Crush 3D Upsets Me

Crush is by far my favorite game of all time an incredibly creative puzzle platformer with lots of personality, yet still have to find a game that captivated me like crush has done. Loved the concept, and became obsessed with the idea of playing this game fully once I discovered on the demo eshop Remember looking at the game on KZbin waiting for the day I could finally get it and finding the psp original wondering why my game looked incredibly different to this one. Someone made a texture pack? Something like that? I didn’t at first and just went along until I found out the psp version. Went to play it and overall even if the 3ds version was the one I grew up with, I still find the psp one to be the better version. The 3ds version felt incredibly rough the edges and overall like a half baked product compared to the original. Like parts of levels now thanks to removed gameplay mechanics feel kinda just incompleted and kinda lame to play on? Like you said the over the frying pan now feels awkward to even get out of the starting position, chunks of levels feel like have no purpose New gameplay physics of course now break the game to now a ridiculous point, to the point that even playing causally one can find them. (I never knew how to beat the 3rd level of nursery legitimately when I played this as a child) and I’m not sure if you can replicate this on the psp version, but someone I managed to rotate a roller over the y axis on the second to last level making it float awkwardly over a switch breaking the level completely who knows if they have broke any other part of the game like this. And my biggest grip with this new take was the overall story. The original presentation aside felt actually incredibly personal, you wanted to knew more about Danny’s past and what actually made him an insomniac, he was actually really relatable as his issues were ones a lot of people could had suffer from allowing the audience to connect with him. This new story feels less involved, even if the stakes overall are higher, the lack of involvement of Danny or the profesor as he just goes in “a journey” Danny goes from “Omg I’m trapped” To “Omg I’m trapped” By the end of the game. And what makes it more frustrating is that this game tackles ideas that with the new setting may be incredibly interesting. (Spoilers for the 3ds end game) I love the idea of giving crush a more involved role in the game as the original she was just a device to move the plot forward with small implications she was an sentient being. But man…what they did with her. 10 year old me actively frowned looking at this machine behave like a fan fic writer teenager and the reason for why she keeps Danny trapped was just confusing. Who’s her loved one? Why’s this machine in love with someone to begin with? Those questions never get answered nor leave to theory’s since there’s literally nothing to even base one on. Aside from one I read that she was talking about psp Danny to which I say….¿Que? And the ending, Ugh that tease of an ending, the original was already a big tease. You were worried about what happened to Danny. Was crush gonna kill him? Repeat the process till she finds a less “stupid” cause for his insomnia? But here? It implies that Danny hasn’t escaped her but even now the doctor is trapped with him as well. Overall if I have to give a plus to crush 3D are the extras. Not only the skins but the concepts you get to see are amazing with descriptions of them, you get to see how crush turned from the dark scenery and slowly morphed into this new look, it’s a fascinating experience. Overall crush 3D is a pretty conflicting product to me. I find it frustrating with everything it removed and basically stripping the original of one of its best aspects. But it’s also a competent product. One anyone can enjoy and have a good time with. (Man sorry for this waaaaaay to long of a comment 🫠)

MAN i totally forgot to even mention the ending. that upset me SO much when i first saw it, its so flat and boring compared to the original also that glitch you mentioned about the roller sounds REALLY weird, ill need to see if i can replicate it sometime.... to the lab i go! seriously though, this comment rules, the OG crush fan speaks their mind at last

okay im not even kidding, the reason why i have such a fond spot for crush 3d is because i knew it first. I didn't get a psp until way later, and this is the version i found about first, so in my head i've always gravitated towards it. the original just feels.....off to me after being so used to crush 3d's style for tens of hours, even though i do have a psp and have gotten p far in the original before dropping it again because adhd who knew! seeing as this game is from around 2012, it would put me at 9 years old when i learned about it, there was no way my 9 year old cis ass would look at og crush and think "wow this is a game i am going to background process in my brain for the next 11 years!" never got streetpassed on crush 3d though, i need to one day

From what I read, Crush 3D is pretty much an alternate universe version of the PSP version and they reference that somewhere in the ending I think? I dunno, I could never find definitive footage of either games without commentary...

Bro I played the demo of crush 3D til it ran out of uses as a kid. Had no idea there was a PSP version and I thought it was just some standalone random 3DS game. Years later the hshop allows me to own the full version.

See, I'm in that camp of people that played the 3DS demo as a kid, only looked at the full version years later, but never knew enough about the game to even realize there was an original version. It only took until this video somehow popping up in my recommended for me to know this. While I always thought the idea of the game was incredibly fascinating and nothing like I'd ever seen, I've always been super bothered by the presentation making it look like just another 3DS shovelware title, the kind you'd see on the eShop for like $2 that barely seems worth your time. So to hear that there's a version that solves that exact issue with far more personality, and near-identical gameplay with **more** mechanics at play, it pretty much guarantees I'll be checking out the PSP original as soon as I can. Hell, I only stopped playing Crush 3D because I got stuck, so the original helping even that just gives me all the more reason to. Suffice to say, this was a very interesting video that I hope more people can see. Also I just love hearing people talk at length about obscure games they love so like shit mate I may have to check out those other Crush videos while I'm at it

Back when I first got my 3ds I would play through so many of the little eshop demos and this game always looked interesting. However I never got to play it because I think they weren’t giving it out anymore for some reason?? Not sure why, but honestly having YT recommend me this video has finally put my curiosity for this game to rest. Didn’t even know this was originally a psp game, but damn I might have to give it a proper play through cause the concept alone seems really fun. Great video!

this may or may not be related, but there was an exploit in it (though I don't think it was ever exploited because it was around the time fusee gelee was released), so I think that's why it was removed.

I like crush 3d because the demo has an exploit that can crash the console and theoritically be used for an ACE exploit (basically if you fail a level too much it allows you to skip it, and you can skip the last level of the demo like that, which allows you to get an extra level, and if you try that again it tries to load a level that doesn't exist.)

I think crush 3D not having voice acting is probably more of a budget thing because I doubt they would want to put that much money into a game that is a sequel to a fairly obscure PSP title. Assuming it's out of laziness is kind of a bad faith criticism in my opinion

psp exclusives off the top of my head (though I did play some of them recently) : steambot battle tounament (actually pretty nice game, but the lack of vertical camera movement and the bad locking makes it quite annoying, especially on the last boss. it's also fairly short and took me an afternoon to finish) dissidia ff Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Portable (I had to search for the exact name because it's a mouthful.) invizimals (that eyetoy-ish game) wild arms (pretty nice trpg)
