For someone known to have a strong ego, Richard is wonderful at self-deprecating humor. He makes fun of himself at 5:28 for not having an answer. Compare to Jack Cassidy, whose ego was apparently pretty fragile. He really had to puff himself up constantly.

If a star made it to this level they have a "healthy ego". MatchGame has had its share of ups and downs and the stars of the shows wouldn't have any input on the major decisions. That didn't mean they didn't have feelings and at time they got bruised. Viewing the show 50 years later we can pick apart every part of the in slow motion. Many times reading clues incorrectly.

I don't think it was her job to be funny. The others were funny but needed an easy target for their barbs. Brett's purpose was to bait the others. Without her, everyone was polite and the show was bland.

I could not agree more in that I find Brett soooooo annoying. It is distracting from the show to me. Sometimes it seems there is a mental deficit there but I have no idea.

Her role on the show is to do precisely that! The pre-Brett episodes are amusing in a standard, nice, polite way but ultimately rather bland. She brought much of the irreverence, the off topic rants, and was the source of the affectionately catty banter among the panelists....all signature elements of MG that made it stand out from the pack and enjoy such a long run. And so Many of the jokes over the years were at her expense.... She put herself out there to be an easy target for the others. And obviously for audiences as well.
