke about his service but he did say "He could handle the killing, seeing soldiers dying, seeing the citizens free after the nazis were removed, but the Holocaust haunted him more then anything"

That would haunt any man. My father-in-law's wife told me that Jim only saw one of the smaller camps after it was empty. She told me that he could smell the death and he cried.

The German camp officer was attempting to show the American officer they were equals or comrades. The American's insistence on the salute instead was a sign that military decorum was still expected, but they were not equals and he expected his orders to be followed.

Also I assume the Americans had seen the camps, and knew full well what the Nazis had been up to and his utter disgust wouldn't let him shake that man's hand, even if he was just a commander of an air force POW camp

My father-in-law was a waist gunner on a B-24 Liberator. The only thing he ever said to me was, "Thank God you never have to see what a Bf 109's 20mm cannon can do to a man." I once referred to him as a hero, which he replied, "The only hero was a Brit that climbed on the wing of a Lancaster under attack to put out an engine fire." I didn't think such a story could be true so I didn't comment on it. I honor Jim's memory. He was a great man on so many different levels.

In legend, seeing a white horse means freedom. When Buck saw that injured white horse, he knew he was going to make it to freedom.

@@johannesvalterdivizzini1523 After the series, there was a behind the scenes type video that explained certain highlights of each episode. In that scene, in that episode, it was said that’s what Buck was thinking, “it was the expression on his face & the look in his eye” that gave the viewer the idea that Buck knew he would make it to freedom. In folk lore, a white horse is the symbol for freedom. So are you saying the director is wrong in his meaning of the white horse. That behind the scenes video is my source, it backs me up. That video is out there, see for yourself.

Yes you're correct about it representing freedom for Bucky but it also represents all the deaths of the war. In the tale of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, the fourth horse was a pale horse and the personification of Death. So the pale horse riding out of the gloom and past Bucky Into the light very neatly depicts the end of the war and freedom for Bucky.... but the horse is bloodied so there is one more death to come in the forest.
@MichaelSSmith-hs5pw
@MichaelSSmith-hs5pw 3 ай бұрын
@@nicholasmilne2908 Thank you. But it was Buck not Bucky who saw the white horse. The blood on the horse could have meant death, or it could have meant the horse was running toward freedom away from death, which the horse did run away from the battle, toward freedom.

@16:50 the "handshake" was a step too far and was denied. While military decorum between hostile forces during/following surrender was and is appropriate, respect and certainly friendship was not earned by the Nazis based on their conduct during the war. That far along in the war, what they had done collectively during the war was certainly well known to some extent.

Coca-Cola saved my brother's life. He was soon to be in the midst of the Virginia Tech shootings here in the US, and hear the gunfire. There were repairs going on and he thought he was hearing nail guns, and decided to tell them to keep it down. But he decided to get a Coke first, and that was enough of a delay that someone in the model shop grabbed him, pulled him in, and told him something of what was happening. They barricaded themselves in the shop. W/o the Coke detour, he would have continued walking directly to the shooter.

Hi Bisscute, I loved watching this series with you, it's been an awesome series with great action and characters, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I've loved it, aerial warfare is my thing and it's been such a thrill to watch these 9 episodes. Please continue this sub genre with Memphis Belle & Red Tails :) based on 2 true stories of WWII - the first US Army Air Corps B17 bomber plane crew's 25th and final mission of their tour of duty in Europe & the first African American pilots in the US Air Force respectively. 2 brilliant movies and 2 of my favourites. I love your channel and reactions, lovely beautiful lady & I'm happily subscribed :)

Much much deeper. “Field of Dreams”, “Miracle”, “Remember the Titans”, “Brian’s Song”… another old classic “To Sir with Love”… and if you have Netflix watch the documentary “The Greatest Night in Pop” about the creation of We Are the World song and video. Love and hugs from Brooklyn, NY, USA.

Hi Biss. I enjoyed watching your reaction to the series. Overall, I thought the first six episodes were very well done but that the series faltered with episodes seven and eight. My feeling is that the series suffered from the same problem as the 2019 movie Midway. They tried to cram too much into too few episodes and, as a result, the narrative suffered. I believe the series could've been much more impactful had they either added another 3 episodes, or had they maintained a tighter focus on the story of the 100th bomb group and less on ancillary characters and events. I would have preferred to see the story of Quinn and Bailey's evasion and escape through France and Spain or following Rosie's progression through his first 25 missions rather than having the massive time skips in Eps 7 and 8 when they focused on the POW camp. Too many stories were set up only to fizzle out or be dropped completely. What was most disappointing for me was how they skipped over Operation Argument (aka Big Week) from Feb 20-25th. At the end of episode 7, Rosie agrees to do another tour and he and Col. Bennett discuss plans to use bombers as bait to lure the Luftwaffe day fighters into the air so that the US fighters can destroy them. This was "Big Week". It was a massive series of battles that saw the destruction of 500 German fighters and it greatly reduced the threat those fighters posed to the US daylight bombing raids. I cannot understand why they showed us a scene where they discuss this plan at the end of one episode only to skip over it in episode 8 and jump to right before D-Day. At any rate, I'm greatly interested in the bombing campaigns of WWII (although I'm much more knowledgeable about the RAF and RCAF Bomber Command night bombing campaigns than I am about the USAAF daylight raids) so I greatly enjoyed the series. I think Band of Brothers is a better overall narrative but their story of the war in Europe is a much shorter, more cohesive one and therefore easier to tell as it covers men from one company from the D-Day til the end of the war. Masters of the Air covers a longer time span and is centered on a Bomber Group which had many more men than a US Parachute company. Also, the losses suffered by the 100th Bomb Group and the USAAF 8th Air Force in the early phases of their campaign were horrific. The 100th lost about 77% of their original compliment of air crews. By the end of the war, the 8th Air Force lost about 12% of their members as killed in action (~26,000 men). More aircrews were lost from the 8th Air Force than US Marines lost in the Pacific. As sobering as these numbers are, they are but a fraction of the losses suffered by the members of RAF Bomber Command. By war's end, Bomber Command had suffered about a 46% KIA rate (~56,000 men). I hope that this series renews people's interest in the subject matter. I know Peter Jackson, director of Lord of the Rings, has been trying to do a remake of the 1955 movie, The Dambusters but that the project keeps running into funding problems. My hope is that the project will now get the green light and the film will be made. It's a fascinating story. Finally, please consider watching and reacting to a Japanese movie called Grave of the Fireflies (Hotaru no Haka). It tells the story of two Japanese children who struggle to survive after their city is firebombed during WWII. It's a truly powerful film.

Given what the show purported to be, it was not up to Band of Brothers or the Pacific. There was too much made up events that there was no evidence for. At least Band of Brothers and the Pacific tried to remain true to the actual events. All in all it was a good serious.

@@TheSocratesian - Well, that was an issue with John Orloff not being allowed to shelve the two Bucks, after they were shot down. Virtually everything with Rosie and Crosby is based on events that happened to them. Since, Rosenthal had a well-documented military career, and Crosby wrote a memoir.

@@ChienaAvtzonThe stuff with Rosenthal and Crosby was fine for the most part, although the stuff they omitted was a complete travesty for show that purports to be about the 8th Air Force. Rosenthal was certainly one of the truly great aviators of the 8th Air Force. But they really went over the top with the POW stuff, jamming in the Tuskegee Airmen and most egregiously the complete made up espionage garbage with Wingate.
