From the executive producers of Band of Brothers and The Pacific comes Masters of the Air, now streaming on Apple TV+ apple.co/_Mast...
Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.
The series features a stellar cast led by Academy Award nominee Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle and Nate Mann, who are joined by Raff Law, Academy Award nominee Barry Keoghan, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook and Ncuti Gatwa.
Hailing from Apple Studios, "Masters of the Air" is executive produced by Steven Spielberg through Amblin Television, and Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman for Playtone. Amblin Television’s Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey co-executive produce alongside Playtone’s Steven Shareshian. In addition to writing, Orloff co-executive produces. Graham Yost also serves as co-executive producer. Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck, Cary Joji Fukunaga, Dee Rees and Tim Van Patten serve as directors.

The air scenes look cartoonish and the writing and dialogue looks cornball and jingoistic. The bit with the Tuskegee Airmen comes off as ham-handed, clumsy and pigeonholed in for the sheer sake of DiVeRSiTy.

The best piece of diversity I've seen shown in a realistic manor was Call of Duty:Finest Hour's "Come out Fighting" mission which had black tankers of the 761st Tank Battalion fighting in Battle of the Bulge. It was a fantastic mission showing what the 761st went threw. The Tuskegee Airman stuff in this show seems very shoehorned in and even over the top drama. I wish they would do a calm, none over the top series about them.
@cassidy109
@cassidy109 9 ай бұрын
@@Invicta556 It’s been a minute since I’ve read the book that this miniseries is supposedly based on. However, IIRC there was a chapter that dealt with race and black American servicemen who were ground crewmen or attached to construction battalions stationed in the UK. I suppose if this miniseries had utilized some of that material they could’ve accurately and faithfully touched upon black American contributions. Might have made an interesting thematic juxtaposition, if properly presented, of America fighting an evil regime while treating some of its own servicemen as second class citizens.
@jkorshak
@jkorshak 9 ай бұрын
The Tuskegee airmen flew over southern, central, and northern Europe, including Berlin. They were literally in the same skies and some were in the same POW camps. They were a legitimate, actual, and literal part of the air war. Calling it shoehorned diversity says more about the difficulty for some accepting the presentation of black pilots and personnel 's heroic service in the air war than it is an accurate characterization of why they are present in the story. There's enough history to go around - calling it shoehorned and due to "diversity" is shamefully ignorant.

The big difference.. the pacific and band of brothers.. were fighters .. soldiers vs soldiers .. they had respect for each other.. these were bomber pilots … killing women, children and babies.. no respect for them. As a German.. I am sick and tired of this… Since nearly 80 years.. movies.. tv shows… Germans are annoyed.. remembering the war.. yes… celebrate it for 80 years on television? America.. you are going to lose the people.. and an ally.. because.. I was serving alongside American troops as a soldier.. but even me.. starting turning my back towards the US.

This trailer is very polished looking. I hope they haven't abandoned the gritty realism and harsh tone that in my book is what made Band of Brothers and the Pacific the timeless classics that they are. There is a reason those two series are timeless while WWII films like Unbroken and Red Tails or the recent Greyhound with Tom Hanks on Apple TV aren't - it's the manufactured smaltz factor that the latter have. I think Butler is a fine actor, but I hope he's not over-emoting this entire series like it comes across in the trailer

That's 2.5% of total sorties. But hey lets make it like they flew 50% of all sorties. I'm not against representing of the black airmen "Red Tails". But then make a whole movie/series about them (which btw all ready been made). This is just skewed history of the fact that WHITE MEN fought and died in large majority in both WWI and WWII. Read the book for the second time this summer. It is a masterpiece. While the trailer looks nice and flashy, there is here a sort of veil of romance and bravado that is not felt in the book. The book is blood and guts and 'normal' (If you can can people that crawl into a ball turret normal) people doing incredible things. As others have mentioned, I hope they are not losing the grip on what made The Pacific, Private Ryan and especially Band of Brothers great; the grounded, uncensored, grim and realistic look, feel and sound. I think I heard something the Hanks even commented that he wanted a grimmer tone for Masters of the Air, more on par with 'Das Boot' for this one- and I am not quite feeling it from this trailer. This feels VERY Hollywood in all aspects.. 'Pretty girl back home', Slow motion explosions, sunsets everywhere...Rest assured- I will still watch it do death- I just hope they do the source material justice in all it's brutality and grit. Edit: Have now seen the first two episodes and I am sad to say the trailer is exactly what the show is; polished, romantic and with mediocre writing at best. More Pearl Harbour style than anyhing else. Sunsets, posing, stereotypes galore, apple pie, lens flares and effects defying the laws of physics. Watchable: Oh yes! Masterpiece: No. You are better served not comparing to BoB and see it very much as its own thing and enjoy the views and period detail. Despite not being up there with the best- it still has things to enjoy. Time to re-read the book.

