H/H match update: ... Today's action: (In the final moments of the prior program, the champion won his second game and scored $500 on his second audience match. So we start right off today with his second head-to-head match.) When we last saw our champion, he was about to choose his H/H match celebrity. What a cliffhanger! What suspense! (I'm kidding. We all know he's going to choose Richard again.) This is now Richard's 15th consecutive attempt at the head-to-head, and he's matched five times so far during that extended run. Today's (first) H/H question: "Please don't _______" (My first thought is "eat the daisies." -- It was a 1960 Doris Day film and an NBC sitcom from 1965-1967. Nothing else really comes to mind.) Richard writes a fairly long answer, so I'm thinking he may have said the same thing. The contestant gives the predicted answer. The audience applauds. (I still can't think of an alternate answer, so I have to bet we'll have another match today.) Yes, indeed. Richard scores his 193rd H/H match today. ~~~ After winning $11,200, our champion is defeated. But there's enough time left today for a new champion to have a go at over $5,000 in the Super-Match. Today's audience match question: "Kissing _________ " (My thoughts: Cousin/s, Bandit, ??) The celebs: Richard (Cousin), Charles (Bandit), and Brett (Booth -- via Joyce!) The choice: Cousin The answers: Game, Disease, Cousins A new champion, but I have a feeling we'll be seeing the same celebrity once again... Yawn. This is now Richard's 16th consecutive attempt at the head-to-head, and he's matched six times so far during that extended run. Today's (second) H/H question: "Salad _______" (My first thought is "bowl." But then there's fork. I like bowl better.) Richard answers quickly. It looks like a short response. The contestant gives the predicted answer, but the audience doesn't sound too thrilled. They seem to be rooting for salad dressing. (Salad days is another good answer.) Well, as I often say, it doesn't matter what the audience thinks for this question. It's up to Richard now. He says "Bowl"! Richard scores his 194th H/H match today. ~~~Here's the updated tally of celebs who've scored two H/H matches in a single show, and Richard's done it several times now: (The celebs are listed in order of the first episode they achieved a double H/H match. Unfortunately, I didn't start noting this achievement until episode 111, so it's possible there was an instance prior to episode 111...) Charles scored 2 H/H matches in episode 111. Jo Ann Pflug scored 2 H/H matches in episode 148. Richard scored 2 H/H matches in episode 193, 218, 622, 654, 757, 777. Fannie scored 2 H/H matches in episode 332. Gary scored 2 H/H matches in episode 412. ~~~Alright, here's our updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Charles - 51.0% (27 wins in 53 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (18 wins in 36 attempts). Fannie - 47.8% (11 wins in 23 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Richard - 41.7% (194 wins in 465 attempts). Brett - 41.3% (26 wins in 63 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 777, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

Britt Jackson was later ruled ineligible for unknown reasons, as the closing credits said in the 2 episodes that followed this one. The credit's didn't mention Britt by name.

I don't get the "first mistake since the World's Fair" line -- is that a dated reference, or a reference specific to that particular panelist? (Edit: I know what a World's Fair is; I just don't understand why 'first mistake since the World's Fair' is funny.)
