Mastodon's best song right here. I could never get that fast proggy riff sounding right so thanks for clearing it up here! If you want to do more Mastodon, maybe go a bit out there and do Trilobite. An old skool hidden gem.

The traded singles on the snare drum and kick when the “caveman 1” section starts is the song’s mvp in my opinion. So good.

Bill showed me something slightly different at a lesson. In the pre-verse riff, instead of 5/3 5/3 he plays it as 5/3 0(c string) 3 (g string) . Same notes as you, but on the 2nd iteration it's an open c string instead 5th fret on g. Your mastodon breakdowns are my favorite. Thanks Uncle Ben

What's difficult with mastodon songs is bill and Brent typically play 2 different variations of their riffs, especially given that bill doesn't do hybrid picking while Brent does, getting good videos of them playing riffs to transcribe is a bit of a challenge.

Excellent stuff dude. There are parts of that I've been trying to figure out why I can't get them to sound right, this really helped. I do think you missed a part though. The section you're calling Caveman 2 *I think* doesn't repeat exactly. The little A-A#-A-A octaves followed by two low A chugs at the end of each phrase, every other repeat of it I believe is played A-A#-A and then 3 chugs. At least that's how it sounds to my ears. I love these breakdowns. Thank you!

Do you ever do songs on your Lessons sites? The solo breakdown you did for Skid Row 18 and life actually gave me the balls to finally try it and I am so so glad i did. I have a tough time learning just by watching tabs and stuff and watching you actually DO it and explain it made all the difference for me. I know ya do alot of work for all the videos ya make, but do you think ya might do more like that? I grew up in the 70's and 80's so my genre is the Hair Band era and of course the british metal groups of that time also and would LOVE to see some more of those types especially crazy train by ozzy:)

I find it funny that the crap we all sat alone and "noodled" at age 15 is now mainstream. I couldn't tell you how many times my parents yelled at me to turn my amp down, or asked, "Is that the garbage you're learning from the lessons we pay for?" Ah, memories of a Peavey Renown Amp with a Warlock plugged into it. My Warlock had the name Screaming Leaming painted on the back....I now know what I had. But I'll never mention the POS Kramer I traded it for. Yeah, memories.

Hey Ben, I spotted that you play that 2nd Riff a little bit different than the Mastodon Guy's. The Notes are correct. It's just that slide in that first part of that 2nd Riff where Mastodon use to play the open D String instead of sliding up into that 5th Fret of the A String again. It's defiantly no big deal, but I thought you might be interested in that. Like your content and your guitar playing. Keep shredding. Cheers Kassi Ps: I would like to see a Divinations Cover including that Guitar Solo. I struggle a bit of getting that Solo right. 🙂
@Tomas_Ef Жыл бұрын
I dont think there are any slides there imo. You can see and hear in their live performance that they are using open strings and octave harmony gives that sound that may sound like slides. Check my modest cover of this song if you want 🙂.

Ben, could you please, just consider, exploring the idea, of dissecting the Transformers Theme guitar parts? The rhythm and solo? Performed by David Coverdale before Lion even had their first album. It's not on KZbin, David never talks bout it, but it's awesome.

About that second part (about 6:00 in): dear Uncle Ben, seems you lost your "life footage-jitsu". Bill plays low part, Brent plays high part. Also, the sliding part of that riff, 5G to 3G, is only kinda correct, but the way they play it in low position (at least Bill does) is slide 5 to 3, then open C, then 3G (referring to actual tuning ;) ). Note-wise is kinda the same, it loses the second slide effect, but I'm not the one to tell Bill how he should play it ;) It kinda makes the whole movement more easier, as it limits the repositioning of fretting hand (which is my stepdad's favourite). They are numerous live videos that show the sliding movement only for the first two notes in that run. I highly recommend this one: Mastodon: Mother Puncher live in Columbus, Ohio 6/5/18 @ExpressLive Sound is so-so, but you clearly see the hand positions. Also, if you pay attention to Bill's movements during that riff, you'll see that they aren't playing traditional harmony, Bill plays some descending run... Check it out. Also here - shitty footage, but the sound is good, and it seems they both play different lick every other time: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHPMgHyKj612bqs