This is so clearly missing the HBO touch. Nobody over there would let this amount of CGI replace things that could be done practically. I'm sure the story will be compelling, but from this trailer alone (which is a massive caveat) the visual signature that was created with Saving Private Ryan, perfected with Band of Brothers and then carried through in the Pacific. I know the nature of the show is different, and that the intricacies of dogfights would be near impossible to create without GCI, but some ground-based sets here are clearly computers, and the grading is all over the place. The sunset/sunrise scene looks like something from a Baz Luhrmann film. Like when Easy Company were in the sunshine in Berchtesgaden, you could still feel the same grit that was there during Bastogne.

Obviously this is made with incredible production value and I'm sure the performances will be fantastic, but I worry about this suffering something that The Pacific also suffered from. Yes, they show the horrific nature of the war and all that jazz, but The Pacific and these trailers give off some romanticizing that Band of Brothers didn't have. Obviously it had some in BoB, but the one liners in The Pacific and especially so in these trailers are making me weary.

yeah I feel that. BoB was so great because it was just about the group in Easy company, no home lives, no home romances/memories of gfs/wives. To be totally honest, as an American vet, it probably paints an accurate picture of arrogant American servicemen. Before I deployed to Iraq, I was stationed in Germany, and American servicemen don't always put the best image forward. When I was learning to speak German, I would often say, "I am not like other Americans," so they wouldn't get the same impression of me. However, I think that would be mostly from the lower enlisted and not of the officers. I think they series was trying to shine light on the fact that the US bombed by day and the British by night. It is a good example of how a Hollywood cliché can screw up a good series. I am quite disappointed by the lack of attention to detail. Just an example, you never say "Roger Wilco." Roger means understood, and Wilco means understood and will comply, but you never say both. Just a small example of the historical inaccuracies in this series.

The British had a documented disdain for all of the Allies. They felt superior and let down by others since they had been fighting for 2 years.

This is so authentic that they even used CGI from the 1940s.

Please, be so kind to find them even 10 B-17s to rent so that the CGI isn't needed anymore. To say nothing of dozens of them, if not a hundred

I am instantly reminded of memphis belle. That movie is so epic and band of brothers is my favorite series. The Pacific was great too. I hope parents show their kids these series so they know how these young men and women saved us

Just hope Austin Butler isn't too much of a distraction. It's gotta be about the team, not the individuals, like with band of brothers and the Pacific

“The Pacific” was not about the team. It was about three different Marines.

You're drowning in the "everything is woke" narrative. The trailer shows a shot of them in the prison camp with the dudes. And records show they were indeed in the same stalag as these guys. Oh, and the trailer also shows a map of Italy if you pay attention. Wake da fuq up.

Oh no, the cgi doesnt look good. I loved band if Brothers and the pacific but this looks more like a bad cgi movie like red tails. Hopefully im wrong but the trailer looks cheesy and not the same style as the previous shows.

This is gon’be gooood! Hopefully they don’t focus too much on Buttler’s character and instead the greater cast/squadron like with BoB

So happy Callum Turner is in this. He’s really breaking out into Hollywood. Most of you may know him as the brother in Fantastic Beasts, but highly recommend watching The Boys in the Boat that just came out in theaters because he leads that. He’s a talented actor who’s humble and just feels really genuine. Can’t wait to watch this!
