Easily one of the coolest reloads I’ve seen
@josetrujillo23942 жыл бұрын
I put this right up there with ultimately inefficient but cool weapon system concepts that actually made it to the front line. Right next to swing wing aircraft and those naval missile launchers that reloaded vertically from a hole on the deck. Now that I think of it, a tank borne VLS system would be pretty cool, and not really necessary too!

Having served on an ITV (Improved TOW vehicle), the idea combining an ATGM and MBT isn't bad. The protection the MBT can give in comparison to an APC is real combat asset.
I found it interesting the FIST-V was made to look identical to the ITV. Also a big fan of the 11th Cav logo. Best one in the Army or any army.

I'd like to see new generations of tanks having ATGMs mounted to it to supplement the main gun, MGs and drones. It may not be practical, though. Maybe javelins, spike, etc.

Its less that the TD concept passed it by, but more the technology did. As mentioned ATGMs became miniaturized and ruggedized enough to be fitted to gun tanks and IFVs. But the "tank destroyer" never went away, it was just realized that MBT level armor wasn't necessary for the role, so it went to cheaper platforms like the BRDM. The IT-1 is kind of like the Soviet version of the M-60A2 or I guess the Raketenjagdpanzers. The last gasp of the old idea that a tank destroyer would have to square off against tanks in a gun fight. The TD evolved into light missile carriers and attack helicopters.

Matsimus: Thank You for taking up a subject, I consider of Importance! What is a tank destroyer and what is a tank destroyer? If we look at the Swedish S tank it was more of a tank destroyer than a tank. What was wrong with it was that it was tracked. It is a simple design proposition that there is an optimal ratio between the lenth of the supporting track and the with of the vehicle. Make it to long and you get a damned heavy monstrosity that cannot turn (or when turning clears out a city block and need heavy duty support to move at all (You can watch Sofileins latest videos for a perfect illustration of that point). Make the relationsship to short and the vehicle is directionally unstable at the slightest speed - it simply spins around at the slightest provocation. Now trust the Swiss (and turks) to come up with a solution: They make the rearmost wheels counter-steering below a speed of 20 km/hr. This gives the Piranha V 8*8 a very tight turning circle (necessary for the Swiss mountain roads)., In fact so tight that the whole vehicle has a turning cirle that is about the same radius as the turret on a reasonable sized tank gun. This leads us to the S-tank: Why not dispense with the turret all together? You can keep the vehicle (reasonably protected) undet 30 tons. Give the thing a road speed of 80 km/hr without needing to resurface the road afterwards. Use the suspension to regulate the elevation of the gun and the steering wheel to achieve the direction. Well, You don't get a Challenger on wheels, but pretty damned close with the L7 gun which nobody has called trash.

@@ravenouself4181 But what ground targets were they specifically designed to attack?
@dannyzero692 Жыл бұрын
@@drrocketman7794 Tank destroyer refers to a class of *ground* vehicle designed to specifically fight other tanks and destroy them, they're not meant to and should not be use for any other reason than to kill tanks. The concept was borne in WW2 when countries realize that building a capable tank that could stand up to other tanks was simply too expensive and develop dedicated tank destroyers as a cheaper alternative with higher tactical and strategic mobility so they could ship them out to combat mass enemy armor divisions. You're referring to attack aircrafts which could attack tanks but that is not their only purpose unlike tank destroyers.

Well the russian tank destroyer project might not have been successfull. But you should consider the two German Kanonen Jagdpanzer and the Jaguar Raketen Jagdpanzer. About 1000 were build in total. They were vehicles of about 25-30 tons. As far as I can gather: They were meant for the local defence, so if/when the russian punched a hole in the defence line of Nato, they would attack the armoured personel carriers, fuel truck, etc. The main benefit was that they were relatively cheap low profile and reasonably fast. The basic idea was for the Leopard 1 to race on the Autobahn to "stop the rot" and the local defence to make life as short and unpleasant for the WAPA criminals as possible - they would not go up against the russian main battle tanks as such, but make their supply chain impossible. Die Jagdpanzerne were a sort of stop gab measures on a budget - that was not hopeless - they full-filled that purpose reasonably.

It's a cool looking system at least. A shame that it was basically obsolete the second it actually got into production thanks to being a one trick pony in a world where the very thing it was meant to kill could now just lob missiles out the main guns, while IFVs were just carrying a missile or two as a secondary weapon. Not to mention attack helicopters giving another versatile platform for fire support and tank hunting.
