H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... This is now week 236 of our favorite classic game show (the show ends with week 291 and episode number 1455). These episodes were taped on February 18, 1978, and originally aired in mid- to late March of 1978. Our stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces, and this time they're joined by these three familiar bodies: ~~~Semi-regular Fannie Flagg sticks around for another week, her 75th (of 90). So far, Fannie has earned a 48.5% accuracy (16 wins in 33 attempts) in the head-to-head match. She's also the last celeb other than Richard to play a head-to-head, back in episodes 1127 and 1132. ~~~Mary Wickes is back to entertain for her 11th week (of 14 total). Mary last filled in some blanks during episodes 1126-1130. In her 50 shows so far, Mary has never once been selected to answer a H/H question. ~~~Last but not least, Gary Crosby returns for his second and final week on the panel. He made his debut in episodes 1051-1055 and was never chosen for a H/H question. King Richard was the unanimous choice for the H/H again last week, now making eight weeks in a row. He matched two of last week's six questions. Reviewing the past 90 weeks, Richard has played *396* times. Everyone else combined played *54* times. (Charles had 17 opportunities, Brett 13, Fannie 13, Betty 3, Lynn Deerfield 1, Gary Burghoff 1, Rosemary Forsyth 1, Nipsey Russell 1, Meg Bennett 1, Scoey Mitchell 1, Trish Stewart 1, and Marcia Wallace 1.) Percentage-wise, Richard has now answered *88.0%* of all the H/H questions during these past 90 weeks. Richard starts the week off with a very good track record, having matched 42.1% of his H/H questions, a bit behind Brett's accuracy score (42.3%) and well behind Charles's awesome score (48.6%). Of course, a contestant could also choose Fannie Flagg who also has an awesome track record (48.5%) when it comes to matching contestants in the head-to-head. But as we see pretty much week after week, the actual track records are either unknown to the contestants, or else they're ignored: virtually every champion seems confident that Richard is the best choice for a chance to win the big money. And so far, that's worked out well 343 of the 814 times Richard has answered a H/H question. Anyway, with only about 280 more shows to go, I'm determined to enjoy each and every one to the fullest, no matter what happens in the head-to-head! ~~~Today's action: Our champ needs to match all six stars just to achieve a tie and have a hope for a fourth go at the Super-Match. Nope. Today's "villainess" is Brett, but there were two villainous understudies waiting in the wings: Richard and Fannie also had non-matching answers... Three victories and $6,550! Not bad at all! *Today's audience match question: "________D"* (My thoughts: Vitamin, ABC, Maître) - Since this was a written poll (according to Gene), I kinda doubt enough people would put maître because it's too hard to spell! The celebs: Richard (I), Charles (Ph), Fannie (M) - Once again my answers are totally different from the panel's! (I think their answers will do better than mind on the board, though!) The choice: I The answers: Big, ABC (!!), 3- Well good gravy Marie! My answers turned out better than the stars' after all! - $250 vs ZIP! - And, this is the first audience match fail since 1151 and 1153. A sad start to the new champion's reign... No H/H question today... ~~~Here's our standing leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts). Charles - 48.6% (34 wins in 70 attempts). Fannie - 48.5% (16 wins in 33 attempts). (*)Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 42.3% (30 wins in 71 attempts). (42.2535%) Richard - 42.1% (343 wins in 814 attempts). (42.1375%) Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1176, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)

The contestant asking for an explanation made an awkward question absolutely painful. (Too bad Scoey Mitchell wasn't on the panel that week. Gene could've let him explain it to the contestant!) But kudos to Richard who managed to wring as much humor out of it as possible. Gene then failed miserably when he explained that they were a "Southern" group "famous for wearing white sheets." Yikes and yikes. They were active all over the country, and they were (in)famous for their crimes, not their attire.

Seeing the same celeb in the roster two weeks in a row always worried me, since they were often in rotation. So, seeing Fannie go back on rotation is refreshing... even if she had an ulterior motive.
