H/H match update: ... Today's action: Our champion cruises to her sixth victory! Today's audience match question: "Third ________ " (My thoughts: Base, Time's the Charm, Degree) The celebs: Richard (Base), Charles (Man Theme), Brett (World) The choice: Base The answers: Degree, Place, Base Quick recap of this contestant's H/H adventures: 1) Charles for $5,000, matched. 2) Richard for $1,000, matched. 3) Struck out on the audience board. 4) Charles for $1,000, didn't match (the contestant came up blank). 5) Brett for $5,000, matched. 6) ??? The majority of contestants who get second and third chances at the H/H tend to stick with one celeb, usually Richard, but sometimes others. (For example, one champion chose Isabel Sanford three times in a row in episodes 624 and 625.) But this champion is unpredictable! I can't recall anyone else ever matching all three regulars! I'm not even sure if any champion has ever matched three different panelists before, although that's not something I've kept track of. So it's really a lot of fun wondering who she'll call on this time! Back to Charles today! This is his second go this week and the fourth since 806. He's currently in a three-way tie with Betty and Fannie, so today's question will break that tie no matter the outcome. This time I went all the way back to episode 551 and CNR has only played 14 times (excluding today) in all those weeks! But, he matched 9 of those 14 times, which is an extraordinary 64.3%. This is his 57th attempt overall (he is the third most-chosen celeb after Richard and Brett, despite matching far more frequently than either of his two co-regulars). Today's H/H question: "Good and _______" (This one has a few good answers, I think. My first thought was "Good and Plenty." But I think "Good and Evil" might be more common. I'll stick with my first thought anyhow. Plenty.) The contestant has a Las Vegas poker player's face when the camera cuts to her. Charles is looking at Brett's suggestion(s). Apparently, whatever she wrote wasn't convincing enough, so he glances down at Betty to see if she's offering any advice. Apparently nothing there. He briefly has a defeated look and decides to write what I would guess is his own thought, but he's not sold. He looks over toward Brett again and seems to write a second answer. One last glance in Betty's direction before filing his response. Ding. The contestant says good and "bad." Now that I hear it, it sounds pretty good! I have no clue and no intuition if she's going to match Charles. Let's see... The camera cuts to Charles who is nonchalantly puffing on his cigar. Once again Charles proves he actually listens to the contestants by incorporating into his reveal the fact that she said she was going to use her prize money to take her husband to New York to see his family. His card says "Bad"! Charles scores his 29th H/H match today. (And pulls back ahead of Betty and Fannie in overall accuracy.) Here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Charles - 50.9% (29 wins in 57 attempts). TIE: Betty - 50.0% (18 wins in 36 attempts). TIE: Fannie - 50.0% (13 wins in 26 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Richard - 41.0% (204 wins in 497 attempts). Brett - 40.9% (27 wins in 66 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 819, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

I usually love Betty White in everything she does. And she was the favorite of one of my uncles. But Betty hiking Gene's pant legs was shtick that had gotten old a long time ago. She went the entire week of her previous appearance (a couple of weeks earlier) without doing it and I had hoped she had moved on, especially when she didn't do it the first two shows of this appearance. But here she goes again. Were there people actually encouraging her to do it? Simple minds are easily amused, it would seem.
