First week on the CBS Match Game for everyone's favourite redhead Fannie Flagg. Flagg had previously appeared on the NBC Match Game throughout the 1960s and appeared about as regularly on that as she did on the CBS one! At the time, Flagg had until recently been a cast member of The New Dick Van Dyke Show. She has also appeared on Pyramid, Tattletales (although Flagg is a lesbian, she appeared alongside Dick Sargent who was gay), Hollywood Squares and To Tell the Truth. Flagg was well known on Match Game for her bad spelling (she is dyslexic) and later for wearing T-shirts that would show off her, shall we say, prize assets. No wonder Brett was always so hostile to her, she was probably jealous. She also had a pretty good record for matching with contestants. Flagg clocked up a massive 90 weeks on the CBS Match Game, a further 16 weeks in the syndicated series and a further 4 weeks on the NBC's Match Game! Hollywood Squares! Hour! in 1984. From there she overcame her dyslexia and became a successful author. Her most famous book is the 1987 novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe (which she later adapted into a successful film). Now on to the other non-regulars! Bert Convy is now in his sixth week on the show, his last full week of 1973. Third week for jokesters Jack Carter and Ann Elder.

Bert Convey was the first one to use the "How fat was she?" remark on Match Game! It became a standard in later seasons. Of course, the originator of that question was the immortal Ed McMahon from Johnny Carson's Tonight Show.

I wonder what they would have done with the first question if Charles Nelson Reilly had been there. I can imagine someone mentioning his hair would have drawn a lot of laughs.

Though he did give some gal a peck in a previous episode, this is the first instance of Gene "welcoming properly" a new gal, kissing Flagg albeit on her nape not her lips. Brett's baiting of others gets tiresome. 'Meat' should've only garnered one match not the two with 'steak.'

I don't understand why they allowed Brett to be so nasty to Betty, Mary Anne, or Jo Ann...She acts this way all the years the show was on, I don't find her funny at all. Now she does have her charming moments, not many! Brett Somers is MEAN!!!

Love the lower tier. Brett did not do much but belittle all the pretty women panellist. Ann would win two Emmys and Fannie would write books. the stupid fat comments all the time toward the other women Richard would correct Fannie on her spelling and would later keep it up not nice..

In the audience match the question was Trench blank. The first two celebrities gave their answers. Richard was called on for the 3rd spot. He went on stalling for quite awhile then Richard finally said Trench hand. Immediately it sounded stupid and everyone cracked up! It went on for several shows making fun of his Trench hand answer.

You know some of this stuff just isn't even funny. "When he saw the menu, he whispered to Mary, 'don't order any blank.'" What a dumb question. I was impressed that Brett and Fannie said order no food.
