One of synth manufacturing giant Korg’s lesser-known models, the Korg Trident, produces some of their most unique sounds. Released in 1980, the polyphonic synthesizer is notable for its three independently programmable sections-Synthesizer, Brass and Strings-and its 8 voices. Our resident synth expert Mathew Jonson digs into one of his favourite vintage synths to share more about its pads and prowess, here on Telekom Electronic Beats TV.

That vintage sound that cannot be recreated by any modern analogue synth, it's pure magic!

This is a magical synth. If you watch closely you see that our presenter has it hooked up via one mono out cable only. In fact this thing has three individual outs (one for each section) which obviously can be panned seperately. Thats when things become really cinematic. Pity they didn't do that here, it is quite impressive.

Never heard of this until I downloaded full bucket's emulation a few days ago. My god that vst sounds HUGE. Almost real. And I can see why when the real thing is this awesome. Damn korg, where's the mini/reissue lol

I've ran mine into an alesis quadraverb guitar processor for years to add stereo delay and reverb etc.. I have a Line 6 Firehawk pedal now and realized I should run it through there.. Some real nice ambient reverbs and delays... Ooooo going to do that now.. :) Thanx for the video, even though it's a niche product... Cheers! Seeing how this synth works makes me realise how it could be reverse engineered by stacking 3 synths. Once you know the kind of sounds each section creates it can be simulated.

mark 303 ... For sure. The Trident and the ARP Quadra were both exactly that: literally multiple synthesizers in a box. Before OB 4-voice, Jupiter 4 and the Prophet 5 kicked of the era of envelope-per-voice synths, there were a few of these that put in one box string machines, divide-down poly synths and (in the Quadra) maybe a paraphonic lead synth, all wired to one keyboard with some sort of split and layer capability. They make interesting layers but have limitations in the voice architecture. Cool period pieces.

I'll be honest - that's part of what I think makes the Polysix look so good. KORG is just plastered on the back in big bold letters. Same thing is true of my Yamaha SK-30. I really like those big fonts on the back of these old synths.

Differences between Trident mk I and mk II: mk II has 32 patch memories (vs 16). Saved sounds can be edited. mk II has a separate Filter Envelope in Synth section, and two extra Filter Key Tracking options mk I has three presets ("piano I, piano II and clav"), which are not included in the mk II mk II has 12 semitones pitch bend range; I *think* that mk I has 7 semitones. mk II has cooling baffles on the back Here's a mk II in action: soundcloud.com/luiscarloz/lost-years soundcloud.com/shotq/stormy-weather

A few of us on the forums reckon the mk1 sounds better. The insides were changed quite a bit on the MK2. Look like some components changed.
@LudvigC
@LudvigC 4 жыл бұрын
@@Howdy606 Possible I guess. Although I have owned both a mk I and a mk II and didn't notice any fundamental differences in sound. They definitely use the same SSM 2044 filter chips. Those (along with stretch tuning for the oscillators and the triple BBD lines in the Strings Ensemble effect) are what gives the Trident its character imo.
@Howdy606
@Howdy606 4 жыл бұрын
@@LudvigC There was a thread where members Clusterchord & Gilwe posted demos of there MK1 & MK2. Although both excellent demo's. quite a few of us remarked that the MK1 demo sounded better over all. (Perhaps the way they were recorded). I prefer the look of the MK1 also. Has MS knobs whilst the MK2 has Polysix style knobs.
