Charles Richey Dawson and Combs made that show. once Louie Anderson took over, and ever since, The Feud has felt more like a low-rent, third tier network show. Goodson and Todman must be spinning in their graves.

Chad Gervais Amen! I honestly can’t watch the newer episodes. Family Feud for me is 1976-1995. I don’t care if Steve Harvey has brought the ratings up. The show is more like “Family Sleaze” today. ABC should have never moved Family Feud to 11:30 where it was going up against the 2nd half of “The Price Is Right” on CBS.

An amazing man, and so underrated, he would have been an excellent inpirational speaker. This episode/clip is wonderful, but it's not complete without watching "Richard Dawson's Unaired Speech (1985)"...Richard was upset because he forgot to read a very special card in his pocket on-air. ...if the clip doesn't touch your heart - check your pulse! Personally, i consider Richard to be the best overall game show host of all-time. Mr. Richard Dawson - A True Legend

@@TheTerrylwg Sadly, that seems to be the way a lot of TV is going; hence the reason why years ago my wife and I "cut the cord" and have never looked back. "Comedy" shows, sitcoms, game shows - it's like going back in time to hear sniggering little boys or teens in the school locker room - and you'd think most people would have outgrown that in the years following. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be the case.

Richard Dawson didn't truly quit on the first run: he didn't want to do the daytime network Feud and only wanted to do the nighttime syndicated Feud only, however Viacom decided to end production altogether. In essence Dawson's attitude at that time, combined with Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune being more popular, caused Family Feud's first run to come to an end.

Such a shame that when he says at the end, "I never thought I'd ever be part of something where I could be touched by so many people and be able to touch them." that the audience takes it the wrong way. He meant it as being touched emotionally.

Richard was always good to me and I thank him, Mark Goodson and Howard Felsher for what they did for me and my family. Sure I went on to work on other shows but, there's nothing like your first. 🤟 P.S., Just a little side note, a story I once heard. While :Richard was visiting in Las Vegas, a White woman came up and asked Richard "How can you stand kissing all those N's"? (N word), Richard quickly replied, "I have no problem kissing Black people, it's C#nts like you I can't stand!" That is just one of the many stories that made me proud to work with Richard.

@@Lava1964 also Richard Dawson was growing tired of the grueling taping schedules, as both the ABC daytime version and the nighttime Syndicated version was being done at the same time. Dawson wanted to quit production altogether, but then offered a compromise to do one more season only for Syndication (much like Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune today). Instead Viacom and Mark Goodson decided to end production altogether. Later, when Goodson revived Family Feud in 1988 for CBS Daytime (as a lead-in for TPIR) and nighttime Syndication, he decided to bring comedian Ray Combs in as host. After Mark Goodson's death and due to declining ratings, Jonathan Goodson (Mark's son) attempted to salvage the nighttime Syndicated version by getting rid of Ray Combs and bringing back Richard Dawson, who in truth was not the same as his 1976-1985 self due to his second marriage (he no longer kissed the female contestants; the Clarence Thomas accusations during his SCOTUS confirmation hearings and Bill Clinton's woes with Gennifer Flowers and Paula Jones) may have also contributed), but it was due to world events, including the O.J. Simpson murder case, that ended the second run.
