At its core, mathematics is made up of axioms: statements that we assume to be true. However, we also see that mathematically precise patterns and relationships exist in nature, and humans simply use mathematics as the tool to describe them. So, was mathematics invented or discovered? During Alex Nappo’s TEDx Talk, prepare to take a step back from the tedious algebra and dread of calculus you may be accustomed to and experience the beauty of the intersection between mathematics and philosophy. Alex Nappo has always been interested in mathematics, competing in the AMC 10 and 12 high school mathematics contests, attending the Westchester Math Circle, completing summer courses at NYU’s Courant Mathematics Institute, and tutoring local students. In his free time, he is a guitarist in two bands, plays baseball, illustrates, and runs The Masters School’s Chess Club. As he did when creating a statistical model for Masters’ recreational basketball club, Alex seeks to spread his joy for mathematics and make it more accessible to others. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
