Simply put the various pigments in one little half pan and make these yourselves. Test them first of course! But I’ve done this with several mixes I love now and it works beautifully. Like schmincke shire green. So expensive and I use it so much I put that one in a full pan. Perfection.

I could see myself using some of these in nature paintings and buildings, as I said, I prefer granulating over non-granulating, it always gives a bit more dimension , e.g. the pinks and oranges for mediterrean cityscapes, the purples for sunsets...

Amazing swatch season!!! I'm not sure how Holbein made fugitive pigments Lightfoot but I'll be interested in seeing someone doing lightfasr testing for all the Holbein granulating colors...Anyway great video, thanks for sharing ❤
@Mmmmagu6 ай бұрын
Thank you for the swatching session! I personally don't trust Holbein's lightfastness rating - they use their own scale so it's hard to even compare to blue wool scale or anything we have in Europe. I just assume all Holbein paints are to be considered not lightfast. Which I accept and happily paint with them :D
@wyloecksketches6 ай бұрын
Oh, I did not know they use their own rating system... That might explain the Quin. Opera being lightfast in their opinion :-) - Thanks for that!
@lindyashford77446 ай бұрын
Tbh, all manufacturers produce colours that are not lightfast, I am sure Far Eastern artists will be just as aware of this as western artists, there is nothing suspect about this, a whole lot of artists around the world make art for reproduction both as fine art and for commercial/graphic purposes too, it blurs the edges of how and why colour is utilised, having things that will last centuries is not a factor for many. Personally I do want my work to at least see the year out though, so anything made with these will not be sitting on my window sill in the sun.
@EvaArt-ud6gwari6 ай бұрын
I would never paint with these not lightfast paints. Shame on Holbein for fooling artists saying they are lightfast. Also there is no need for all these mixed pigments making clean color mixing impossible. I want just single, permanent and highly pigmented paints in my palette. Just a marketing ploy. Since Holbein created “opera” with dye it’s been downhill ever since. The name is part of it. Some of these fade FAST! 😱

very useful to see an actual paint out of these. i have only seen the holbein instagram images. which seem to show almost impossible depth of colour and colour separation. i would be interested to know... have you seen these images, and - having now had real world use of the paints - if you think that amount of colour separation could be achieved? thanks for producing this.
@wyloecksketches6 ай бұрын
Hi - I'm so glad you liked it, and found it useful. I have indeed seen Holbein's instagram posts on these colors, and I have to say, the vibrancy of the colors really is spectacular, but the color separation is not at all what I was able to achieve. Perhaps I need to re-do the swatching and give the paints bigger boxes and more water to separate in... A more wet-in-wet swatching might be a good idea...
@davejohnson53656 ай бұрын
@@wyloecksketches thanks for your reply, I agree on your points about bigger area, and more water. Also looking again at the Instagram images, in each case holbein appear to have diluted a very large amount of paint in a bowl containing a large amount of water. This may also be a clue as to how they got some way towards their separation results, although it is a very expensive method to test out in the real world. Still not convinced that y159 can be separated so cleanly from a mix containing bk6 and b16 though - as in their hazy moon yellow photo. All v intriguing though.

@@aleidadiaz2261 I may be wrong on that. The point is they are pigments and Holbein is known to be a super high quality professional brand and they use dyes with some of the colors, plus pigments. Shocking. You’re right it’s still expensive. I forgot I paid that much. For tighter budgets I recommend buying same high quality pigments and pouring them into the same pan to make it yourself. I’ve been doing that and it works fabulously. I can replicate my faves easily and it’s more versatile to have the separate pigments for more varied use. I like my desert mix more than the schmincke! And I’ve had to “fix” a few of these for my taste. But it is a fun palette 🎨😄
