18:11 It's spelled YARMULKE, but Nipsey gets an A+ for effort and hilarity. 18:30 How would you describe a yarmulke? _"It's a half a bra!"_ Lol! R.I.P. To a real mensch and comedic genius ❤

What makes a bad guest panelist? In my opinion, it's not just that they don't match the contestant. It's that they don't understand their place in the game. There are 23 minutes of game play. If the guest panelist insists on interrupting and talking over the host over and over, it really impedes the game play. The regulars, whom we actually do tune in to see, get drowned out. Pat Harrington is an awful guest because he slows everything down with his constant interruptions. In the first five minutes of the show, we hear his voice 17 times; Brett's, 10 times (not shocking.) The rest of the panelists, 1-3 times. A few well timed quips may have been funny; repeated interruptions just come across as obnoxious. I can't help thinking that if Pat had shut up for one minute and concentrated he might have been capable of a match. This episode shows him at his worst. Richard Dawson spoke for all of us at 13:49 -ish when he told Pat, "You're not gonna last." Like many people, I have the same objection to Gary Burghoff, but also to a guest whom lots of people like -- McLean Stevenson. I feel he was very funny and talented, but his antic comedic style was just overpowering for a 23-minute game show and he tended to drown out the regulars.

You're talking like the point of the game is to answer the questions. The point of the show is comedy. I truly don't care if they match. If they did care, Patty Deutsch would never ever be a guest at all. I think I've seen her match a contestant exactly ONE time. Her answers were always insane.
@Observer-jw8wv
@Observer-jw8wv 3 жыл бұрын
@@katherynemero4118 As you continue watching, you'll see Patty matching quite a lot more than once, but yes, clearly she is there for the whacky/surreal/comedic factor, not for her prowess in delivering correct answers. There's a viewer on here who probably knows exactly how much she DOES match; maybe @Stephanie Lively will chime in. I respect your view, but I don't think it's the prevailing attitude. I think the show is a balance between the comedy and helping people win money. I'm pretty sure that most people who watch want both things to happen. You want to laugh, and you want to see people win. And people can't win the money if you don't match. Anyway, my point was really about GUEST panelists and what makes them effective or not. Pat Harrington was a poor choice as a guest panelist because he wants the camera on him. The audience doesn't care much about Pat Harrington; we're generally more interested in the regulars and semi-regulars.
@katherynemero4118
@katherynemero4118 3 жыл бұрын
@@Observer-jw8wv What you just said was "I respect your view, but I'm right and you're wrong." If it was true that they wanted contestants to win money, they wouldn't have changed the rules. Most contestants chose Richard Dawson to play in head to head. Whatever the reason, he was very good at it. Eventually, that's why he quit. They kept making it so the contestants couldn't choose him BECAUSE they didn't want to have to pay a lot fo money. So, I'm sorry but you're the one wrong about that. I also don't think Pat Harrington was as bad as everyone is saying. But Patty Deutsch was. I've watched a lot of episodes, and I feel like it was a waste to have her as a panelist. She isn't funny or witty. Her seat is wasted. They have to have someone on that is brilliant in order to make up for the waste of space that she occupies. That being said, if the panelists weren't funny, I wouldn't bother watching at all. They have fun. It's like watching "Whose Line is it Anyway?" The game is irrelevant.

I agree that Pat Harrington is an annoying jerk, Richard is visibly perturbed at his constant interruptions. I tend to blame the producers for a guest panelist’s boorish behavior. During a break, or between shows , one of the producers should have told Pat to cut the crap….in a more professional way of course!

Pat did match at last. But he’s a lousy panel member. Some celebrities just can’t be fun or humorous without a script. Many celebs didn’t last long on match game. They just either didn’t understand what was expected of them, or they weren’t able to do it! Fannie Flagg, Betty White, obviously Richard, and a few others really did it well. But most of the guests they had and just simply play the game. They weren’t very warm and likable. They didn’t mix in on the fun and laughter. That’s what the show was all about! I think MacLaine Stevenson lead to this program’s downfall. Look at his career. Except for MASH, which he quit(!), every show he went on failed! The man just wasn’t funny. He couldn’t relate to people. Neither could Bill Daily. He just didn’t know what to do! Both were failed replacements for Richard Dawson. They just never could replace Richard. But they added people who were terrible. They needed someone who had a smooth personality, was humorous and was likable like Richard. The show died a slow death. Even Gene ran out of enthusiasm in the last year!
