I am 70 now but when I was a young man in the 1980s I worked at a BMW dealership and got to drive those things. I had a blast driving the wheels off the 635M but the 633i was a better drivers car, it was lighter and more nimble than that big shed. I am interested to see how you get on with it, there looks like rust will be a problem, good luck young man!

Hi Mat. I had a problem with an ECU a few years ago. £700 for a replacement and nobody was prepared to check or look at the ECU. I gave it to a TV repair man as a last resort. He checked it and found that somebody had put the wrong polarity to it. It burnt out 15mm of track and blew a transistor. He resoldered the track and replaced the transistor. No other damage to ECU because the blown transistor prevented the current travelling any further. Total cost....£13.50.....brilliant.

Hey I'm really glad you're doing an old car too. In 1995 I bought a 1976 BMW 2002tii in bright yellow. Heavy but quick. I drove it on Castle Comb and was featured in a classic car magazine. I had lots of mods done to it in Hastings but the monthly running and repairs were more than my mortgage. It broke down too often and I had a baby at the time and needed something problem free so I replaced it with a Sierra. Now I drive a mk2 AUDI TT. That baby is now 29 and can drive my TT. She lives in Berlin. And BTW I was one of the first people to ever drive a TT in Bavaria at the factory and in the countryside around Munich.

If I remembered anything from Sreten (M539 Restorations), you should never start a car which sat for a long time like this, rather, dump all the fluids, disassemble all you can and manually turn over the engine. I do hope there is no catastrophic failure with this one. It's a great project.

I can hear the fuel pump, waterpump, the correct manual is the dog leg left reverse getrag box... You will need a new flywheel to install and the trust bearing. Also change the timing chain and rails. The autobox is probably ok, just top it up and change the filter before you do the manual conversion. Some of these motors had a problem with crankahaft end float so the crankshaft pulley would shake itself loose. To bleed the cooling system its one 3rd coolant in that 12.8 litre system. Also check the airfilter and clean the idle valve using brake cleaner.

Great cars! I owned a 635 CSI 30 years ago now, one of my favourites out of all the cars I’ve had since. Even back then they suffered rust after a few years and I had gearbox (4 speed switchable auto) problems, one issue was a speed sensor on the output of the gearbox, it’d put the car in to a limp mode. It wasn’t a bad auto and when these are running correctly they are quite a quick car. I had mine on a rolling road and it made the numbers ok.

I have had two E28, 528i's from the early to mid 80's, the fuel pump relay was an big issue. There was a Vauxhall relay supplied by Lucas that was an identical match. Then on the 2nd car I bought the Bosch relay from the dealer and that lasted 5 months, they said it was a faulty batch!! you can hardwire the contacts, but that's so wrong as the fuel pump will always be running, got me home in a fix though!!

Some time these cars might have an EWS issue preventing them from starting but glad you figured out the cranking issue and spark

Mat.. you know what would make a brilliant video... you doing up my 61 plate astra estate, the body is fine, its silvery gray but I'm open to the thought of you giving it a respray, perhaps in a deep metallic cherry red, but if you think it would look better in a different colour then I'm open to that, I'm sure it would get you loads of views, looking forward to meeting you, 🤞 😁

Well done young man, you are good with these problems and now the beast is alive. When it is finished I would love to get a ride in it because I had a heap of fun in those cars when they first came out. Whenever we got a new model in we always liked to find out how fast they were, so we found a good piece of tarmac and went for it, I really can't remember how fast that thing went out of the box, I have a feeling it was in the 145, 150 mph area. My Renault 10 Gordini was the car that I loved, it was light and quick and pissed all over RS Escorts in the day!

You're so creative man... I like the music, you are taking us completely to the 1980s. Great content.
