I feel sorry for the contestants that come on and promptly get beat. They're only there for like ten minutes.

End-of-week H/H match recap: ... ~~~Today's action: Well, $14,750 wasn't enough! Brett's "fly swatter" carries our champion to her sixth (!) victory. Today's audience match question: "James _________ " (My thoughts: -- The name ones are the hardest. What actors or personalities were top of mind in 1976? James Dean? James Mason? James Ford? James Garner?) The celebs: Charles (Dean), Fannie (Cagney), and Richard (Caan) -- Also, Gene snuck his own hint in (but no one seemed to pick up on it) when he told an indecisive Fannie that she could "garner" a lot of popularity by naming the right actor! The choice: Dean The answers: Garner, Dean, Bond -- (Duh! That never occurred to me!) Recapping the champ's prior H/H matches: 1) Richard, no match. 2) Charles, match. 3) Charles, match. 4) Struck out on the audience match, no H/H. 5) Charles, match. 6) To be determined... It's Charles again. Looking back, he has matched all five of his five most recent attempts. Today's H/H question: "Sunday __________ " (This one has a lot of possible choice. My first thought was "Sunday in the Park with George" -- given Charles is a stage actor and director. But I need to go for something broader and more generic. Sunday school? Sunday paper? I guess I'll say Sunday School.) "This is just a shot in the dark," our champion says, "I'm gonna say 'Sunday papers.'" -- Indeed. With this sort of question, there doesn't seem to be a clear-cut definitive answer (trivia: Brett was the first person to use the phrase "definitive answer" on the program, back in 546). Sunday paper(s) is a valid choice (I have to say that since I thought of it too). Charles offers Brett a sly smile. Maybe she had suggested that and he didn't take it? Or maybe he'd suggested it and she shook her head? He said "morning," which sounds like a good answer to me! No match today. The three-way tie that was broken after just one day is back after just one more day! Charles, Fannie, and Betty are now all once again tied with a 50% overall accuracy rating! What an amazing group! ~~~End-of-week H/H match recap: Despite a missed opportunity when the champion struck out on the audience match on Wednesday, we had 5 H/H questions this week, 3 of which were successful: Richard 0/1, Charles 3/4 (It's quite rare for Richard to only play one H/H in a week. I had to go back to 641-645 to find another such week, and that was the only one as far back as 496-500, when I began keeping more detailed records.) Well, I'd long been hoping for a celeb to choose Charles, and wow, did my wish ever come true! This was certainly Charles's week to shine, and shine he did! Beyond three consecutive H/H matches, he came up with the #1 audience match answer six times in a row, and again today after hitting the middle answer last time. For the head-to-head match, Charles's accuracy first hit, and then surpassed 50%, which is utterly amazing. But he remained ahead of Betty and Fannie for only one episode before today's miss put him back in a three-way tie with the wonderful Betty and Fannie, and nearly 10 percentage points ahead of his co-regulars Brett and Richard. Ironically, the contestant had chosen Richard for her first H/H match. Had they matched, she may well have stuck with Richard the whole week... My second wish, however, didn't come true. Jo Anne Worley "retires" from Match Game '7x without getting a final shot at the H/H. I have to say I'll miss her as she now becomes the first leader board celebrity to be marked with an "(*)" indicating that her stats are complete. (Trivia note: Looking at the current celebs on the leader board, the next "retirement" won't occur until episode 1135, which will mark Jo Ann Pflug's final appearance.) Now it's up to Joyce Bulifant to break the long-standing tie with Jo Anne Worley. Or, more accurately, it's up to a future contestant to choose Joyce and break that tie. In my opinion, matching 3 out of 4 times in the H/H is an achievement, and both Jo Anne and Joyce deserved to have been chosen more often. Finally, Ron Palillo completed his first week without being chosen for the H/H match, but he did an above-average job matching contestants in the regular game, and in my opinion, is a good fit for the show, and I'm looking forward to his future four weeks. I think he'd be a good bet for a H/H match! ~~~Looking ahead to next week, our three regulars will be joined by one familiar face and two new panelists, namely: -----Semi-regular Patti Deutsch, whose last appearance was three weeks ago. She is 1 for 2 in the head-to-head match, and this will be her 22nd week of 42 total. -----Tom Poston, in his first of two weeks in the #1 seat (his second and final week will be 1116-1120). -----And Barbara Sharma, the latest in a number of recent celebs to spend a single week in the #4 seat, never to return again. ~~~Finally, here's the updated leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (Note: An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (Note: For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 83.3% (5 wins in 6 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Charles - 50% (24 wins in 48 attempts). TIE: Betty - 50% (17 wins in 34 attempts). TIE: Fannie - 50% (10 wins in 20 attempts). Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 41.4% (24 wins in 58 attempts). Richard - 40.3% (167 wins in 414 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 710, excluding the lost/missing/damaged episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, and 645. (As per MatchGameProductions, these episodes "are nowhere to be found and also aren't in the Goodson/Todman Library. Sadly, looks like they are lost forever!")

I’m surprised that this Jo Anne Worley’s last week on the show I definitely thought should be on it more often then she was. I know she was on it a lot in 74 but I really thought she would be on a lot during the whole duration of the show. Since she is a exceptional game show player!!!

Well this week, even tho it was slow, Charles managed to wrestle the title away from Richard to win the week giving away 14,500 dollars in head to head, but he lost his perfect head to head streak :0(, and audience match matches with 15 matches for the regulars. Ron won the week for the semi regulars with 12 matches.

I was shocked that Richard didn't say "James Bond," but then he and James Caan were friends. Certainly a great actor, but from the average studio audience perspective, which one is more famous? And James Brown? Forget it. These audiences skew heavily older and whiter.

this was an awesome week! charles won this week by giving away $14,500 and he was the only one to give any away. He also won with the most matches at a total of 13. Ron came in second with 11, then Richard with 9, Brett and Fannie tied with 8, and Jo Anne with 7 matches.

You can count on one hand the hot looking guy-contestants for an entire year. I find that really odd for a daytime show watched mainly by women.
@eddieafterburner
@eddieafterburner Жыл бұрын
I’ve thought the same thing, along with the fact that you can literally count on one hand the number of times two male contestants appeared simultaneously throughout the 8 years the show was produced. We’ll never know whether this was intentional by the producers or that the gameplay/format simply didn’t attract or appeal to males.
