Ooo! I love when math people talk about their research like this. Also REUs are awesome, thanks for volunteering. Also also what software did you use for this presentation? The whole movement and animations are really appealing.

Thanks! I just used my normal video editing software, final cut pro, for this.

@Aditya Khanna I've seen some pretty intricate prezi presentations before, so I'm sure something like that is possible 😅

Nathan, Thanks for sharing the research and links to learn more. When I first saw math and logic symbols used in a lecture I looked around for books describing how they are used. This paper is a bit of a Rosetta Stone to what I was looking for. Indeed most of your work is a Rosetta stone for those of us still in undergrad studies. Happy Holidays.

Hey, this text is going to be long, I'm a graduate in pure mathematics from a Nigerian University, we've not been exposed to research work in mathematics and I wish to do a research work in lie algebra, I did a reading project on that...so I think I can continue with it, but to be fank I don't really know what to specialize in, I do really want to get my PhD, why? Because I really want to solve some of the unsolved math problems out there....the challenge is I don't have a research experience, what will you advice me to do if I were your friend? And how can one get research papers to be reading for growth if possible?
@CHALKND3 жыл бұрын
I actually did a Q&A video recently where I talked a bit about a similar situation. In many ways, the gap between undergraduate mathematics and phd level research mathematics is pretty large and many programs take this into account when admitting students. Some programs will admit masters students (even if they already have a masters) and then let them move up to the phd program given they can pass the phd qualifying exams too. This would need to be discussed with the graduate advisor in the department in question as some not all schools allow this. So not having research experience, although it may keep you from the "prestigious schools" (which there are a HUGE list of reasons not to go to a school based on prestige alone anyway) will not keep you from pursuing a phd with a research focus in your field of interest. For reading research papers for growth, I would recommend starting with graduate level material in your field of interest, and then identify what things in the field excite you the most before starting to look for papers. For example, if you like group theory, and you enjoyed the arguments and ideas surrounding nilpotent groups then start with nilpotence and the ideas surrounding nilpotence instead of just with "group theory" or "abstract algebra". Weirdly enough, mathematics is one of the few subjects where wikipedia is good for breadth of material which can help in finding out about related ideas, and then google scholar is a good place to start searching for more depth in a subject if you don't have access to a school's library system. For more recent works that are of relative academic rigor but may not be published yet, the arxiv or researchgate are good places to look around. Hope this helps!

@@CHALKND how common is data science now for math phd's as compared to like academia ?
@CHALKND3 жыл бұрын
@@Math-Tulane not entirely sure, but I suppose it would be uncommon. Most folks that I know that do data science now were more statistics focused and either had a absolute ton of statistics background from undergrad or went into masters/phd programs specifically for data science. Applied mathematics may have an easier time, but statistics is definitely at the core of the field.
