Portable painter sells expansion pans that take advantage of the travel brush space-- your 12 become 18. I love the design.

I've seen them, yes, and would LOVE them, but I can't find them anywhere to buy!!! If you know somewhere that mails to the UK without too insane postage, I'd love to know!

I think you've done a great job downsizing for this trip! I have a difficult time planning what to take on trips and usually take too much. I laughed out loud at your altoid tin. That would be something I'd do too. All the trouble of thinking about something and humming and ha-ing, to go with something else 😂 glad you found something that works for you. Have an amazing time! I spent years convinced there must be some great improvement on the old tin palettes. I finally gave in - the oldies are brilliant - esp as they can be modified, removing pins to separate one wing, or removing the paint tray to have even more mixing area. And they are cheap. But I confess to having a generous collection of other palette experiments squirreled away.

Yes, I have quite a few, but usually end up with the tin one in this video! Though I do like my Portable Painter Micro for a limited palette.

Haha, thanks! I just love faffing around with colour!! I could sit and play with palettes all day - I think some of it is just procrastinating doing any art because I'm scared it will be bad!

New to your channel, just subscribed. You have put together a nicely varied travel art kit. The portable painter is great for hiking, all you need to add is a small sketchbook, a pencil, a water brush or travel brush. I would take a small pouch for just these few supplies for a lightweight hiking kit. Cosmetic pouches are great for this. I like your little jam jar for your pencil sharpener. That would hold a good amount of shavings if necessary. I keep mine in a mini Altoids tin, which holds a few shavings. I also keep my kneaded eraser in one. They are compact and easy to carry. Enjoy your time in Nepal!

I know... it's a bit OTT!! I've been using inside the lid just as it is, to make washes, but it's been a bit small. I'm not very good at minimalism! 😭

If you find the escoda 10 optimo too heavy with the metal piece on the end, buy a straw or brush protector tube from Jackson's and stick that on the end. Cut to size of course. That's what I do. Ruth.

That's clever! I was doing some looser painting yesterday, where it felt more natural to hold the brush further back, and I enjoyed it a lot more, so I think it will be OK.

It's a lovely kit, but are you going on a hiking excursion? Because if you do, you are going to regret taking that much with you. I often do backpack traveling and I'm a professional artist. My kit is basically 1 mechanical pencil, 1 eraser, 1 fountain pen with black ink and 12 colors in a bijou box with an additional mixing palette, 1 travel brush and two small cups with lids for the water. I get you want to do mixed media, but honestly, when traveling you get creative with more limited supplies. This looks more like regular studio supplies. I think I have that amount of colored pencils in my studio. In any case, have fun on your Nepal trip :)

Arghh!!!... thank you for your comment! This is my first trip where I'll be taking art supplies, and I'm starting to suspect you are right! I'm very torn! The problem is, there's a possibility I'll be on my own for a week in one place with nothing much to do (it's all dependent on how my hip co-operates), so I'd absolutely love to have all this stuff! I also only have to carry this, plus my food and water for each day (we have Sherpas) - do you think that would make a difference?

@@helencryer Maybe take a few e-books on your phone and some music and you're good to go. I hike a lot in the mountains (just European ones though), it's nice to be lighter :) you can take some colored pencils, but maybe just 6 (split primary) so you have some variety, but I would not bother to take much more. You can already do all the colors with your watercolor selection :) and truthfully having less is going to be nice as you can focus on the art more than on what to use for it.

Love the colours you’ve chosen for all your supplies… that’s such a beautiful swatch sheet! ❤ I think the switch to a different palette was a wise decision. I have an altoid tin of pans and only use it when I’m going to have another palette with me that has mixing space. Palette paper does in a pinch, but it’s just not the same. When I cut down bits of paper to use in my altoid tin, it’s to use in addition to another mixing space (not in lieu of). Mixing space is one of my bigger concerns when I get a travel kit ready since there’s no point in having a lovely mixing palette of colours, if you don’t have a spot to mix them 😂. I’m anxious to try my portable painter micro for mixing space and a water container. I have the little double-metal pot similar to yours, but I find that mine leaks out just tiny drops at a time, so I can’t trust it (the shape of mine is slightly different from yours). Notturno is one of my favourite A Gallo colours! Love that you get to take extra colours now! Seeing your small Caran D’Ache tin reminded me that I have a couple of small pencil tins from cheap “dollar store” pencil sets. I think I’ll give those pencils to my son and use them for a Blackwing and a couple of pastel pencils. Might need to buy a tiny sharpener. I’ve spent way too much time thinking about art supplies to pack, rather than clothes 😂.

Oh that's good to hear you think it's a good idea. I'd love to try the portable painter micro too! (I basically just want to play with ALL the art toys! I know I'm not a proper artist, because I think I only paint to justify owning all the nice things 😬) Notturno is gorgeous, and I'm not even a purple fan. I've not thought about clothes or anything else yet, other than remembering to get my immunisations up to date!

@@helencryer Haha… I’m the same, I love collecting all the pretty supplies! (Hence my low-buy this year, I did FAR too much collecting last year and I need to justify having it by actually USING it and not just buying more 😂. I know buying them brought me joy, but I think I was a little too joyful in 2022 😊… this year, I’m seeing just how much I already have when I rummage through my art drawers/cupboard.)

Did you switch out any of the watercolors in your pan set? Looking at these I would probably add in another yellow, maybe yellow ochre cause I use a lot of it 😂

I haven't changed any yet! I've used the palette quite a bit now, mainly for landscapes, and it is working pretty well! I tend to use the Quin gold instead of yellows. I'm still a novice watercoloured though, so still looooaaaads to learn!

In theory we'll have quite a lot of down time on the trip - we've had to build time in, in order to try and avoid altitude sickness. Though I may well just spend the time chatting instead! 😂

It's a lovely hobby in its own right!! The sheet is just generic clear sticky back plastic (if you put that into a search, it will show up - it usually has squared backing paper on it and comes in big rolls).
