Paul Lynde was the biggest reason I watched Hollywood squares

I met him as a small girl, my father met him when Paul rode the Conch Tour Train in Key West, Florida. Paul and my dad became friends and every time Paul would come to town, he’d invite us four kids to go to the mini golf with him. He was truly our uncle Paul, God rest his soul!! Loved him, miss him dearly! 😢

What was classic and iconic about Mr Lynde was how he had a hilarious snappy answer to the question, perfectly timed for maximum laughs, but then would retreat into pensive thought to get the answer correct for the contestant. He was more often than not correct, but missed enough times that you could never say with certainty he knew the questions ahead of time. He was a comic genius. If you ever watch the old Match games, Richard Dawson would frequently give a very good impression of Lynde. Often imitated, but never duplicated.

It took the wind out of his sails for a few rounds when Connie Stevens failed to remember that he was in Bye, Bye Birdie. He answered the next few questions seriously, without trying to be funny. He bounced back with a vengeance, though. Knowing now about his insecurities and fears of being forgotten and a nobody, it must have crushed his soul a little for his biggest movie role to be forgotten by one of his co-stars on the same panel. He was a true trailblazer. If only he knew how influential he truly was.

That snarky and often self-deprecating delivery -- so often accompanied by thinly veiled references to his homosexuality -- was Lynde's trademark and just one of the things that set him apart from other TV comics of his day. A few of the genuine geniuses in comedy are ever appreciated fully and sadly, so often after their time. Fortunately there are those who are recognised in their prime, and Paul Lynde is definitely one of these. Famous for his "zingers" on the "Hollywood Squares" tv game show, he could be quick, sharp and extremely funny: for example, when asked in what state was Abraham Lincoln born, he responded with the same all of us are born in---naked and screaming! This was so typical of his focused responses and at the same time was very learned, especially in ancient history. He was celebrated and appreciated and now sorely missed.

After watching a biography of Mr. Lynde, it makes many of his reactions on a range of topics on this game show much more significant.. and no, not just on the gay thing. He certainly seemed to wear his heart on his sleeve in some ways, and with his insecurities and troubles, you can see a lot of the man himself in these moments from the show. Like so many comedians, he strikes me as a sad and injured character, despite money, fame, and success.

True....society shaped him when an alternative life style was ridiculed and not accepted. Combined with the fact that regardless of his immense talent and drive to be successful, he never achieved his goal. All of this produced a sad, bitter man. I loved him. He was so hilarious. I'm just sorry he couldn't have had a happy life.😢

On that note, you can only imagine that many folks come to Hollywood to find their voice to express such troubles. I hope one day these combined voices will create more meaningful change in the world, especially as scandals have broken there in the last five years.

@@lucyannacraig9764 Him never reaching his goal had little to do w his personal life. There no way his “characters” would ever be leading man types… they were all overly goofy. Also, he had several shows which were HIS, but they never hit it big. His talent was always the “hilarious guest star” type.

DAVID WOLF THIS ENTIRE PRESIDENCY, THE NEPOTISM, SELLING US OUT TO THE RUSSIANS IS SURREAL. NOT SURPRISED ABOUT AMBASSADOR TO THE VACTICAN, TRUMP IS A FRAUD WHO HAS NEVER READ THE BIBLE OR THE CONSTITUTION. HE USED THOSE DOCUMENTS TO CON HIS FLAG WAVING RACIST VOTERS; WHO BTW DON'T SEE THE IRONY THAT THEIR HERO TRUMP, A DRAFT DODGING COWARD, GOT 5* DEFERRMENTS TO AVOID SERVING IN OUR MILITARY, PATRIOTIC MY ASS. TRUMP IS A DISGRACE TO OUR NATION AND THE WORLD. ALSO, AS A SIDEBAR, THE ONLY CATHOLIC IN HIS ADMINISTRATION, PRESS SECY, SEAN SPICER, WAS NOT ALLOWED TO MEET THE POPE ON THAT TRIP;. TRUMP IS AN EVIL, SOUL--LESS VINDICTIVE MONSTER. UNFIT TO SERVE AS DOG CATCHER, LET ALONE SENDING OUR CHILDREN TO WAR AS HE HIMSELF DODGED SERVICE TO OUR NATION. SORRY FOR LONG REPLY. IF REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS DON'T IMPEACH, IT WON'T HAPPEN, THEY ARE ONLY ONES THAT CAN BRING ABOUT IMPEACHMENT. TOO MANY BERNIE SUPPORTERS WHO DIDN'T VOTE BECAUSE THEY HATED HILLARY, ARE WHY WE ARE IN THIS MESS, BESIDES TRUMP'S IGNORANT UNEDUCATED RACIST BIRTHERS.
