It's amazing to see Matala full of life & so different to when I backpacked around Greece in 1983...& slept in one of the caves on the beach (May 83) It was a very quiet place then, only 3 of us on the beach. A mid 20's Canadian couple & myself at 18yrs old. Clear blue skies & temps in the 80's. Beautiful place...fond memories. I must go back & reminise. Thanks for sharing this.

@@tman5634 I was there in early 1981. We pitched a tent in the camping ground. I’m so thankful I experienced Matilda when it was pristine and not geared towards tourism. Seeing it now is dispiriting but that’s ‘progress’ on the march….

I really appreciate that you show the Crowds in of the high season .. it is beginning of August? I really love these southern places like matala plakias or pleochora but tell me they are all that crowded by now every August or are there still some beautiful villages left undiscovered on crete?

It was at the beginning of June. Is the same in the rest of the Crete regions. Now in the Covit time, I don't know-how will be...

Yes i guess so.. crete is really popular for long time allready but actually the whole european mediteranian area is allready well discovered .. even croatia and albania or sardegna that were still calm treasures not long ago.. it doesnot bother me and i am really delighted with south of crete. Can you recommend were actually to stay best having a Rented car.. palepchora area, plakias area or malata area? Where did the Cretian village atmosphere remain the best way ? I see that plakias is in the middle and you can visit everything in the west from there ..but is the village itself pretty?
