you cannot say you chose to be a slave if you didn’t rebel, things in life are not just black and white. They were also not in the position we are in today. They couldn’t read they had no access to information, they were literally ONLY taught to be slaves, and never knew of a life outside of it. Those that did run away were taught that there was a life other than slavery. You cannot choose when you are unaware that there are options to choose from. Also if you go by the black and white logic of everything is a choice, then you 100% also believe that a child being r**** is a choice because they didn’t say no.

@@123reletive123 Life indeed, is not binary. However, basic instinct is not compatible with slavery. This phrase that Kanye said, probably for this exact reason, is provoking. It isn't that anyone chose to be a slave, it's that once they found themselves in that position, they either chose to make the most of it, or reject it. A baby or child may not be capable of voicing their issue, but basic science has proven that even the youngest baby has an inherent sense of what is fair and what is not, what they like and do not. That example is not even remotely similar and completely ill thought out. Someone had to be the first to rebel. Someone had to be the first to teach themselves how to read against the wishes of their oppressor. Those that chose were not guaranteed/recorded to be in a more favorable position either. Same for many other historical figures of note. Not even to mention what they had to face once they made that choice, which is almost always guaranteed to be worse than if they had not. Which is why those that DID not, chose note to. Someone always has to choose differently to make change. Period. It isn't a slight against those who didn't choose, but to discount or equivalate the two is just preposterous. That those who chose did, is what makes them exceptional and worth note. They literally set aside/transcended their human instincts of self preservation and fear of death/repercussions to bring long term change to an untenable existential state. That is what drives true/long lasting progress that actually affects future generations, not just temporary or incremental change that may or may not benefit direct lineage.

The black communities in Europe probably have more influence and success now than we ever have had so far. My Grandparents and parents,RIP to all of them now, would have been astonished at what has happened since say 2001. First Black President. First Asian British Prime minister etc. I know Math has said he's been to the UK 🇬🇧 and had a great time here. Loved the fans, people. Perhaps he can travel here again soon. Math is thinking only one way, Van didn't get to finish his thought, but when teaching someone to read or knowing how to read could lead to your death, than that act (of learning or reading) is revolutionary. Van is right, it's a spectrum, no different than people of today. Some people are going to accept the situation and do nothing, some are gonna go from 0-100 and go all out, but most are in the middle, doing small, but significant things that may not seem revolutionary on its face, but in context of the time and the consequences, were extremely revolutionary. The fact that Math doesn't know if he is a descendant of slavery is enough for him to be quiet dare I say, get the vitriol some are rightfully giving him.

Math is forgetting that in slavery when you rebelled you got whipped for the first one and killed the second time. Im sure many slaves saw their family and friends try and were killed in front of them. Hard to build courage when you have to live that life and see those things happen. It's unrealistic to pick a time in history and say I would stand up for what I believe and not know what their day to day life was like

Math’s POV is so disrespectful and ignorant. Slavery is is way more than just plantations and picking cotton. It was an INSTITUTION. This conversation proves that Math is NOT QUALIFIED AT ALL to speak on our ancestors endurance of oppression. Rebellions were taking place in different ways, all throughout the period of slavery and wasn’t necessarily written about. Just because you don’t know the faces/names doesn’t mean they were okay with it and or chose it.

Math showed his true colors as a non-American slave descendent. This is exactly why there is a divide between Americans that are descendants of slaves and those of immigrant backgrounds. There is deep judgment and he finally showed his hand. Can even pointed out how other communities do not crap of their own tribulations like Black people do and was unmoved. Even proud to stand on this perspective. I was proud of Math’s ability to build a platform like this, but now I know the white supremacy structure will buy him out and reward him based on this episode alone. Worst part is some of the interviews have been awesome, but I can’t see him as my brother anymore and now see him as a Black American culture vulture of the worst kind. Cointelpro manifested through hip hop.

Education has failed us greatly. Hoffa had a choice not to get in the vehicle to go to prison he chose not to revolt and go on go. A mediocre rebel/rapper? Jay-Z doesn’t own poison he advertises to our community liquor openly touts itself on the establishments as spirits clearly the ones who bewitched this guy. I like the show but I’m done and 3/4 of Americans with slave ancestry must needs come with. The willful ignorance ends with this show.

Math I understand your point of view but I feel you are looking down on your ancestors .. What Van is ultimately saying is no other race of people who were enslaved would put down those who survived the horrific events of captivity. Yes there are those that stood out but to minimize even the smallest steps is out of pocket because if you understand anything in this life its the smallest steps that lead up to the greatest feats. Warrior mentality is good only when there is an even battlefield. Do you know how many slaves rebelled??? Do you know how many chair exists in the country with our ancestors hair and flesh? How many jars of testicles of our black men float on mantels of racist white people? How about the whitening of Mexico because it was too many of us who went south??? I need you to travel and read heavy.. look up home team history on youtube if you must
