Brann, the drummer, had a big impact on the Crack the Skye album since the whole idea really revolved around the suicide of his 11 year old sister. Ohmygod you're going to be in Grand Rapids?! I moved here in 2003 and was living here (still live here) when I met my husband, a beautiful, golden human being and metalhead who bore resemblance to Brann. (Aric always, also, wished to play drums. Instead he played a bit of bass.) He introduced me to so much amazing music including Mastedon. This was one of his favorite songs. Ours is a soul-based love that has endured the six years since his death, and will sustain me my life long. When I want to be closer to Aric, I can hug his pillow, wear his hoodie, or boot up one of his beloved metal tracks. Like this one. Thank you.

I always love how the instruments combine to let me hear and feel that journey into numb anxiety, anger and finally a shutdown of emotions for a brief exhausted silence. I can feel all the nuance of this section of depression through the instruments and at the same time the lyrics articulate it beautifully. After all that time spent struggling to explain that whirlpool of emotions, hoping some day someone listens to the struggle, Mastodon bring in the entire band on the same message and that's cathartic to me.

God damn masterpiece of a song. Still gives me chills.

I need to find that Rolling Stone article about Crack the Skye. I see so much that was described there here, how the drummer was so innocent because he was 12 and didn't understand what happened to his sister. God, the pain is so tangible. The end of the song is perfect, because the last sane man realizes all his friends are dead, he's the last one left. That is true oblivion, being the only one left to witness your pain.

I met Bill Kelliher in the crowd at a festival in the UK watching Alice in chains. He was just chilling and i recognized him and he asked if he could drink some of my cider so i said "Yeah sure" and he drank well over half of my pint of cider. That shit's expensive at festivals man.

I flew beyond the sun before it was time Burning all the gold that held me inside my shell Waiting for you to pull me back in I almost had the world in my sight Lost love, bright eyes fading Faster than stars falling How can I tell you that I've failed? Tell you I failed Falling from grace 'cause I've been away too long Leaving you behind with my lonesome song Now I'm lost in oblivion I tried to burrow a hole into the ground Breaking all the fingers and the nails from my hand The eyes of a child see no wrong Ignorant bliss, impending doom Lost love, bright eyes fading Faster than stars falling How can I tell you that I've failed? Tell you I failed Falling from grace 'cause I've been away too long Leaving you behind with my lonesome song Now I'm lost Falling from grace 'cause I've been away too long Leaving you behind with my lonesome song Now I'm lost in oblivion Falling from grace 'cause I've been away too long Leaving you behind with my lonesome song Now I'm lost Falling from grace 'cause I've been away too long Leaving you behind with my lonesome song Now I'm lost in oblivion, in oblivion, in oblivion

I was fresh outta highschool...2009 was the perfect year before so many things went wrong...I met these guys at my first Mastodon concert that year...life was amazing then, God bless these guys. I'll always miss those times and when Mastodon was still relatively young and was the soundtrack to my life...

I don't think you could ever call Mastadon stoner rock man....it's heavy as fuck and some of their songs have got that bluesy riffage going on. Metal aint it? You guys should check out Orange Goblin if you like this song...check out their latest album 'Eulogy for the Damned'..they started as a straight up stoner rock band, but now its fully fledged metal with insane heavy rifs...so maybe your right..I donnow...
@tristanvernon54248 жыл бұрын
+Jaden Grattan I wouldn't classify Mastodon as stoner rock (Kyuss for the win!), but this song definitely leans toward that side of metal. It just lacks the sludgy, doomy sounds of pure stoner rock.
